- Marshall Studio Vintage 20 (SV20H) - Playing It LOUD
This is the second review I'm doing of the Marshall Studio Vintage. In this I just play it loud. I didn't really do that in the first one, and I received some warranted criticism from a couple of people on that. So I thought I'd make it all better by playing the amp on full. I also play it with slightly less volume so you can hear the difference in tone. I also play it with a Strat, and an Ibanez Universe so that you can hear how it reacts to different pickups.
Here it is, hope you enjoy it.

Well done and thanks for sharing brother! Great tones and demonstration!
Thanks man!
Great demo of this classic 20 watter, 'Studio 20 Marshall'. Keep up the good work Elmo. Yo. G.
Thanks!
Great, now that's some Marshall sound! HBs for me all the way! Keep it coming, Elmo.
Cheers!
Great review!!!!! I love Marshall amps, I used to have a vintage modern (wish I never sold it) and now I have a jvm 210h which I love lol but I want this vintage studio for some good cleans and some 80s metal
Cheers :)
Great and informative video again! Thanks! And will keep my dsl20hr to play stereo when I have this great mini plexi🤘🏼 I’m a total sucker for the malmsteen tone😂
Thanks! :)
i've only had limited experience with marshall due to there large price tag. i've used JCM800's in the studio and a Jubilee both were amazing. i prefer a slightly more scooped tone so i use an old Jackson JG-2 50 watt with match 4X12 with greenbacks for live set up, i also use a Genz-Benz el diablo 100 all tube combo amp for a more modern high gain sound.
Cool :)
Great stuff, Elmo. I am leaning towards Studio Classic, but will probably still keep DSL20HR because it does some high gain things really, really well for the price.
I got the dsl20 combo i use low output pickups so for high gain the amp will take me almost there but not quite so i keep the gain half way and use a boss sd1 level and drive at 2o clock adds lots of gain and tightens up the low end
Cool bananas :)
Just bought this amp with the SV212 Cab. Changed my tone life forever. I wake up in the middle of the night just to hear it. As for 'only sounds good cranked' I think that's just bullshit hearsay people like to repeat. I have a passive volume attenuator in the fx loop, then I push the preamp with a super clean boost eq. At moderate home volumes I can get the best OD tones I've ever heard in my life. In fact I find that method to produce more pleasing tones than when the amp is dimed. For pedals: jumper the channels and put the bright channel just under 9:00 and the normal at 12:00. Prepare for God Tone.
Cool bananas :)
Demoed one today at a store and found these same Loudness settings when jumpered as well when I was asked to turn it down. I didn’t use any pedals and it sounded amazing, could easily see the potential at decent volumes with a good drive pedal. The experience has me at about 85% ready to take the plunge lol
i know im asking the wrong place but does any of you know of a way to get back into an Instagram account..?
I somehow lost the account password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me.
@Zayd Layton instablaster ;)
@Abram Rowan thanks so much for your reply. I found the site through google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
i am still testin and from day to day i realize the magic ....of this amp.....thanx for your tipps
Cheers!
Hell yeah, that's the way it's done.
Thanks!
very nice review. i will get one =) sweet Ibanez RG
Cheers :)
You can use a volume control or a pedal with volume control in the EFFECTS LOOP for lower volumes.
Err...? Didn't I say that?
Those of us old enough to remember pre-noise regulation gigs with fully cranked 100 watt Marshalls know all about pick up squeal along with multiple other noises including large farts as the valves got hot ! That we survived with any kind of functioning hearing is a miracle. I really like this amp and that is a problem. May have to leave the wife so I can have one :-) .
Haha :D
glad I don't have wife hehe
@Andrei JamesI think it's more about the volume than price... even at 20 watts a non master volume amp might drive your Mrs. up the wall ;)
wow! sounds good Elmo...im playing this head thru my full stack of 1960HW cabs thats 8 12s.....I cant turn the volume past 12 o clock!
I have a strat with YJM pickups, and it squeals if I’m too close to this amp at full volume. My Les Paul will do the same. The real fun of the amp happened for me when I plugged my Charvel tuned down to D and it the front end with a Tumness OD. It was instantly that chewy Mötley Crüe Dr. Feelgood tone.
Do you ever jumper between channels? Cool video! Just bought the combo version myself. Cheers!
No, I prefer just the one channel.
Thank you Elmo (this guy) I sold all my plexi-like pedals today. I’ve owned the Marshall SV20H for a few months now, it is the sound in my head, glorious and wonderful. Like you, I find the Marshall Plexi to be the best fit for me overdriven slightly or distorted. I’m a new fan of your channel because you are humble, talented and honest. Thank you for all you do.
And thank you for the kind words :)
Thanks for a great review. Can I ask what speakers are in your cab. I guess you have answered my question - is it loud enough to gig with?!
Celestion Greenbacks. And I'd say it's loud enough.
Elmo, I absolutely love your channel. I have a hard time deciding between the 1987x and the vintage modern. Thank you for all the awesome material. Nothing beats Marshall. I'm a little biased though.
Nick Younger 1987x vintage moderen is no match for a plexi. I had the 2266 and it might be rated at 50 watts but only manage sub 30 watts clean. My 76’ slp with two tubes pulled blew it out of the water.
I'd definitely go for the 1987x. It's much better than the Vintage Modern imo. Oh, and thanks :)
such a wild sound
Hey Elmo, have you tried much of the Friedman stuff? I bought a Dirty Shirley mini rig recently second-hand and I am quite impressed how it does the early Plexi stuff ;)
No I haven't. I have been thinking of getting something by them to try at some point. Money is an issue of course...
@@MrPolevaulter they are definitely expensive - I got lucky with this one!
Gabriel Nacu Im planning on getting that Friedman
@@user-nb3vs2mc4e i highly reccommend it man. The Dirty Shirley is fantastic!
tell me, if you din't need the extra power, only the tones, would you go for the sv20h?
Not sure. So little difference in terms of sound. I'd probably have two of each if money was no issue :D
I have also one sv20h and it cannot handle a boost pedal with too much gain. It starts an uncontrollable squeal. I think its beacause of the low wattage because it does not happen with the jcm800. For ex. with fender malm pedal I can use, with full volume, the gain Max at 12 o clock. Almost the same with sd1 and Timmy. Do you remember how was the boost pedal settings in this vídeo? But the tone of the mini plexi is amazing.
I had output and gain on max.
How is this amp at low volume compared to the mini Silver Jubilee?
I prefer this one. It's way more of that classic Marshall thing.
Im a new subscriber! Hope you add a Les Paul to your arsenal! Plexi’s with a Les Paul just make sense :P Definitely dig the strat YJM tones as well :)
Thanks! I'm more of a Strat guy though :)
@@MrPolevaulter ESP Eclipse is better than a Les Paul
Hey This Guy, nice demo
Haha :D Thanks!
Hi mate, thanks for the video. Do you think this little amp is capable of doing some jtm45 tones?
I've never tried a JTM so not sure.
Hi Mr.
Which OD Pedal did you use? Great Demo!
Fender Yngwie Overdrive. Thanks!
Hey man, love your strat, what are the EQ settings you use on this amp (while using strat)? Also, noticed the cord on the front of the amp hanging down, you should tuck your cord behind the amp and above it, to take all the weight off the cord at the input jack of the amp, that way you don't wear the input jack out on the amp. And it just looks more professional that way and is out of the way on stage.
Rock on
Cheers! I do that live. But thanks for the tip. The EQ is bass 8 , mid 8, treble 6, presence 4.
@@MrPolevaulter Interesting thanks for the info. Keep making videos
Thoughts on the new Studio Classic for the Yngwie sound? I know he's a balls-out-cranked plexi guy, and the studio vintage is perhaps the more logical choice, but wondered if anyone could comment on the Classic.
Haven't tried it, so not sure.
@@MrPolevaulter 8 months later I can answer my own question, having owned and extensively played both. The studio classic is great, but as expected, the studio vintage does the Malmsteen thing better. I kept the studio vintage. Marshall has hit a home run with both amps though IMO.
@@dansmith709 They certainly have.
How many db do you have to reach to get to that great distorted tone?
Dunno.
Hi Elmo.....well, first of all you have very very nice hands...hehe!! Great job! Do you think that this amp is good for Led Zeppelin sound? I frankly believe yes, but I'd like to have your opinion. Many thanks and compliments again for your job.....and for your hands af course!!
Haha :D Thanks Monica! I think it would be great for that.
Elmo, keep doing what you're doing!
Thanks! Will do :)

You made me boght this amp ahah, do you think that volume pedal in the loop would bring down some dB?
Thanks and cheers
It sure will.
@@MrPolevaulter power attenuator like Boss Waza tube expander is a must plus the IR loader and on board FX are great.
@@GuitarsAndSynths I've been thinking of one, although a 15 euro volume pot in the loop also does quite a good job live. In the studio you can just play it full blast :D
I own one and use a volume box through the pre amp, similar effect to a pre amp.or attenuator. The way the taper is om on the hi/low volumes you really need something since you don't get great break without.
Great amp. I have a Jcm800 100w. I didn't understand clearly what have you said about running it at full volume: is it favorable or not? Maybe not since it starts to being harsh. What's your experience?
When I record I always run the Plexi at full blast. I like it that way.
@@MrPolevaulter got it... Do you use an attenuator?
@@lovecraftmusic8717 No. ua-cam.com/video/0LR0haLKyng/v-deo.html
I didn’t realize one could blast an amp into a mic without blowing out the mic. I always thought even with using a dB switch it would just be too loud to blast with the mic right up to the cone. I haven’t tried myself .
@@heythere6983 good point... Probably the usual dynamic mic like an sm57 or a e906 are more robust than what we think.
Sorry but I didnt understand an important point.
What was in the loop for VolumeControl?
A volume pot.
Nice fin!
Cheers!
Just subscribed to your channel.
Your channel is great because you are not part of a company who sells or a paid endorsement where everything they say is like fairies and butterflies.
Can you also include blues licks especially in demoing an amp? Thanks a lot
Cheers :) I do that occasionally. Seems to depend on the mood I'm in :D
God, imagine if that was 100 watts and not 20.... Holy shit, nothing beats that sound.
Sounds pretty good too me, but if I'm not going to spring for a real plexi I'll just stick with my or15 till I could afford or need one.
Cool.
Vs the origin you just have more tonal options. The quality totally is very much on par. The plexiglass let's you pack in the range of dsl/jcm/bluesbreaker tones but also has a wide array of clean feels that are distinctly 50's. The jazzy tones have that very natural warmth and roundness, but the raw sense of articulation, similar to the origin series.
Your videos are great. Consider the idea of buying a decibel meter. That would greatly improve this kind of video, since "loud" can be a very vague word.
It is very vague. And I just bought one last week.
@@MrPolevaulter , That's great news!
@TheButcher6969 No idea :D
Hi Elmo, i have the squeel as well when I use the malmsteen overdrive on my Studio Vintage with fury seymour duncans. How have you solved this issue? My tubes are fine, do I have to lower my pickups maybe? Hope you have an answer ;-) Greetings from the Netherlands
it is microphonic squeel; I just have to take some distance from the cabinet and the squeel is gone; so it is fixed! 🤣🤣
Yeah, distance is the key.
I tried to set the presence lower to zero and the microphonic issues disappear
Thats what youre gonna get with single coils. Its just something we have to deal with if we want that tone. Some distance to the amp and if hum is annoying maybe sone noise gate. :)
I am not anymore sure about presence control.. i think yes.. it’s the distance the key . I use ns2 boss at max level threshold. And have fury pickups and di marzio hs3/4
The commercial before this demo started was for hearing loss..what?
Sounds about right :D
@@MrPolevaulter LOL!
The amp sounds great, but I already have a 65 Amps Empire, a Dr Z Remedy for Plexi Style Amps.
Well then dont buy the Marshall!
Sure does.
Or do buy the Marshall anyway :D
intro is laoud as hell :D
Haha :D Sorry.
is that a RORY GALLAGER start?
No. Custom mahogany.
I prefer my Blackstar to this. This is more 'boomy' than the Code demo you did. Perhaps it's the recording? But a good objective post nonetheless. Keep em coming.
Cheers Chris!
like most amps, it needs an EQ pedal in the FX to clean it up. An EQ pedal is best investment for any amp. Really lets you shape tones and refine sound. Even a 5k Bogner or Friedman amp benefit from an EQ pedal.
Must have
Very good amp indeed :)
My Strat with an aluminum pickguard will squeal at high gain and high volumes.
Yeah.
What delay settings do you use
Oh man I’ll see the light sounded so good!!! What pedals did you use?
Thanks Nikita!
Strymon Timeline, with the analog setting. The overdrive is a Fender Yngwie Malmsteen.
@@MrPolevaulter my favorite delay pedal! That or the new Strymon Volante
One upgrade that Marshall could do to the Studio Vintage could be to build in a master volume. Imagine that, jump the channels, dial in your bright/dark tones and then use the master volume to dial in your level.
Or buy a 15 euro volume pot and put in the loop :)
Get an eq pedal and crank it
Is this amp divorce loud?
Probably.
@Caleb LoBue :D
I am debating either getting one of these, a brunetti pleximan, or something cheap like a bugera 1960 with a Power Station.
A 1959 or 1987 is out of the question, as for that kind of money I could get a Larry grohmann.
Thanks for the bitchin demo!
I recently got a pleximan, it's a great amp but quite bright to my ears. I do need a better cab as running it with a 4x12 with seventy eighties. Zilla cab to come soon. I'm considering studio vintage as back up / alternative if it's loud enough which it seems to be.
Thanks!
@Stuart white
Your speakers are the issue, I am almost 100% positive. Plexis are supposed to be super bright in the first place, but some of that is rolled off by the speakers most commonly used like greenbacks and v30s that have more of a midrange hump.
I would either replace your speakers or the entire cabinet before replacing the pleximan - I would actually say its on the subdued side as far as plexi brightness goes. You should hear an original late 60s lead spec!
@@danieltravis5082
Thanks for the advice. About to pull the trigger on a zilla fat boy just deciding on speakers. Maybe H75 creambacks or maybe wait till the new Ruby's are available, but a bit of an unknown for the time being. Definitely keeping the Brunetti though.
@Stuart white
Creambacks would be a fantastic choice!
Also you should check out scumback speakers too, that dude does awesome pre broken in custom stuff that works fantastic in a plexi type amp!
It sounds ok to me, but still sounds harsh or spikey in certain frequencies to me via my AKGin ears compared to your UK made 50 watt. Just not as creamy or smooth. Could be my built in bias though for Western made goods I'm old (57) and sruck in my ways. 😛 But, still cat nip to the ladies. 😛
Hoosier Daddy the studio vintage is made in 🇬🇧
@@kladenf03v I thought he said in another vid it was made somewhere else. Cool.. Thanks for the correction.👍✌👍
Yeah, it's made in the UK.
That amp sounds just right :)
Sure does :)
@@MrPolevaulter it actually sounds better to me than the mini Silver Jubilee
@@GuitarsAndSynths Yep.
Great demo Elmo! LOVE your playing .....in your opinion can you really gig this sv20? It seems like a less expensive alternative to the 1987x ?
both guitars need treble from the amp, sounding better at,...8.55 or so...
You have some very cool guitars! I'm trying to convince myself I don't need this amp. Your not helping! :)
Haha :D Sorry.
Djent-Face Alarm 10:26 !
That face also works perfectly on Krakatau :)
:D
amp is muddy from here..clean it up some..your the man an can do anything except of course no human on earth can play like blackmore an he is 76 now,an goin down, but a few years ago,no one could correctly play his stuff, its a special gift.............
I had a play through one of these amps the other day they sound pretty good, your demo sounds like it has affects (delay) go through the channel which may affect the sound maybe you can try doing a demo with a backing track with the guitar lead played straight into the amp, to get an idea rather than just playing notes everywhere and out of tune.....
Maybe you can try doing your own channel rather than just criticizing people for doing what they like.....
and i don't agree with you. My 20 W origin takes pedals magnificently and at loud volumes
Cool bananas!
Hello that guy! Some want you to play loud... but it's not their ears they are hurting.
:D
Playing loud is a therapy...
Only those who were around speakers received the magic power.
:)))
Too much echo and stuff going on. The amp isn't dimed. I want to know how the amp sounds for normal classic rock with no effects and classic rock type riffs, chords etc
Emo the yngwie stuff gets real real real boring immediately, would love to hear how the amp does singing sustain with finger vibrato. The malmsteen stuff is grim , can you mix up your licks so as to appeal to a wider listening audience please.
I occasionally do. Sometimes I play nothing fast. Personally I think that if an amp works for the faster stuff, then it will work for the other stuff.
Scamp you comment is boring.
how come your guitars all sound like shit???
All my guitars? You've heard them all? Must be me then. Nice channel you have btw.
can you do anything that aint frickin shred for the love of god, be versatile, your such a good cool, warm hearted guy, play her strut, thats bob seger, or ....misssisippi queen, thats ...mountain..
Why would you request Bob Seger? Mr Karjalainen plays music.
very technically proficient but david gilmour puts more feeling in one note than shredders that play a million notes.
And you wanted to share this opinion because...? :D
Like this? ua-cam.com/video/oAxEI3qwxJU/v-deo.html
So, no response to my video? Just wanted to say David Gilmour bla bla...? Not going to give a guy a chance? Classy job Mr. Spada.
