Control, finesse, and taste: these are the words that describe this solo by Jost Nickel. For anyone looking for tips and ideas for constructing an engaging solo - take notes!
Jost Plays:
Sonor Drums
Meinl Cymbals
Aquarian Drumheads
Vic Firth Sticks
I LOVE Jost solos. They're typically groove centric, interesting, and tasteful as F#*k. Dude never wastes a note.
I think the next step in the drumeo experience is to get someone to transcribe these kickass solos to be analysed and studied.
The level of precision is plain out of this world.
Benny Greb, Anika Nilles, Jost Nickel....all German drummers, crazy.
Lukas T Agreed! Let's not forget about Marco Minneman and Jojo Mayer!
Lukas T Jost was Anika's teacher
:-)
Jojo Mayer is Swiss, though - huge difference 🙃
Oh, you're right! My bad
You forgot Marco Minneman. One of the greatest, in my opinion. :)
Dude is like a drum magician
Nickel's solos are incrediby engaging. BRILLIANT.
His drumming is so relaxing :)
Well that did't feel like 7 minutes, this was an absolute beast of a drum solo.
One of favorites to watch currently 🥁
Jost and Benny Greb strike me so similar in styles. Spy vs. Spy. Might give the edge to Jost after this solo. 👏
1:47 - Boss move right there.
Love it! The dynamics.. and the sound.. damn this kit sounds soo good. As they always do. :) Great job who ever does the sound Drumeo!
What a creative and groovy solo. Those dynamics are just beautiful and those transitions between relaxed groove, swing and chops: unique. Phenomenal drummer.
Incredible drum solo man! Never gets boring like so many others out there. And you gotta love the shoes dude!
More people need the hear this. Brilliant! 🙏🏻🤩
Those are some nice sounding drums. And dope shoes.
Brilliant playing and recording! Outstanding composure and control! Jost is definitely one of the more intellectual minded drummers out there.
so much finesse.... the 'fla' are so sweet to my hears!
Good Looord! Best drum solo so far.
This just made my day
what an amazing drummer
Solid drum solo, awesome work Jost! :)
Absolutely a must for greatest drum solo of all time right here. I'm gonna make a list one day and this is the first one.

holy shit, can't believe I haven't heard of this guy before. so damn interesting
What was the splash to his right?
super top
That Sonor kit............🤤
What is that lick at 0:54? It's the same as what Larnell plays in the start to What About Me.
Hi. It is based on the swiss triplet. So the original is lR* R L. (the letter with * is the accent, the small letter the flam) In the variation the middle R gets doubled, and the last L gets an accent, so: lR* RRL*. Then you can replace the hands on the first stroke, this would be the version jost played, so rL* RRL*. Notice that he plays a delayed flam so the flam is doubled with the bass and the accent is behind it. I hope you can understand my explanation, i forgot the name of the variation. But there is on for it. He playes it as a polyrhythm so 3 against 4.
its called blushda :D here is it pbs.twimg.com/media/CZ6ZX9VXEAAMjRG.jpg:large just add the accent
Gooood
Stupid comparison but this way more entertaining than Mangini’s solos
What double bass pedal is that? It looks smooth.
Henkjan Steringa some type of sonor I'm pretty sure. Not certain of the model though
Alex Miehl giant step
+Henkjan Steringa It´s a Sonor DP 672; quite expensive, but it easily hold its own against top models from DW or Tama. From what I remember it has a lighter but similar feel to the DW 9002. I think Benny Greb uses them too.
sonor double pedal, i have this and works fine!
I thought it might be the Sonor DP 472, but not sure, I have the left-handed version...
Disko No.1!
Did he wear any ear plugs when playing this? Just curious
Hi!
Does anyone know what he is doing between 3:18 (ua-cam.com/video/2IhxV8u5aiI/v-deo.html) to 3:22 ???
+jostnickel Maybe you can explain it? or link a video?
I prefer drum solos like this where they play around with a groove and build a solo on it. I think it makes for a better and more melodic solo.
i like that pair of Nike!!!
SQ 2 OR Prolite ?
GOAT
Can anyone tell me what cymbals he used in this small stack to his left?
That's the Meinl Generation X 8"/10" Electro stack.
Thanks!
6:02 forced many drummers into early retirement.
very tasty!!!!
It's weird, i feel like I've already heard this exact same solo 🤔
His solos might often sound like that...
It does sound amazing but I was wondering if your team at drumeo can bring an instructor to teach some body movement while drumming. Cause when I drum I wanna look like Ronnie from the Killers, or Gregory from Remy Zero or even Josh from 21 pilots. All of them have fantastic body movement when drumming. I look like stone gargoyle with my body movement lol.
sindx please don't try to emulate that 21 pilots overacting cringe king
You don't need a lesson for that, you just need feel. Feel is a big part of drumming, or just music in general. Enjoy what you're playing and that movement will come naturally. Or to get started with movement, just make sure your left foot is always keeping time.
Michael Schack has the videos you are looking for.
I half expected a chubby Josh Peck playing the drums.
красава
This is Anika's teacher.
bring Matt Halpern!
Josh Nichols
Un capo... me gustaría saber por que hubo personas que pusieron el pulgar para abajo!
Walter Alejandro Cabana. Porque no saben la calidad.
junglebrov vos debes ser superior a lo que estamos viendo entonces...
It’s cliche how all the German drummers are sponsored by Meinl
LISTEN TO BUDDY RICH THE SOLOS HQ. THE SOLOS ARE SICK AND OTHER WORLDLY
What are thhoossee!!
Those Js tho
And he always plays without a click track
Amazing grooove solo
Ok :)
This.
Jost is definitely one of my favorite drummers ^^ maybe because he's from Hamburg too :P
very confortable!!
Yaaaaaaawn
least hes not a sour kraut. lol
Drumeo guests always look so baked...but then, I don't know if you could play like that if you were stoned. Or maybe you can ONLY play like that if you're stoned.
Common Octopus Music groove and soul, not drugs
Vilgoth Lalc I'm pretty sure he's talking about weed, not drugs.
JBic420 isnt weed a drug? lol
Seems more like a jetlag :D
Vilgoth Lalc it's a plant :)
1st
KUSHAL FOR DRUM nope. you were beaten within a 2 min margin
first
it's soooooooo repetitive. come on Sure he can play well
Sometimes drum solos just sound like offbeat noise...
I used to thnk so too but they do require a solid understanding of rhythm to enjoy.
Chris Thompson Yes, but not this one...
