We were shocked and saddened to hear the news of John Blackwell’s passing. John holds a special place in our hearts at Drumeo. He was one of the first special guests to come give a lesson and truly believed in our message of sharing the love of drumming and music.
This is John’s drum solo from that session. An incredible display of technique, musicianship, and discipline. He will be missed.

This isn’t a drum solo. It’s a symphony. Simply amazing.
Even as a drummer who mainly played to Technical Death Metal and Deathcore, John Blackwell was always a large inspiration to me after seeing him on the artists page on drummerworld back in 2006, his use of limb independance is fantastic, outside of this video as well I loved his groove, he knew most importantly how to play for the song as first priority, rest in peace you legend.
I had no idea John had passed away! So sad, he was moving the instrument on and was becoming a true great!!
He’s from my hometown. It was very sad. But he had a full life and lived more than most could ever dream of. Love that guy. ❤️
Interviewer: So John, are you right or left handed?
JB: Yes.
This guy was a legend , a legend we can't forget . We will never forget Mr. Blackwell for he will remain in our hearts forever .

How could anyone dislike a tribute to someone who's passed away? He mentored a few of my friends and I got to know him a little, it's crazy to think he's gone

Words can’t describe his technique, ability, feel, groove, talent and the list goes on for how good John was on the drum. He was so chill and down to earth as well. RIP man you are forever missed.
This guy is unreal. Just amazed by his dexterity, control and rythmn. Insane! Could watch him all day. Unbelievable chops and the tastiest licks ever!

I first saw John playing in the 90's with Cameo on the Sinbad summer concert series. His stick twirling was insane and it caught my eye not to mention the super deep pocket. Was in shock to hear the news of his passing. Still can't believe he's gone. He will definitely be missed!

I got your 1st dvd when it came out. . after I saw you with Prince in 2000 in Dallas and that remains to this day my fav concert ever. Your style and showmanship was second to none. Ive never seen anything like that in drumming. Pure groove, power, pocket and lotsa surprises... You did things in a way that were your own. You will always be one of the greatest of musicians, not just drummers. . Im still so sad you're not here, along with that other great and rare legend....Every 4th of July, I will remember one more great American hero.

In 2002 I met John at the very front of the stage after Princes performance @Manchester Apollo, he was very young and very sound, he shook our hands and thanked us all for coming! Both John and Prince were outstanding together and he was my favourite Prince drummer along with Michael B (Michal Bland) the fact these 2 genius are no longer with us is a loss to us all who love music. ❤ 🎵 🥁

WHAT?! Aww man! John Blackwell was one of my first "favorite" drummers. This makes me sad.
I loved John very much! Spent quite a bit of time studying his ferocious - finesse style. Very unique and full of funk! He made a lot of fabulous noise on the kit but on the contrary was such a peaceful and gracious individual! Thanks for the inspiration John! Such a shame he had to leave us so soon, but I'm sure he's smiling up above in God's kingdom. Thoughts and prayers are with his family.
John will be missed! He is now playing for Jesus up above!
My favorite JB moments were his drumming on Prince's album The Rainbow Children and his 2004 Musicology tour

As I've watched him with his left hand lead, it sorta makes sense in that his hands aren't crossed. He isn't the traditional left lead player though - he had a unique way... tells me at some point when he was studying and learning, this came to him which worked beautifully for him... special musician...RIP John
