"Edo" is the old name for Tokyo. In Japan's history, the Edo Period lasted from 1603 to 1868. Dishes using seafood caught from Edo Bay (Tokyo Bay) or the Edo river, came to be called Edomae cuisine. Subsequently, Edomae style Sushi was developed to specifically highlight the ingredients found in the Edo area. Ingredients found in other areas are not typically used in the Edomae style.
