    I recently learned something incredibly interesting about Greg Maddux and how he actually signaled to Eddie Perez what pitch he wanted to throw. Perez has backed this story up, too. When Perez would give signs in his crouch, it was just in case someone was trying to steal signs. The position in which Maddux’s glove was when he caught the throw back from Eddie between pitches signaled what pitch he wanted to throw next. Then, Perez would touch a different piece of his equipment until Maddux stopped staring directly in and that would let Perez know where to set up for the location. For example, if Maddux caught the throw back up by his ear, it would signal a slider(for example). Then Perez would start by touching his mask, then his chest protector. If Maddux broke eye contact with Eddie after he touched his chest protector, it meant he wanted the pitch down and in(for example). Then Perez would throw down a couple of signs which Maddux would either nod approval at or shake him off, just to screw with the hitter as well as anyone who might’ve been trying to pull an Astros. If the hitter looked like he was expecting the fastball after Perez put down one finger and Doggy nodded “yes”, and looked foolish because he got the change or the slider, that’d let them know that someone was trying to steal signs so that a reliever and whomever happened to be the C later in the game could cycle the pitches called by the C with an indicator or just reverse the order of which fingers meant what. That blew my mind on all kinds of levels! He and Perez would actually have every situation mapped out the night before Maddux started as to when he wanted to throw which hitter which pitch. That’s why Perez was Maddux’s “personal catcher” for 90% of the starts when they were teammates. Damon Berryhill was in Doggy’s first season in ATL(1993) because they had been teammates in CHI for several seasons. Then, Charlie O’Brien was in 1995 and Perez made the club out of Spring Training in 1996. It also gave Javier Lopez much needed days off during those stupidly hot summers in Atlanta and on the road in Philly at The Vet or in St. Louis or Miami.

      Actually Greg did not like Javy as a catcher. Javy was a good hitter but he was one of the worst catchers in the league. So thats why Eddie was his man. Eddie was a great catcher. The same thing with Kershaw. Barnesy is his Eddie Perez.Austin Barnes is a very good game caller. Will Smith is a good hitter but he is a reliability behind the plate. In fact he is the WORST catcher in the league if you take away his hitting. The truly great pitchers all have “their man” behind the plate.

    I went to the infamous 5/1/04 game where the Giants played the Marlins at (what the park was called back then) SBC Park. I was there with my 7-year-old son and as we watched the game (Giants won 6-3) and in which Bonds was intentionally walked 4 times in one game, setting a major league record. Pavano walked him twice intentionally and Frank Gracesqui walked him once and Armando Benitez also IBB'd Bonds. It was bottom of the 8th inning when I saw the Marlin's catcher Ramon Castro hold up his left hand displaying 4 fingers with Bonds at the plate...(the entire stadium was on its feet) I leaned into my son and said to him, "My son, you are witnessing history right now." My boy wearing his Giants cap that was a little too big for him smiled and nodded as he understood that no player in major league history had EVER been walked intentionally 4 times in one game. Bonds was a god on the diamond surrounded by mere mortals.

      Roids did EVERYTHING to give him HITS that wouldn't have been hits. Balls made it through the infield that would have been stopped, or made it to the wall that outfielders would have stopped, or OVER the wall that would have been caught. Roids increased his hits, his batting average, his slugging percentage, his on base percentage, his RBIs. Roids didn't help him MAKE contact, but they DID improve what the ball did when he DID make contact. And in an era of salary caps, he earned more money because of roids, thereby depriving otherwise worthy teammates of their deserved increases. During his time in San Francisco, had he hit HRs at the pace he did in Pittsburgh, he would have ended his career with about 537 HRs, a full 200+ fewer than he actually did. POSSIBLY! He also would not have secured as many MVP awards without roids, another accomplishment he deprived of other deserving players, like Pujols, etc. He is a lying, cheating bastard, who damaged the integrity of the game - he should NEVER be in the HOF.

He also did it during the dead ball era. One thing is if you don't want the majority of people to think you're a cheater, don't take anything that enhances your performance. His career will always be tarnished, and does not deserve to be in the hall of fame. It sends a bad message. He cheated. Roger Clemens, Jose Canseco, Sosa... none of them don't deserve to be in it.

    I can't give Bonds the title of scariest hitter, partly because - although he was on a HOF clip before juicing - he was never considered scary on that level before the PEDs. It's like me standing in the ring with Tyson in his prime and saying I'm the more scary fighter because I've got a gun.
    Equally important is the fact that Bonds' HR tear coincided with officiating changes. The umpires could no longer give pitchers the outside of the black (or beyond).
    Squeezing pitchers basically signaled the end of the Braves' rotation's dominance, and certainly helped guys who basically wore suits of armor and more or less crowded the plate fairly regularly.

  • @larryhowser1404
    @larryhowser1404 2 роки тому +1

    Eight home runs in 157 plate appearances facing Bonds is actually quite good - fewer than 32 home runs per 600 PA. Probably not many pitchers did that well against Bonds.

    I have noticed that when ball players retire, a lot get completely out of shape and put on 50-60 lbs. When a football player retires, they lose 50-60 lbs and are a spokesperson for Jenny Craig. I would think it would be the other way around given the physical differences between the two sports.

      Bullshit. Greatest home run hitter ever?? Sorry. You don’t know much baseball history! 😂 Babe Ruth was the greatest hitter of all time. He hit HRs in parks that had 490ft to CF and in an era where they sometimes used only 1 baseball per game and that baseball was so brown and black and scuffed all over it cost a man his life!!... And even though in 1920 “wet balls” or spitballs or doctored balls were banned there was no policing and even most teams were still allowed to keep using doctored balls for another whole year allowed by MLB. The ball was made of rubber and not cork. Foul balls did not count as strikes. And the year he set the single season HR record he hit more HRs than 7 major league teams. And and he hit 714 HRs whilst having 3 very bad years where by todays standard he would be suspended for a whole season. Look youre allowed to have an opinion of course no problem but to say Barry Bonds is the greatest HR hitter ever is like saying The 2017 Astros were the greatest baseball team ever. Its baseball blasphemy! Sorry but no effing way in hell dude!😂

    Funny thing is he was intentionally walked with the bases loaded before he started the steroids lol. He gained 30+lbs in the 98'-99' offseason after remaining steady for many years(his power and already ridiculous hitting prowess took a huge spike once he got healthy in that run too). That's how good he was in his prime. In 1992 and 1993, the league already had a lot of guys juicing it up - and he still managed to tower above them all with OPS+s over 200 both seasons.
    I loved watching him hit on the juice. It was absurd, like a cheat code in a video game. But retrospectively, he was a first-ballot hall of famer before he touched the drugs, and with the way he already took care of himself - he could've ended up with 600+ home runs anyways and on that Mount Rushmore. Despite his surly attitude, he could've been baseball's unlikely hero of the steroid era, the arrogant prick who refused to take the drugs because he didn't need them to be better than anyone else in the game.

      He had reconstructive shoulder surgery in 1998 and he lifted a lot of weights to strengthen his shoulder. He also changed his swing adding more of an uppercut. In 2000, the Giants moved into Pacbell Park, which had a short left porch so Bonds' tailored his swing to take advantage of that. NOBODY mentioned steroids until Bonds' had his breakout year of 2000. I was here those years and can tell you that 2001 was made inevitable because of the backlash Bonds' faced in the 2000 NLDS when he made 17 straight outs on the same high tight pitch kind of like the Dodgers in the last WS. Difference was Bonds' worked like a devil to change his stance and cheat up to catch up to that high tight itch. In the first half of 2000, Managers refused to believe it and kept throwing that same pick to him and he kept hammering it. By the time they figured out the new reality, he had 50 homers (he had 49 in 2000). Then 9/11 happened and baseball was the distraction for the public so the public embraced Bonds' and the historic chase. It was not until 2002 that the real hate started.
