Genuinely don’t understand how people hate this movie. The cinematography alone makes it a standout
Mr Kornfeld would beg to differ
It's the music and the forced story for me. I 100% agree with Zach that this is a Kidz Bopified version of the Beatles
i'm the first to say i don't usually agree with Kelsey but I've NEVER agreed more to anyone in the world than Kelsey with this movie. I would DIE for this movie.
I don’t get how Zach’s entire position for hating this movie is that he’s a Beatles snob but he doesn’t know what Hey Jude was written by McCartney for Lennon’s son??
saw this ep just to watch garrick struggle to not fully dissociate from his body for an hour lmaoo
Now I need to know how Zach and Kelsey feel about the movie "Yesterday"
Yeah when Zack said he just wanted a simple love story lol... I really loved Yesterday!
I was literally just coming to the comments halfway through to say they need to do Yesterday!
Zach’s snobbery is showing in this one 😂 He was definitely one of those kids who didn’t want to like things other people liked growing up. This movie is good and the soundtrack is amazing. Maybe not the best movie ever or not made for fancy critics like Zach but it is good
We need Barbie princess and the pauper.
It would make the best episode
barbie nutcraker i need to know if kelsey thinks the nutcracker is hot too
2:30 two minutes in and I just have to say Zach you are wrong about everything and I will stand with Kelsey to defend this movie till the end of time
-The second Zach said "He's the only person to ever cover the Beatles better than the Beatles" is when I gave up trying to understand his opinion in this episode lmao.
-My dad used to sing I Want To Hold Your Hand to me when we crossed streets when I was little. It holds a special place in my heart.... The slow sapphic version in this movie gave the song a whole second life for me.
-I've just seen a face (the movie version) gets stuck in my head for weeks at a time regularly and I'm so okay with that.
-Kelsey wins this episode.
One of these days y’all are going to let Garrick finish a sentence lol
Zach complaining about how the characters are doing the literal things they’re singing about - does he know what a musical is…?
Kelsey you are so right queen and im only a few seconds into this video but ur so right.
It's a musical, Zach. Couldn't roll my eyes harder at his reactions.
Red white and royal blue next 🙌
I GASPED at the title. I truly did not think I’d see the day. TEARS IF JOY IN MY EYES FOR YOU GUYS COVERING THIS
I screamed. This has been my comfort movie for a decade lmao never thought I’d see the day either !
My Beatles hot take is that the Across the Universe/Jim Sturgess version of "I've Just Seen a Face" is better than The Beatles version
I couldn’t agree more!
Yes. It's the only version I listen to.
"Across the Universe and over my head" -Garrick
The I Want You/Heavy is so iconic
That version of I wanna hold your hand is perfection, how dare you.
PLEASE watch Zathura, the most underrated movie on this planet (off this planet) directed by the king himself, Jon Favreau starring Josh Hutchinson, Kristen Stewart and Dax Shepard.
Oh no Kelsey doesn’t know Love in Vegas is closing. In the next few weeks.
I was 21 in 2007 and a snob Silverlake (LA) hipster and I LOVED this movie. I couldn't get enough.
KELSEY I RIDE WITH YOU AT DAWN FOR DEFENDING THE BEST MOVIE MUSICAL
*Red, White & Royal Blue*
I know the strike is over but we need a D’angelo episode, I NEED to see everyone panic at “Untitled”.
I feel like they talked about d'angelo at length during the usher episode, no?
This is giving me flashbacks to Moulin Rouge. Zachs' opinions and feelings are real and valid- they're just wrong. He did love Cats tho 🙃 soooo idk if his opinions on holds much weight on these types of films. These movies are actually good. ATU is an acid trip but I loved how it showed what was happening in the world at that time. There was war overseas and within the country. College students protesting about it and cops/ military trying to stop them. It was an extremely turbulent time. And reflecting on it now, it's crazy how history repeats itself
I hated this movie but still loved listening to you guys dissecting it
😂 same. Great episode. I love episodes where they’re gushing over how brilliant a movie is… but i like episodes like this where theyre true to the form of the podcast
zach's new hair???? slay
Nothing guilty about it. This film is always a pleasure.
YES YES YES more people need to know and appreciate the Beatles! And their less than 10 year long, revolutionary career as a band (their individual careers are a whole other beast lol)
This movie had such an impact on my family. I don’t care how loose the plot is it’s a great movie.
So if you are someone who likes this movie, you will LOVE Pirate Radio, it’s so so so much more fun
oh yeah I second this Pirate Radio was so much fun!
the way i listen to this soundtrack regularly and watch the movie at least once a year, but ill never put on a beatles record til the day i die. this movie is MAGIC. thank you kelsey!!!!!!
I am still waiting for them to review Master of Disguise. A classic movie from my childhood, that would be hilarious to see them review
Im so happy yall are covering this. Its one of my late friends favorite.
Definitely going to side with Kelsey on this one. The cinematography and interpretation and how it represented a key revolutionary moments in American history is what made this movie for me. I also grew up loving the Beatles and that era of classic rock. Though my favorite band of all time is Queen (they definitely have better harmonies) Beatles still has a high place in music history and its well deserved.
I got the Beatles 1 album gifted to me for my 3rd birthday (I’m 29 now) and used to be so obsessed with Come Together I would beg my mother to play “the typewriter song”. I called it that because of the clicking in the beginning. Across The Universe is the best jukebox musical of all time. I said it.
I'm actually too annoyed to finish this one. The slanderrrrrrrrr omg
My favorite movie of all time! Followed closely by "Amélie" (2001).
I'm not even a HUGE fan of the Beatles; I like the classics, enough. If I wanna listen to the Beatles, I pop in this soundtrack.
These are my two faves too! 🥹🤓
I turned 13 two days before Across the Universe came out and saw it in theaters TWICE. I think this movie actually altered my brain chemistry.
The amount of times I love to sing SO LOUD this soundtrack ughhhh. Also wish the first song was longer. The beetles would be proud ❤
I need to know the reason for the giant pepper grinder on the table next to Zach.
Also, love how I had a moment of connection with Kelsey about bonding with our dads over the Beatles.
Final note- started listening to this on my drive to Trader Joe’s and there was a car in front of me with a license plate that said, “B3ETL3S”
(I noticed the pepper shaker after I got home- don’t phone and drive!)
garrick still keeps being the one I relate to the most. across the universe and over my head fr. finally someone understands what it feels like when a hollywood movie (usually comedies) depends too much on references. I wanna be in on the joke too man!
just so you know my fav episodes are ones where y'all fight each other (but especially zach)
So, I loved this movie when it came out (and I was 15 years old). I haven't watched the movie all that much but I was real into the soundtrack. I enjoyed the reimagined beatles songs. Now I'm kind of over it, whatever. But I have 2 thoughts:
1. I remember Evan Rachel Wood saying in some interview that a lot of the songs were performed live on set. When Tom Hooper's Les Mis came out and they were like oh we sang the songs on set no one's ever done that. And I was like well, no.
2. The Gilmore Girls revival used an Across the Universe version of a song in an episode, and I will never be over how wild of a choice that was. I'm sure it was cheaper, but still, huh?
They need to get out here to Vegas, quick because the LOVE show is at the Mirage and that casino is closing sometime in July. The show is on it's last few runs! Kelsey! CATCH IT ONE LAST TIME!
FYI Bealtes Love ends on July 6th so get going!
Zach hating this movie is the twist I never expected
I did, he hates everything I love and vice versa.
No in my life has ever cared about the beatles (including myself) so when this movie came out i never even heard about it 💀
As someone who didn't grow up listening to the Beatles, I went into this movie completely blind and it was only about a quarter of the way that I realized they kept playing the Beatles, I have to agree with Garrick that this whole movie is filled with winks to the audience and I didn't get a single one so I just felt so out of the loop and not in on the joke. As an outsider watching this movie, without Beatles music knowledge it was very messy, I gave it a 3/5 because the acting and singing was good. Max was by far the most interesting character but the story overall was meh but I also understand I'm not the audience for it since I didn't get a single reference lol.
Same! All of my friends were super into this movie in high school. When I watched it with them, I didn't get it at all!
I don’t understand this movie either 😂😂
I’m fully convinced anyone who hates this movie just hates joy!
DO THIRTEEN!!!!!!!!!!
I can't believe how wrong Zach is.
I'm with Kelsey defending this movie with my dying breath. However I LOVE the Mr. Kite sequence cause Eddie Izzard rules.
I didn't relate to Kelsey much until this episode. I feel every word, my dad is also a die-hard Beatles fan and their music and this movie are so much of my identity and my love for him. I tear up just thinking about this fucking movie and show it to anyone who doesn't know it, it's a masterpieceeeee
I watched this movie every day after school for yeaaaaaars. I think it’s so amazing.
Sameeee
21:00 agree with Garrick! Not everyone knows the Beatles, sorry to say. Just like Zack wouldn’t know a lot of traditional black artist of the time. Plus this movie wasn’t called The Beatles Story or something, it was a reference to a song that not everybody would know, especially if you’re young.
Kelsey ur hair looks amazing! I loved this this movie. When I saw the previews I told my whole family we were all going to see it and I was the only one who was like Whoa wasn't that great?! The rest of my family had similar reactions to Zach :(
This movie was at least 45% of my personality in high school. Never thought I’d see the day when it gets covered on this podcast!
I’m here to formally announce, Zach is wrong. Thank you for your time!
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
If we're talking musicals... Phantom of the Opera w/ gerard butler plz 🥺
I’M IN LOVE WITH THIS MOVIE I--
Kelsey keeps getting too excited and arguing against a point Zach isn't making XD I love this pod, just sometimes they all need to take a time out and actively listen to what the other people were actually saying. (Garrick especially never gets to finish his thought haha)
okay i'm not gonna say this movie is perfect but i'm still siding with Kelsey
one of my fave movies of all time! i didn’t start listening to the beatles until i became obsessed with these versions
okay having finished listening i’m fascinated by the idea of it being necessary to know or like the beatles to enjoy the movie! i don’t think it dampened the experience to miss easter eggs
before i even start, must ask again for you to please do step up 3d!
You know what also came out in 2007? Hairspray! And by far the better movie musical that year. I said what I said. Periodd!!
My dad introduced me to the Beatles too. But my interest peaked when I watched the movie I am Sam. It's so good! And then I watched this movie because of Evan Rachel Wood - and I'm glad I did cause this movie dope af.
the main characters are named Jude and Lucy lol as if that doesnt tell you everything you need to know about the film
Zach you are wrong.
My hippie 9th grade english teacher showed us this movie in class and it became one of my favorite movies!
Guys please fix your spelling error it's on all channels "this iconic Beetles homage." Who the hell are the Beetles
Fantastic Mr. Fox and surfs up, please please
According to John Lennon himself the song lucy in the sky with diamonds was inspired by a drawing his son made of his friend Lucy. The picture was of lucy floating in the sky surrounded by sparkling jewlery and diamonds.
Man, I wish I was in the podcast studio for this one…..
Let me tell you…I agree with both Kelsey and Zach. I am a MASSIVE Beatles fan-like Kelsey, the Beatles were very much tied to my identity growing up and were a major connection to my parents. Probably the first indication that I am neurodivergent is how obsessive over every Beatle fact I was as a teenager/young adult. I was also a musical theater major. This movie was basically made for me. And I simultaneously love and hate it.
It all really boils down to Julie Taymor. She deserves the respect, but I have a long-standing opinion that she is an incredible visual storyteller, but a horrible story storyteller. There is no director on stage or film that can construct an image better than her. But when it comes to plot and bringing everything together-she just misses the mark. Just (try to) watch Titus or research the Spider-Man musical. And that’s very strongly what is happening in this movie. The individual numbers-amazing (for the most part). But the plot is both trying to hard and not hard enough at the same time. They are trying to echo the story of the Beatles, summarize major events of the Sixties, and have 3 love stories while also trying to span the whole decade. It’s a mighty task and it falls short. But dang the musical numbers look and sound good and the performances (for the most part) are on point. (I am also a giant Eddie Izzard fan and was very excited that she was in the movie, but…it’s not my favorite part)
Anyhow, I just wanted to share my thoughts because I have very strong opinions and was excited to see them cover this.
Side note- Jude’s character might look a little Paul MacCartneyesque, but his personal story very closely mimics John Lennon’s and what might have happened if he didn’t become part of the greatest band of all time.
i love this movie it feels like fanfic but a movie a movie that gives me similar vibes is muriels wedding !!!
I think I wanna listen to the full Beatles Discography after this podcast now 😂
I haven’t watched this movie so I can’t say if I would like it or not. But I do with that Kelsey would acknowledge that a lot of her enjoyment (at least it seems like it to me) comes from her own nostalgia and history. Which is totally valid, but other people don’t have that to endear them to a film
GASPED THE BIGGEST GASP MY FAVE MUSICAL MOVIE KELSEY I'M IN YOUR CORNER!!!
Jim Sturgess is my man if I hear a single peep against him I will fight!
Culturally I'd had only a slight bit of exposure and knowledge about the Beatles. Mostly it felt like a classic American thing that I was left out of until I watched this. It helped me feel way more connected with the band, their discography and even our American history from this point of view.
Garrick is right: if you didn’t grow up with the beetles (like me), it just doesn’t hit 🤷🏽♀️
The only bad thing about this podcast (on UA-cam) is the lack of visual reference for those curious of what they're talking about - like the rachel wood and westworld thing. Never seen the show but would like a visual ref. Since I'm watching on YT
I couldn’t agree more with Zach and Garrick. When there is no storyline and you don’t understand the references there just isn’t a lot for that kind of viewer to get from this movie. If you are a big fan of the Beatles then I could definitely see why you would love it. Or if you love visuals then I could definitely see the appeal. It wasn’t until I heard this episode that I understood the love some people have for it. It’s not to knock it for those who enjoy those things, but for people who don’t know a lot about the Beatles and who look for plot lines over visuals there just isn’t a lot those kinds of people to get out of it.
Listening to this episode and all I can think is “TWO AMERICAS” when you guys are discussing Beatles music with how adamant Kelsey is about how great the Beatles are and Garrick being nonchalant about them lol.
I like the Beatles and respect them but my parents were playing Earth Wind and Fire, Stevie and the commodores etc when I was growing up. I had to learn Beatles music on my own bc white people looked at me like I was crazy when I couldn’t spout out song titles and lyrics lol
I have always said that this movie feels like they took all the most popular Beatles songs and vomited a movie around the songs. They tried to build a story but it just didn't happen
I need y'all to do Pirate Radio (2009) now.
The Beatles' are my favorite band and have been since 10 years old!
I had to turn this off because Zach is OBJECTIVELY WRONG and it hurts to listen to. team Kelsey 🍓
I wish yall had done Yesterday!
I USED TO LOVE THIS MOVIE
Love this movie❤
Another movie for the bi girliepops. Evan Rachel Wood is such a talented actor and so pretty 🌈 I love this movie
Kelsey vs Zack and Garrick, friends off lol
yeah!!!
As a lover of abba, greece, meryl, and musicals… i hate mamma mia and this makes me feel less crazy 🤣
can we just make this Beatles month and do Yesterday
More like across the pooh-niverse
PLEASE DO YESTERDAY NEXT 😭😭😭
