This was super fascinating. Eugene is my favorite guitarist and my number one influence on how I play ANY instrument. This is the first I learned of Derek Bailey but having him in there with Jimi, Chuck and Charlie just made Eugene make a whole lot more sense to me.

I know of Derek Bailey from his work with David Sylvian, and have an album that was released on Sylvian's Samadhi Sound label. Not surprised Chadbourne likes him.

I must get Eugene's Roll Over Berlusconi. He probably must've named after from Chuck Berry's song.

In Chuck's case, I wonder if he just detuned a half step in order to better match his vocal range (I have buddies who do it today), or to extend the life of his strings by reduction of tension. Not accusing; just supposing.
Apropos to the video, I'd like to know what Eugene thinks of Ralph Towner.

So useful a lecture. Thank you, Doctor Chadbourne. Happily liked and shared (got a lot of musically themed performer friends . . . plus myself).
I know about the Rockers' list of forbidden keys, too. Eb, Ab, and Bb are strong with the anti-rock Force. Is this why saxophone went extinct in pop bands? I suspect so.
As far as jazz goes . . . Disclaimer: personal whimsy ahead!
Jazz is not a genre of music; instead, it lies in one's APPROACH to it. Once you've played a tune often enough to become saturated with it, one of two things happens. You become a low quality Juke Box, or you decide to "fuck" with it until it's (until the song is, in other words) interesting again.
Working with many acts, all performing the same general songs (Swing, especially, is rife with "standards"), often in the same keys (referred to as "Horn Bias"-and, yes, it's a thing), a musician can become interested in what classical composers refer to as "variations on a theme", that theme being the melody of the piece at hand. When it is good, it is very, very, good*, and when it is bad, it is horrid**.
