Nice list. My favorites for 2022:
    1. Tar (hands down the best)
    2. The Northman
    3. Pinocchio (Del Toro's version, not the godawful Disney remake)
    4. Kimi
    5. The Batman (agree that stylistically it's the best Batman film to date)
    6. Enola Holmes 2 (don't laugh, it was far better than the first one)
    7. Emily the Criminal
    8. Glass Onion
    9. X (still haven't seen Pearl but I suspect it would have made my cut, like yours)
    10. Vortex
    11. Prey
    12. Operation Mincemeat
Regarding your comment about Casino: that's one of my favorite Scorsese films. I say that without reservation; I even like it better than Goodfellas, because it's more epic in terms of the characters' rise and fall.

I loved hearing about your favorites this year and some of the films I felt similar towards were Babylon and The Batman. Both stuck with me for the feelings they gave me more so than the cohesiveness of plot or director intent. Their atmosphere and overall production do a lot of the work in pulling me in and holding me there. I have yet to see Vortex and Banshees but plan to soon. My movie of the year still goes to Mad God for the absolutely demented spectacle that it was, but Tár is high on that list as well because I deeply enjoyed the character study. Phenomenal year for film. Let’s hope 2023 is even better!

      @MasterSwordOblivion Рік тому +1

@@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017 Robert as Batman was believable in my opinion. He’s incredibly angry at the world and the criminal element for what they did to his family and he’s detached himself from the world in his crime fighting obsession. He has a palpable rage and over the film he is shown to be social awkward and is slowly humanized by Selena Kyle. Try rewatching it and maybe you’ll be surprised.

Good list, considering the options available. The one that most jumps out as me as missing would be "The Whale". Some reviewers found it to be exploitive or offensive, but that's not what I got at all. Much like my favorite movie of 2022, Banshees of Inisherin, it was simple and deep at the same time. Of course given that it's Aronofsky, you have to know that you're in for some tough emotions - but I made myself ready for that and I was surprised by how good it was.

Just saw Babylon yesterday. I was surprised at how much I loved it. I think it is an incredibly well made movie and yea, it is cold like Casino but how many times have I seen Casino.? A lot! Same thing will happen with Babylon. Also loved Pearl. I still think Fabelmans is the best of the year but obviously haven't seen everything yet. Fall is runner up for me. Another nice surprise.

just watched Tar, and its fantastic. I think it does a way better job of showing egotistical conductors/educators than Whiplash. Much more realistic really shows what those type of directors are like. They're not R Lee Ermy, they're much subtler than that

    • @deepfocuslens
      @deepfocuslens  Рік тому +7

More realistic certainly...but Whiplash is more of a fever dream addiction experience, and not meant to be an authentic depiction in the same way. Less about the periphery...and more about losing yourself to the ecstasy of performing without judgement, which resonantes with me. I see them as serving completely different purposes. Tar more cerebral, Whiplash more visceral. Both very effective in their own ways.

I loved Blonde but still need to see RRR and Top Gun. I tried Glass Onion but I just can't handle the deconstructionism and the naval-gazing. Johnson seems more interested in Twitter than making an entertaining film. It also has the most shameless product placement since Source Code.

Haven't seen most of these, as my attention span has been taken for granted too many times by movie companies (and I do value your suggestions, thank you, and will certainly see a few of these, now). But I'm really glad that you liked Red Rocket so much. Because, personally, although I've only seen it once, I found it to be the greatest movie since Parasite.
I especially liked its originality: how it's essentially a comedy played completely straight. With elements so absurdly comical. And yet the direction and acting and settings lend themselves quite well to a humanistic sense of realism that truly immerses you (without getting too into it, I'd be greatly surprised if the writer isn't familiar with Shakespeare, Balzac, Dostoevsky, or Tennessee Williams). And although, there was one real plot hole, (when he escapes out the window) it doesn't even matter because it leads to the most hilarious part of the whole movie,--when he's jogging dick-flopping-naked-and-afraid to the sound of nsync (forever changing the meaning of that song!)-while lending homage to, and ratcheting up the absurdity of, Steve Martin's iconic dignity-thrashing scene in The Jerk.
And I'm going to have to disagree with you in a couple of ways about this movie. You talk about the sense of melancholy because it's the story of a man's downfall. However, he was already pretty much hitting rock bottom at the beginning of the movie (the pitch of his wildly and ingenuously absurd vacuous ego is what truly lightens things up, as anyone else in that situation would have been utterly and helplessly pitiful); with absolutely no money (he could have just come from jail), while having to constantly swallow the fact of his failed enterprise in front of so many people that he used to know. And I would probably call it melancholy if Mikey's character had enough sense, emotional intelligence, and consequently, self-awareness, to actually be philosophical.
Also, you speak of the sadness of American life. But I honestly feel that there was a deeper human truth there. Because all of our dreams (even Mikey's, which struck me as particularly illiterate and utterly bereft of imagination; as impoverished people generally do not have the luxury of art, and consequently, imagination, and are typically squeezed and cornered by society into a truly low and instinctually brutal state) are somewhat delusional. And quite simply because human beings are only capable of forethought, and not foresight. Anyways, without dreams, we cannot have hope. And without hope, none of us would even get out of bed in the morning.
Jay from RLM found the ending to be seriously depressing. But I found it to be absolutely wonderful. Because Mikey still had hope, to very last. He was still dreaming. He was still believing. And that is so wonderfully human. Also, the ending is only as ambiguous as your own heart is. Do you believe in human beings? Do you believe in love? In the kind of love so irrational that it could accept a naked sweaty liar who has absolutely nothing in the world to his name? Oh, I believe it. And I believe that nine times out of ten, that sort of love would certainly not come from a man.
Anyways, I hope that my tone wasn't too pointed, here (I suppose that I'm a polemicist, and my enthusiasm for art often gets the best of me!). Because I have great respect for you, and that interestingly rare and bright mind or yours that you've cultivated so well. Love your voice, in both senses, and I hope that you continue to speak to us.

Glad to see The Batman on here. The pacing is an arguable debate though I didn’t have an issue and thought the last act was necessary especially batman (bruce) realizing he can be bruce wayne and not just a bat vigilante being the shadows hence his (something more) speech, i did cringe at the “white privileged” line on zoë kravitz’ part. It was the best Batman film in years on a detective standpoint. I can’t recall any other batman live action that truly emphasized on what batman is most known for. We got little of it in the dark knight when he is in hong kong but this was truly a arkham game / batman detective story and thats why its my favorite batman film. Especially getting the matt reeves’ long halloween art styled comicbook and the cup for going at the early screening. Best theatre experience in a long time. That and Top Gun Maverick.

I'll have to check out Pearl, I missed that one. I haven't seen that many 2022 movies as a ot are due in the UK but from what I've seen, I 'll give a top 5 -
    5. Babylon - I agree with you Maggie it is stunning filmmaking but it probably could have done with some editing - great performances, great setpieces but a lot of uncomfortable comparisons with other movies (Pulp Fiction, Singin in The Rain), but the sheer ambition is to be celebrated in a generally unimaginative current cinema environment.
    4. Everything Everwhere All At Once
    3 The Banshees of Inisherin
    2 The Fabelmans
1 AFTERSUN - a simple but stunning debut

What made the last year stand out was a trifecta of unusually-inspired blockbusters (tempting to take as signifying of the recovery of cinema as a viable industry post-covid) which were Everything Everywhere etc., the Northman, and the crowning jewel which was Top Gun: Maverick (I didn't catch the Batman). Other than that, the only film I saw that spoke to me was Aftersun. Decision to Leave, the Banshees of Inisherin, Mad God - they didn't do much for me. Corsage was interesting. Tar and Babylon only come out here this year. I just saw the new Avatar which was good in the ways it could have been good I guess, enjoyable. Ones I missed that I think I might have liked to see were the Wonder and RRR.

Several of these films are on my watchlist (and I own several others). I’m surprised you didn’t enjoy The Menu (or at least, not enough to have it on your best of list). I thought the story was very unconventional and brilliant performances by all of the cast (one of two great Anya Taylor-Joy performances this year, the other being in The Northman).

I think a big part of Pearl's appeal is that it is a good and effective prequel to X. Once you've seen it once, that backstory has been filed. Might be the reason for diminishing returns on further watches.

I will check out RRR and Red Rocket for sure. The Batman is easily my favorite Batman movie ever made. I've never enjoyed Christopher Nolan's hero complex. His protagonists' always sacrifice themselves in the most selfless ways. Batman, for me, should be an antihero, someone who does good despite their selfish intentions.
I did't like either La La Land or Whiplash. Up until Babylon, Chazelle's characters lacked inner conflict. I don't mind cliched characters as long as they have opposing facets wrenching them apart. This gives them depth, a place for the audience to occupy and imagine beyond the frame. In Babylon, Chazelle changed how he wrote characters. I didn't know he had it in him. Very cool.
Favorites you didn't mention: Blonde, Men and Everything, Everywhere, All at Once. I am not as cynical in regards to today's current films. I believe there are many talented filmmakers making movies. I am cynical towards the audience's increasing disinterest in thought provoking material. What's most different about today versus the 70's, in my mind, is the audiences' receptivity towards stories that challenge them. Taxi Driver was a hit when it came out... Wow!

Out of the 7 or so movies I saw in 2022, Tár was probably my least favorite. None of its major plot points hit hard enough and it wasnt very musical. The Menu was the most enjoyable for me.
