That's not mutually exclusive with the sanctions being a primary cause of their economic troubles, also the sanctions didn't happen alone. No one saying that the government didn't also mismanage the situation, but sanctions on oil - which is 90% of their export and over 50 % of their fiscal revenue is definitely a dominant factor. Also if you actually look at the global oil production/export trends and Venezuelan economic difficulties before the sanctions, e.g. 2012 - 2017 you can see their production and export and resulting revenues were in decline along with/ in line with the globe, but following the 2017 sanctions they feel off of a cliff which is contrary to the recovery and positive growth of global oil revenue by the rest of the world in 2017. Also let's forget their foreign assets and trade currency reserves were seized from them, which heavily affected their ability to trade in general - not to mention that other countries over comply when the US imposes sanctions and restricts trade in general even outside of the explicit sanctions.

'not picking sides' but telling only half of the story, where the other half is critical? You are taking sides and also misleading.
Gold is frozen, not seized and kept. UK(and anyone really) recognized Juan Guaidó as legitimate president and Guaidó requested the assets be frozen. There is an ongoing court case over this.

The sad thing is that the big guys always get their way: the regime has been terrible, undoubtedly, but the economic sanctions imposed are not harmless ("sanctions made it a little bit harder", really?) , they strangulate common people, not the politicians they are "intended to defeat" ( US and is relation (external economy/politics) with coups in Latin America show a long history on this... in Nixon words "make the economy scream" )
