monster player...he had a great wave of playing in the 90’s before he passed. It was a period of enormous growth.

Growth? How dare you say like that in the front of this virtuoso.... His playing has already reached to the near perfect level since 60's when he made masterful records at the Bluenote

@@SuperHun92 I agree there was growth. Joe figured out how to get the rest of the band to follow what he was doing better in the 90's. I can't tell why, so it's most likely a little bit of a lot of things that he's just doing even better then he had been in earlier decades. His bands were never as interactive in the past.

@@SuperHun92 and then he just rode on out on the same level til he died? Just practiced enough to keep his "near perfect" chops? Bullshit.
i think he would resent the suggestion. That he, or anybody was 1) ever anywhere near "perfection" on an instrument , which is not possible. Because there aint not such thing as perfection, so how can one be near it? it's a meaningless human concept and word. vague and inaccurate. Specious even. "perfect voicing"? Opinion. Blah blah.
"Perfect intonation?" Never possible. " Perfect technique". Not even Tatum.
      2) that he'd didn't continue to work expand his ability to express himself. even a little bit.
Anyway, don't get all indignant for him. It's not dignified, and
he'd just laugh if he read your comment. like "thanks son, but NOBODY was ever anywhere near perfect. Not me, for sure."
" How dare you" really? You actually say that? I don't think you do, not to real people in real time.
Look in the mirror, say "how dare you?" and see what you look like.... Really, pops. cool out.

Early 1980's NYC, Lush Life on Bleecker Street in the Village, Joe approached and asked how I was doing. I shrugged and said, "Yeah man!, you're doing great, I love the lessons you're giving me, thank-you!"
He was warm and real, I could have sworn he was mistaking me for someone else, ..... I've thought about it every once in a while and while drawing no conclusions I believe Joe to have been an authentic soul.
Where are the authentic souls now?, anyone?

How do you define "authentic soul" and what are your criteria? Are you basing it on Joe's playing? Because there are plenty of amazing improvisors out there - on tenor and on so many instruments. Or are you basing it on his congeniality and gregariousness to you on that particular occasion? Similarly, I've had pre/post performance conversations with Dave Holland - and a few others - that showed me a pretty nice person behind the monster player. There are good souls out there. Joe wasn't the last of them!

One of the greatest tenor players of all time. He belongs the Coleman Hawkins school of tenor players. This school had a big sound. It included players like John Coltrane , Ben Webster and Sonny Rollins. You can also include Branford Marsalis and Joe Lovano
