DAVE WALKER & BLACK SABBATH - Junior's Eyes (HQ Audio)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 24 вер 2013
- The audio from the sole public performance by Black Sabbath with Dave Walker on vocals.
From the 1978 BBC Midlands programme "Look! Hear!", the band perform "Junior's Eyes".
The lyrics and vocal melody on this embryonic version of the song are radically different to the recorded version on "Never Say Die" whilst the musical parts are in a different order.
Best audio of this track i've heard, hopefully the original video footage will surface somewhere eventually.
I still prefer the version with Ozzy, but this is an interesting historical curio and the only musical document of the short time Walker was in the band.
This is always my example when people say, " Ozzy doesn't write the music or the words" to his songs. Ok, but he is the one who comes up with the melodies of the songs, and that is what MAKES the songs great. You can have great words, great music and a bad melody and the song won't be remembered. Go check out the first version of Sober by Tool for what I mean, it was horrible. Melody is most important.
You are so right. And I've seen that C.A.D. 'Sober' clip (looked like it was from a public access show or something). Truly horrible. An absolute mess.
@@misterbungle3251Ozzy wrote most of the lyrics on Vol 4. Also Solitude, Sabbra Cadabbra and The Writ.
Also a few on Technical Ecstasy.
It's like Black Sabbath infused with Fleetwood Mac. As bizarre as it sounds I have to admit it's pretty cool.
Fleetwood Mac Chicken Shack Savoy Brown and Spooky Tooth were very influential on the early days of British hard rock and heavy metal. I don't think Sabbath Judas Priest UFO Iron Maiden or even Def Leppard would have made it without that Bargain Basement blooze of those bands.
Once ozzy was let go Dave walker played with them for a short period of time, with Dave they also performer war pigs on BBC, Dave left Sabbath and Ozzy returned briefly then was fires for good then Dio joined .
breakout and swinging the chain from never say die were also written while he was in the band
It’s funny cuz Walker was briefly in Fleetwood Mac as well
This version is interesting but Ozzy's vocals on the final version just put the song on an emotionally completely different level. One of my favourite Ozzy Sabbath songs.
Ye people say he is a shitty singer, but he layered a completely new melody on top this. Dave Walker just mumbling something with the same melody as the drums and bass. Ozzy's voice also pierces through the music so well it cuts you to your soul.
Completely agree! These were troubled times for the band indeed but I still gotta say, I love this album! Not sure why everyone hates it so much..?
Best quality recording of the Dave Walker's version
Makes you understand why Ozzy's sense of melody is fundamental to anything Sabbath did before 1980. There is nothing about this vocal, no matter how good it is, that makes it stick in your head. Ozzy knows melody. And as far as singing goes, well, Ozzy on Sabotage kicks about everyone's ass who thought they were singing "hard rock." Ozzy showed everyone how to sing metal, before anyone knew what that was. 1975 - Ozzy on Sabotage is the performance of his career.
I truly appreciate this comment. But...you're saying that Iommi and Butler didn't have an equal or greater sense of melody (they're the ones who hired Walker)?
Well they knew a direction they could go, and wouldn't you say Dio fits more in this direction? And yes maybe they do have that sense, but what Ozzy did to the basis of the song certainly does stick in your mind a bit more, no? :D
Sabbath did a great job on the Heaven And Hell album without Ozzy, closer to something like this.
nobody sounds like ozzy, only Dio stood out and set his ground, but his one of the best singers of all time. Still Ozzy is the man!
Ozzy lyrics was also about the death of his father around the time. One of the factors of his breakdown at the time.
This is great. Walker did an excellent job on this track and the band sounds so tight here. I also prefer Ozzy on the vocals but I think I may prefer Iommi, Butler, and Ward on this version it sounds amazing!
You mean you prefer the melody with Ozzy.
Because Dave Walker has a lot more voice than the "out of tune" Ozzy.
chevymoto78 right on!!!
@@maupric Walker sounds like he's trying to force a shit out in this one
@@alnil5533 It's called effort, something the last two Ozzy albums lack entirely.
please
This Version Of Junior's Eyes is not bad, woulda been cool if Bill Sang on this particular version of Juniors Eyes, I think it woulda worked :P
He did a damn good job on Swinging the Chain. The album version is one of my favorite Ozzy era Sabbath songs tho but I wouldn't mind hearing both by any means.
I wish Bill Ward singing lead sometimes was something that carried into the other lineups he was involved in after Ozzy.
I didn't think Dave Walker could cut it then and i still don't.
i for one liked it and would have liked to hear more
If this been properly recorded and fully produced it would have been absolutely fantastic.
This is as good as it gets, raw!
No.
I think Dw sounds so cool
Black Sabbath 1977 Midlands radio broadcast. Look! Here! BBC.
I hope we get to hear not only the studio recordings with Dave Walker but also the initial Ozzy sessions of what would eventually become Heaven and Hell someday....probably around the time we also get a Iommi/Martin reunion.
Well, we can dream, but I doubt the Walker sessions or the pre-Heaven & Hell stuff will ever get an official release. The Pre-H&H recordings in particular would mean the band would have to explain away too much of their history that doesn't fit with the party line they've been spouting over the years. Like Geezer's absence from the band for a lot of the early H&H recordings for instance, with ex-Elf & Rainbow bassist Craig Gruber taking his place. You can read his version of events here: jeffcramer.blogspot.com/2009/11/very-candid-conversation-with-craig.html
I can't get enough of this, and Junior's Eyes is my favorite song off of NSD.
Sounds great. I like it. Harmonica mixes it up too. Solid. Thanks
it's good for what it is!
O matko! Nigdy nie powiedziałbym, że to Black Sabbath, choć riffy Tony'ego są bardzo charakterystyczne. Świetny kawałek, którego nigdy przedtem nie słyszałem. Dziękuję!!!
nice, would like to hear some more Brown Sabbath

@Greg Hubbard why are you so triggered?
I also like Purple Sabbath.
excellent version great sounding track
Im feeling it. Sounds excellent.

Who is your number 1 of your list of top drummer's?

That's it! A perfect song!! Epic.einderfull, interesting to hear sad that we can't hear more Sabbath songs with walker (some ones incl Never say Die where filmed or just recorded on tape during a gig what he did with the band)
What a treat to hear this track. Walker has a great voice. It's a different song for the most part. This is one of my favorite songs because of Ozzys' haunting chorus. But Walkers version is really cool. The other three guys are pretty good too. Haha
WoW..
Crazy ...
yet very cool..
Thankx for posting it..
\m/ Keep Rockn!!
Best "Black Company" song Ive ever heard !!!
I love the real version of this but Dave does a great job here. I enjoyed it.
I used to work with Dave walker in Bozeman Montana he’s the reason for my British Accent I didn’t want to amid it to him back in the day but he is really the reason why I picked it up he was always drinking Johnny Walker’s in Coffee at work
Dave Walker in Bozeman, Montana?
Now that rocked!
Countryfied *
I like it. I could see this band in a different universe.
Sencillamente espectacular! !!!!
never heard of DAVE WALKER before (no disrespect DAVE) love your whisky vocals, but your not SABBATH material to me. JR'S EYES ,HELL yes, spot on. you know what your doing. can't wait to discover more about you. thanks for listening, DAVE ✌️from a new fan SPACE RANGER JYM
Walker is awesome on this track! It's a shame he didn't do more. I love Ozzy and Dio , of course, but Walker did an excellent job in his short stint as frontman.
Maybe would've passed as an early deep purple song or something, but not deserving of the name and style of Sabbath.
Would have loved to have heard more tracks with DW. Amazing vocals
they sound so good stripped down
I have heard the audio before. Does the actual FOOTAGE still exist?
I ask myself the same question , it's TV show so it should be ! But I never found it on UA-cam.
It must exist but it might be suppressed (by the Sabbath camp) not to appear on YT. There are 3 songs from the same TV show by QUARTZ with Geoff Nicholls on guitar before he joined Sabbath in '79. Those can be found on YT.
@@bobthompson937 yes on a Birmingham TV show
@@michaelschmidt9708 I feel that to be common. I saw a slade live show on youtube about 15 years ago where their costumes were somehow even more ridiculous than what they usually wore, and the singer was not playing guitar but marching back and forth while someone was dressed like a cat, yeah that exists only in memory now
Wow that is his good! I never heard that song before. I love it. Thank you
They also did War Pigs during that same show appearance. I have yet to hear it anywhere, and hopefully that surfaces.
It wouldn't goes far without Ozzy's vocal, no melody, sounds like Black Sabbath when they were playing blues.
Even if Ozzy voice isn't great it's unique and he knows how to put memorable melodies in songs that makes them sticks to your mind.
very powerful song
I hope the video of this surfaces some day
It really sounds like the old bluesy Fleetwood Mac. Like this version but it really shows how significant ozzy's voice is and how important he is and was for the band identity.
I don't hear anything reminiscent of Peter Green here. Oddly enough, "The Green Manalishi" might have been a great Sabbath song.
Dave Walker was in the Bob Welch-Christine McVie Fleetwood Mac, and was only in the band for less than six months.
Stephen Hopkins - and like Sabbath, he didn't really fit in FM.
Dave Walker was at his best in Savoy Brown... I always though he was an odd choice for Sabbath, and maybe if he joined Mac off the heels of green he would have fit in, but they were a light rock band by then which made Walker's voice sound at odds
It's interesting in it's own right. The overtly bluesy vocals and harp are cool, but Ozzy's absence illustrates how unique his anguished and alienated delivery made Ozzy connect with kids in a real way- he was not a crooner, or a swaggering cocky rooster, or a glam boy etc.... Ozzy is totally engaging and relatable. I love the final version that is Ozzys homage to his dad, with one off the all time greatest slinky laid back bass grooves opening the track. Iommi's playing and layering of guitars all over Never Say Die is fantastic. The ethereal melodies floating around near the end drift like spirits. I totally disagree with Never Say Die naysayers. It is a unique and brave album, with some of their most realized and adventurous tracks.
Cool thoughts and I agree.....I stumbled here as I am a huge Savoy Brown fan and Dave Walker was my 2nd favourite vocalist of theirs, behind Chris Youlden.
I love music and finding and hearing cool things.
NSD is brilliant and i wish they had never broke up,they were ready to offer great music in 80s but i guess things were really bad back then for them.Ozzy with Black Sabbath was the real rock singer he put his soul in the songs without caring to be the star or whatever
One of my favourite Sabbath songs in it's final mix. So powerful. I know NSD was slated back in the day, but listen to it now....it stands up.
@@user-it1ju6br7p Lucky for us they didn't break up and released more masterpieces in the 80s!
Serious Paul Rogers vibes!
I have the footage both from juniors eyes and warpigs from the show...Dave will be re recording this version for our next album with bev bevan on drums
I liked that shit so much; i don't know how many times I've heard it.
Most Bizarre Black Sabbath's lineup. Thanks God Ozzy returns.
I still would like to see Iommi do something with this line up, maybe make a side project that has this song and the rest of the album that they had completely drawn up, just curiosity though
Just for one lp. Afterwards dio came in.
Love Dave Walker’s growl! This would’ve been pretty cool had it been fully realized but Ozzy returned
Que riff wa wa, fantástico....
Oh wow, this sounds amazing compared to the old version that's been floating around forever.
I actually really like it 🤘🤘🤘
Dave Walker is one of the most underrated singers of all time
Nice!
ozzy knows how to put a chorus where nothing is, unlike this guy...
Que gran voz encajo muy bien en black sabbath
This version has way more of a Green Manalishi feel than the Never Say Die version.
OOPS sorry DAVE,love your rendition of JR"s EYES, thanks a 1000 MUCHLY's SPACE RANGER JYM
I think it sounds amazing, it may have inspired some singers and bands to give it a shot in the years to come if Sabbath could pull this off without Ozzy, being the pioneers they actually are.
Junior's eyes looked up to the skies in tears
He prayed that his maker, the giver and taker, would 'pear
Junior sighed as his hands reached out to the sky
Junior cried the day that his best friend died
Yeah
They're coming home again tomorrow
I'm sorry it won't be for long
With all the pain I've watched you live within
I'll try my hardest not to cry
When it is time to say goodbye
Junior's eyes, they couldn't disguise the pain
His father was leaving, and Junior's grieving again
Innocent eyes watched the man who had gave everything
Junior's sorrow, who knew what tomorrow would bring?
Yeah
They're coming home again tomorrow
I'm sorry it won't be for long
With all the pain I've watched you live within
I'll try my hardest not to cry
When it is time to say goodbye
Junior's eyes looked into the skies once more
Now he knew well, this life was hell for sure
He desperately tried, his fingertips stretched to the stars, yeah
Reaching for reason, along with the time and the stars
Yeah
They're coming home again tomorrow
I'm sorry it won't be for long
With all the pain I've watched you live within
I'll try my hardest not to cry
When it is time to say goodbye.
I did a show with Dave Walker when he fronted Savoy Brown in the 80's -great guy-friendly and funny.
He has a bit of a James Dewar vibe I like it

Black Sabbath
From programme aired on 5th or 6th of January 1978?? Was pilot episode of BBC Midlands TV show that highlighted local music, arts and crafts. A young relatively unknown Toyah Wilcox was one of the presenters. Ozzy was ill or had left/been sacked and David Walker of Idle Race/Savoy Brown came in but short lived and Ozzy returned in time for the bands 10th Anniversary World Tour. Ozzy was on his bike again a bit later and Look Hear returned in 1979 with great local bands on like Judas Priest, Diamiond Head and QUARTZ who closed out the final episode of the first series
A melodia da voz e o instrumental da música não se completam, ainda bem que Ozzy voltou e eles transformaram essa música no que ela é hoje!
Se ele tivesse ficado no Black Sabbath a banda teria tomado um rumo diferente.
You can clearly hear that the lyrics aren't the same as it is in the record. Ozzy rewrote the song in a way that it would homage his dead father, hence the name "Junior's Eyes" and the clear references throughout the lyrics
Not Ozzy, Geezer
sonzeiraaaaaaa
Love the music behind the voice, but Dave just didn't have the Sabbath sound.
Whoa... I never heard this before or even knew that it existed. Not bad, in fact far from it, just very different.
The beginning of this version sounds MORE like the continuation of Ozzy's version where it picks up IMMEDIATELY where the other ends...
Wow I never heard this before.. very different Sabbath...
glad hey got ozzy back
it was going to be a great album
To my ears it sounds like a rehearsal rather than the finished, heavy product we all know and love so much. Perhaps it's because I'm not familiar with this version, but even so it just sounds raw and relatively unsophisticated compared to the masterpiece it was to become.
Right, which is all you can expect from a raw (probably cassette-recorded) mono version. Gotta reserve judgment without a proper multi track, produced version.
Calling the album cut a masterpiece is a stretch.

+Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus I think that this is the only recorded song from NSD that they did with Dave.
the bbc tv show had them do this and war pigs (which hasn't appeared yet).
This is far better than I expected.
Isso inspirou a fase Dio. Os riffs a voz rasgada do Walker. Olha surpreendente!!
caralho amazing
Thanks love SABBATH and savoy Brown and Fleetwood Mac
Boa gostei
How to strengthen a culture? Experiencing and suggesting possibilities; for other artists or for yourself; with ONE song. Isn't it amazing?
I actually like this.
His vocals were weak compared to Ozzy's but it's easy to see how Iommi would hire him. He's always been such a Blues fan and Walker's voice was very blues-y.
Well when you break it down, ozzy is a blues singer too
Very reminiscent of Al Atkins from Judas Priest, just a bit rawer.
Much better than anything Ozzy the song thief could do.
This is the best version of this song I've heard
+TheAdam159 Pfff!! jaja
I think you talk about the heavier guitar Sound. Vocale by ozzy are much better. ..
I agree! A very special vibe and a huge surprise. I am searching for more of this concert in 78, but can't find any other song they ve done with Walker
fantastic vocal!
I'm into this song, it's just diferent and not bad
I think this is cool AF.
DAVE WALKER!
" Where gonna shake, Wang dang Doodle, all night long!"
A Sabbath with Dave Walker would have worked. Sabbath started as a blues band and having a bluesier singer is not the mismatch some people might think it is.
Put some bottom end on this and it would be some heavy stuff.
His soulful freedom sounding voice Maybe for 1971, but not 1977. Ozzy and Dio work for sabbath dark sounding music, cause those dudes have a unique dark or haunting sound. Music is killer and it is my favorite on the never say die album.
Great voice, checkout Dave's work with Savoy Brown ❤
This version would have never worked.. ozzy coming back for this lp was epic..
😮
Yeah, this is interesting.
Die hard original Sabbath,Ozzy fan but I think this is a cool version,. I like the raw sound and the harmonica
We found the original footage. BBC Motion Gallery has the whole TV special. We're producing a film about Dave Walker. Do you have any other photos or videos of Dave?
When Ozzy was let go Dave walker played with them for a short period of time, with Dave they also performer War Pigs on BBC, Dave left Sabbath because Ozzy returned briefly then was fires for good and then Dio joined .
Dave Walker sounds a bit like Paul Rodgers here... its cool.
He would have been great for Iommi's solo run. Just like Slash has Myles Kenedy
He mostly used Glen Hughes, which worked pretty well.
