my high school used to have Yamaha Strat Pacifica. great sound for pop/funk stuff and plays like butter.
Nice shirt... Likewises... classic. Great video Captain!
I have a pile of high dollar guitars and at first I thought the Variax would just be a fill in guitar but since the standard came out with my Lindy Fralin pickups. It’s now my main guitar.
Nice duo!!! Who would have thought it!! It works!! 😄
Hi there, I need to know if I can use the relay G70 with one guitar and 2 amps.
It's: Use the green channel on output A, then hit the button and use the same green channel on output B.
Does it allow this configuration?
Dammit, I was just in Anaheim a few days ago, just down the road from the convention centre. I wish I could've stayed longer and gone to NAMM.
Is possible to connect Firehawk to the amp using the 4 cable method ?
can anybody tell me if you are able to use both the balanced and unbalanced line output on the firehawk simultaneously if you want to be connected directly to the PAbut use an amp for monitoring purposes?
I like the standard better than any Tyler Variax. This is now 2021 and your right I bough my first 2 Variax standard new for around 750. Now even used they are bumping 1000. I think the standard has become the most popular playable and great sounding Variax guitars made. The magnetic pickups are standard Yamaha style pickups but you can easily pop those out and put your favorite custom pickups that you favor. I love the standard neck over any fender neck. You owe it to yourself to try one out. I have a friend so stuck on tubes and no dsp would never even touch my other Variax guitars, he tried my standard and his face lit up. He hung on to it playing about an hour. I use the Variax standard with the line 6 pod HD500x and 2 line 6 DT 50 amps . The whole system is controlled by the hd 500x or now the newer helix. I’ve been playing since 64 and this is the best rig I’ve ever played through.
Is there yamaha variax lefty available ?
Really looking forward to a Line 6 Helix demo.
If it's made from the ground up for the last 4 years the amp models should be impressive......hopefully.
Bit pricey so I'm really wanting the Andertons style review to turn up so I can make my choice.
As a long time user of Line 6 products (DT25, POD HD...etc) I actually like the idea of putting the variax system on a more entry level instrument, though it will need to be even more competively priced than £599 in UK if it's going to sell in volume. If I was to use a variax it would most certainly be as a studio back up, practice or occasional live guitar for some open tunings/slide work, and so there's no way I would want to pay high end prices for one. These guitars will never replace our traditional instruments, hey we are guitarists after all(lol) so theres little point in making them with beautiful carved tops and amazing sunburts. Get the price right, make them reliable, working players guitars and they WILL sell :)) Ahh those 23 years in sales/marketing prior to becoming full time guitarist just won't leave me!! Thanks for the excellent discussions and reviews guys :))
I have only one negative about the Variax standard. There’s no belly contour. They had to put the battery somewhere, but since you don’t need batteries to just play the magnetic pickups, I’ve been making custom Variax guitars for years. I’m building a custom Stratavariax which is a swamp ash strat body with all the contours plus neck contours, and I’m leaving off the battery. Because I’m almost always using my standard with my HD500x or my soon to be coming helix. Those power the Variax. But if I just wanna rake my Variax to my buddies and plug in IVE still got my Lindy Fralin pickups in a regular strat. Awesome.
Cap'n Lee, you lucky dog... Have fun at the Namm Show, I've always wanted to sneak in but I live in Florida and don't know anyone well enough in the business. If I mention your name at the door, you think they would let me in?
"Neutral", "Won't offend", "Very familiar" - really ramping up the sales pitch!
i have owned 3 variaxes.. sold them all due to them looking to "modern" .. I love this one.. however if they ever make a variax that looks like an SBG2000 I will take it!
Fucking for the love of god give me a maple fretboard option
Hugh Jashole I'm not spending that much for a guitar. There is a maple korean JTV, and I might get that.
Lemmy Koopa You can probably buy a custom made neck from Warmoth and just attach it to the Variax body.
Hugh Jashole The one I'd list is 999 USD. JTV 69S SSS in black with maple fretboard.
I have an older Variax, but I'd really like to upgrade.
Hugh Jashole I'd love both of them if I had the money, but I'm currently more of a Fender style guy.
I also want a tremolo. Not a floyd rose though.
Hi everyone!
Does anyone know if Line 6 POD HD500X also works with the Amplifi app please?
Thanks!
Rob
It doesnt
awesome
Nice to hear that the collaboration between Andertons and guitarist mag means better recorded sounds. Most video's shot at Andertons are well made but with a somewhat dull sound missing sparkle. A bit lifeless. Have you used different recording gear?
It still has that raspy HD tone. It's nasty!
Line 6 products have just been industry leading now for a couple decades.
Alright, a quick thought on the Firehawk FX. This is from about an hour of playing w/ the system. From unboxing to pairing my ipad w/ the unit, i'd say it took 5 minutes and most of that was the unboxing. Dead simple to set up.
My initial thoughts are that I will most likely stay w/ my HD500x. A few things to note, and this may be just a learning curve like the HD500x took me.
1. Getting a level sound between patches seems difficult. I'm sure there is a way to go into each patch and change the level of the sound. There is a Level option and you can change the Guitar volume and Overall volume. Maybe someone can shed some light for those coming over from a HD500x. I am used to being able to go into each patch and easily change the output level so each patch has the same volume.
2. App seems to be slow. It's taken sometimes up to 20-30 seconds to load the patch on ipad. I also tried on android and have the same delay.
3. You can only have one reverb and it is the last effect block that cannot be moved. I use my HD500x patches at times w/ 2 reverbs on the patch. An example would be a spring reverb and a Particle reverb for ambiance.
4. Moving effects blocks are not to your desired spot. Some effects can only be moved to a certain block.
5. No additional compressors. You only get 1 type of a compressor.
6. I love the concept of being able to control from and ios/android device and it works beautifully and is simple.
7. Bluetooth on my device looses connectivity at times and I have to reconnect.
8. No looper functionality. I play guitar at church and use the looper all the time. Of course you can add an external looper.
9. For some reason when you tap in tempo for delays you hear the pitch change as it gets to the tapped tempo. It's almost like the tempo slowly gets to tempo
10. Hopefully in the next release, Line 6 adds a pedal board that has the same feature set of the HD500x with ios/android controls.
I hope this helps you decide on what to go with. If you are used to being able to completely control every aspect of your guitar rig, stick w/ the HD500x.

The helix must not have been out when the fire hawk came out but the helix does things the fire hawk does on a super steroid.
Hey Captain... can you confirm in terms of hardware if the Firehawk uses Pod HD technology (as opposed to Amplifi FX100 which uses Pod XT technology)
Wouldn't that be the main attraction to getting the Firehawk?
Yes - the idea is that Amplifi products use a Pod XT engine, whereas Firehawk uses a Pod HD500 engine. Cheers
CaptAnderton
If I already own a Pod HD, would you recommend this product?
Will it provide me anything new other than then bluetooth controller?
CaptAnderton Strato Fever Not the biggest fan of XT when it comes to getting a nice tone, so this is nice. Not that you can't get decent sounds out of the older PODs but they don't have that life in the sound that modern modelers have.
Lemmy Koopa I get great tones from my Line 6 POD XT and Line 6 POD XT PRO. It really has a lot to do with how you e.q. and program them. The newer ones just get easier to edit and add even more features. Also, running a stereo tube preamp after these, really make them sound so much better. I mainly use mine as just away to practice or record silent. I prefer my Line 6 POD XT PRO with my rack effects. The size of the Line 6 POD XT bean is really great for portability. I am waiting for a 7-string Variax to come along!
Nice! But, and I know I'm alone, I miss the look of the pickup-less ones.
the more wireless ios wifi bluetooth stuff they bring out the more I love my M13
yes...maple please
Rooooob ! where r uuu !!!! O.O' ?
hoooo nice :D
The helix has 4 pairs of fx loops
The Yamaha Guitar is very cold, all hard corners and radius all CNC I wouldnt play one if you put a gun top my head... They need to get a designer to redo that line..
awesomejohnnet I know. I started the video, went to take a slug of wine, and almost spit-took all over my computer. That was a hilarious, old-school opening. Thanks you bastards. :)
Thanks for the demo, guys. Mixed feelings about the products...the wireless stuff looks great, shame I don't have any use for it! Firehawk looks nice but I already have an HD500X so I've got that covered. I also have a DT25 but no Variax so I should be a prime target for buying one, but these new Variax Standards certainly won't tempt me. They look like a huge missed opportunity - about as boring a design as you could find, Lee and Chris were really struggling to say anything positive about them. Anyone who wants a Variax should buy one of the JT Variaxes before they disappear!
If Line 6 & Yamaha want to keep the Variax product line alive (and they should - lots of my friends have them), I think these ones need to be a bit cheaper (maybe £499 rather than £599) and they need a more expensive one that's a lot sexier.
This video also made me think of another missed opportunity in all of this. The Firehawk and tablet communicate wirelessly...why don't the Variax and the Firehawk do the same? They've demonstrated all of the necessary technology in this video, and it's a much cleaner solution than messing around with lots of extra boxes. That would be my suggestion as the USP for the sexier model of the Variax that I mentioned.
I tend to agree. Why can't they include all the different guitar models in the Firehawk?
I understand that I probably live on Mars where Ipads, pods, and brains are still considered novelty fluff. But as much as I want to be impressed with new Lina 6 stuff they seem to want to shove an "I" down my throat at every turn.
I get it.. it's trendy, it's convenient, it's functional... but to me, it also places the products that are snuggling up to the "I" standard into the novelty gadget zone. So, unless I am gifted an Ipad I would never seriously consider this stuff for purchase.
... and now that the world had lost one of the greatest innovators of this century in Mr Jobs, I don't see the "I" craze as bullet proof any longer which will lessen the desirability of this stuff in the not-so-distant future.
I think the emphasis is more on "mobility" not the "i". Now that IK Multimedia has released a A/D converter compatible with Android, there's opportunity to take these novelty gadgets to other platforms as well. There's so many possibilities when using this new tech, even with vintage gear. I often connect my iPad/iPhone through the effects loop on my amp while using JamUp Pro or POD Mobile for effects. It's a great way to experiment with signal chains without forking out the extra $$$ it would cost for the actual effects pedals/units.
*****
I would have one if they actually did something that I cant already do.
I'm not lacking technology. I'm lacking need.
My Laptop runs circles around any Ipad on the market. I can run plugins, virtual instruments, and a full DAW micd to a 4x12 or DI from any sound source I choose.
I don't consider it "need" to go grab an Ipad specifically to interface with a Line 6 (or any other) product because a gizmo doesnt create a need for a gadget simply because they both exist.
*****
Absolutely.
Now if they could only fit a real tube amp into that form factor, I'd stand in line for days to get one.
IPushHard try the BluGuitar Amp 1
www.bluguitar.com/AMP1.html
IPushHard We'll there's not really a _need_ for a guitar or an effects pedal either. A lot of people have these gadgets and find great use in them.
Personally I wouldn't want to control my multi-effects with an iPad even if I had one. To me it makes things more complicated rather than simplifying it. My old Tonelab SE is far easier to dial in and I don't need any other gadget. Then again, it doesn't have as many models as this one has, which makes it a bit easier.
Such enthusiasm for the product. Chris looks eminently bored.
i cant be the only one that felt like lee actually hated this guitar? more then any other review of his ive seen.
Prices have shot up in the uk. Variax gone up £300 in a 6 years. Thanks Brexit and pandemic
I know it's a matter of taste, but these Line 6 amp modelling pedals to me still sounds as bad as they did 10 years ago. Sterile and artificial. But then again, some people like that sound I guess. Good thing there are options.
..is it me or are they both saying 'errrh' a lot?!...made me chuckle, i never liked these yamaha designed guitars, im sure they feel fine, just not my cuppa!
That's jet lag! This was day one of our trip, so our bodies think its about 3am at this point!
heehe, no problem!...im enjoying the namm vids! 👍
I rarely Ever give a hate comment .. But these guys Talk way too much about nothing and not enough about what the Product does. Wasted 20 min of my life..
Anyone considering Line6, think again. Look up Pod HD 500 Broken USB on google. A manufacturing defect that was never admitted to, or resolved. Line6 churn out poor quality products and have zero customer service. If you can't get a simple USB socket right, I'd never trust you with my guitar because I need reliability.
I bought one of these on friday morning and took it back friday afternoon. Sounds ok but won't connect to an iPad. Its a TOTAL FAIL unit that line 6 know is failed. It simply does not work and Line 6 are con artists for trying to sell it......They are literally stealing money from people. I bought a brand new iPad mini 4 after buying the Firehawk so there is absolutely no excuse for it constantly losing connection. Worst thing of all is that it fails to save presets even when it is connected, giving a message saying "failure to save, presets are downloading to your firehawk"...................and thats when it actually connects for longer than 30 seconds. Ultimately the unit is a total fail and line 6 should be liable to legal action through false advertising and stealing peoples money. Be wise youtubers and avoid Line 6.
Total piece of crap' the JTV was the only decent variax , I sent one of these back an hour after it arrived with bad neck faults plus battery connection failure , this is just the pits.
