  • You may have heard that hill starts can be tricky. They can be in a manual car, as it requires good coordination and a lot of practice. However, hill starts are far easier in an automatic car - as it’s almost impossible to stall the engine or roll backwards. In this video we will show how to do a hill start in an automatic car, so you can feel confident next time you’re pulling away uphill at a busy junction. Before we get started, please consider subscribing to our channel so you don't miss our next video - and if you have any questions about this video then comment below.

      San Francisco also has its hills although by no means, even among cities in English-speaking parts of the world, is it alone. Toronto, the capital of Ontario, Canada, also has although I live in a part of the city that has only a handful of hills within reasonable walking distance of my residence.

      This video has answered most of my questions. When I finally purchase an electric car in the next two years having only driven a manual the only question I have is if you are on a hill facing down and cars are parked close in front of you and behind you and you need to go forward and back to get out of the tight spot that would be a major worry for me in an automatic, whilst in a manual it is simple.

    This is an excellent, informative video. Years ago, I had an old car that, in spite of having an automatic transmission, would roll backward if stopped on an uphill grade, and required a simultaneous use of the brake and accelerator for an instant. Once when I was invited to a colleague's home, I had to explain why I had to park in the street, because the car couldn't negotiate the steep grade of the driveway!

      It’s so much nicer to teach in an automatic car without all of the clutch and gear mistakes! Our blue Leaf has a range of 240 miles, which is plenty for a days lessons - however being able to charge at home is currently the key to it all. Hopefully the public charging network will continue to expand so that everyone can charge away from home as easily as they currently buy petrol. 👍🏼

    Always find it strange to see them feeding the wheel. Here in Belgium, you are allowed to do that but, especially for sharp corners, it is advised to cross over your hands since this allows you to turn quicker and reduce the turning circle. My driving instructor taught me to cross my arms and if necessary even use one hand to quickly rotate the steering wheel (only one handed at slow speeds).

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  4 роки тому +1

      That's interesting, as we would suggest people 'feed the wheel' on tight corners for exactly the same reasons - it can be done quickly and precisely. In all honesty, it doesn't really matter which steering technique you prefer, as long as you can control the car properly.

    Thanks for this video! I haven't ever had to do a hill start on a very steep hill so always quite anxious about this.
    I have a question, I have a 1 litre C1 with hill start assist and when on a small incline in the past I have put on my handbrake and kept the car in drive. When I came off the brake to give it some gas before taking the handbrake off, the car had started to roll back so I had to slam my foot down to get going to avoid hitting the car behind me. I guess this means that the hill start doesnt work when the handbrake is applied? Would the car not roll back if I put it in neutral (no parking gear) and switched to drive? On hills in an auto do I need to put my handbrake on at all as I learnt to do this in my automatic lessons. Thanks!

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  4 роки тому +1

      In our experience hill start assist usually works when the handbrake isn't applied - it just holds the foot brake on longer as you move your foot to drive away. Maybe go somewhere quiet and hilly to practice - you could try using only the foot brake (to test hill start assist), the handbrake (like your lessons) or your left foot (as we showed). 👍🏼

    My 2011 Toyota Auris has an MMT gearbox. The car will roll back on any hill. Also it has no electronic parking brake or creep function. I found myself in a situation when I had to stop on a really steep hill. When was time to go I pressed the gas pedal but the car keep rolling back so I had to floor the gas pedal and only then I managed to stop rolling and go forward. Would you recommend using both brake and gas at the same time to avoid this? Also with down hill I use manual mode to engine brake.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool

    How about reversing uphill in an automatic? I had an issue when I rented an automatic a couple of years ago when I was on a very steep hill, trying to reverse. I had a car in front of me very close, parked and went very close to it a couple of times before I was able to engage reverse and pull away from it. I've got to say, the most confusing thing was that the handbreak was one of those button handbreaks so it's either on or off, can't gauge like a normal old school handbrake. What's your advice? There are many different types of automatic transmission - such as dual clutch, torque converter, single clutch automated manual, constantly variable, fixed ratio.... but the gear selector that the driver uses are generally similar. • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  4 роки тому

      The only problem with a manual handbrake is that students often fail to fully release them, and then the car starts beeping at them! In contrast an electric parking brake will release itself as we drive away - so I would prefer that system. Our pupils have never had to choose - as our manual cars have always had a normal handbrake, and our new cars that have electric brakes are automatic.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool

      It sounds obvious, but an automatic car is the same as a manual car, except for the gearbox. This means that the car will choose and control it’s gears for you - but everything else will be the same. The driver will still have to operate all the other car controls in exactly the same way as they would in a manual car - so all of our other videos showing how to steer a car, brake progressively or maintain good road position are still relevant. Just ignore anything about clutch control or gear selection!

    Question - while watching your videos we saw a few mock tests, in them some of the drivers let the steering wheel slide through their hands after turning, but the instructor didnt mention it, is letting it slide instead of feeding it now acceptable in the driving test ?
    My wife is learning to drive, but because of the lockdown there is no lessons, so i have been teaching her, in the mean time she has been watching your and another channels videos to learn, so want her to learn the right things and iron out any habits, as some things are different to when I learnt in 91.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  4 роки тому +3

      In the UK the examiner on a Driving Test will be marking your control over your car, not how you hold the steering wheel. Crossing your hands or letting the wheel slip a little will not be a problem unless it leads to a loss of control. Good luck with everything!

    Hello,I find your videos to be very instructive and simple.I have one query, does the creep functionality also depend upon the load being carried by the car?Lets say if there are 4 passengers and luggage.Will the car tend to roll back on a hill or will the creep functionality keep it static (or maybe even push it ahead) when starting from stop?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  3 роки тому

      It is hard to know for sure, but the creep seems to have a set amount of 'drive' - so if the hill is steep enough the car will roll back if the parking brake isn't used.

      @@AdvanceDrivingSchool Thanks for the response.Perhaps it will be useful to add that caveat in your video just to be sure the readers don't get the wrong impression that creep will move the vehicle forward on reasonable incline irrespective of the load it's carrying.Just my thoughts :-)

    Not all automatics have enough drive at idle to move uphill .
    Instead of using only the right foot ; hold the brake with the left foot and apply a little power with the right foot ; you then release the brake to move off ; this is also the best way to control the car for low speed manoeuvring .

    I don't understand why you held the car with the foot pedal at the traffic lights. What if you were hit from behind? Or if your foot slipped? The car would move forward when somebody is crossing the road. Why did you not apply the handbrake?
    Edit: You will also piss off the driver behind you if it was night time and your brake lights are constantly illuminated.
    I'm not an advanced driver but I'd like to know the logic here as to why what you done in that video was appropriate, because personally I would apply the handbrake unless it was a simple touch stop with everything clear.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  3 роки тому +2

      The reason that we don’t use the handbrake at traffic lights is that it has no benefit. The handbrake only brakes two wheels, so would take longer to stop the car after a collision than the foot brake, which brakes all four wheels. It is very unlikely that our foot would slip off the brakes (even in a collision) but even if we did release the brake pedal the car would only creep forward very slowly until we pressed it again. The brake lights staying illuminated at night is worth consideration, and in this case we prefer to select Park on the transmission, as this will hold the car stationary and allow the engine to idle in neutral - whereas if we simply apply the handbrake in Drive the engine is still under a little load, which wastes fuel. Ultimately it is up to you to decide when to use your handbrake, as there are no official rules about it’s use - we prefer to save it for when we park our car or need to do a very steep hill start.
