- The speedometer and tachometer is not working on my motorcyle. I want to fit my new Hugerock X70 Android tablet anyway, to get navigation and other smart solutions to be motorcycle. The instrument panel area is not that big on the Cagiva 750 Elefant, so the original instuments need to go to make room for the new.
The original instruments also holds the ignition key module and the warning indicator lights, so these needs also to be replaced and relocated.
The clutch hose and the throttle cable is also in the way, so it makes sense to reroute these first to make room for new instruments.
In other words, a lot of tasks need to be done to be able to do before it's possible to fit the Hugerock X70 tablet.

You are so right, I have already noticed some of my first repairs on this bike are now reappearing on the task list as improvement tasks 🥴😆😅
It has to be said, the Cagier has never been in safer hands. The amount of details and work you have put on this bike should grant you a free plane ticket to go see the old Ducati factory 🙌🏻 The level of OCD on the throttle cable. Absolutely love it. Can't wait to see how well the tablet work, as an old Garmin guy it is hard to try new systems, but it will try a tablet system this year as well. Amazing work once again my friend. 🙌🏻 Keep it up.
Haha, maybe I am going overboard with the details 😆 I hope this bike will last for a long time, and the effort is worth it 🤞 We better compare our systems on our upcoming trip, I am quite used to Android phones and tablet, but not experienced when it comes to using it in a motorcycle.
Can we also (one more time) just appreciate how amazingly well the 1987/88 Elephant was originally put together? Almost 40 (!) years later it is truly amazing to see how flexible and pliable this entire beast of a machine still is, on top of it being completely analog and still (basically) running like a charm! It's actually pretty ridiculous!
Also the accessibility of all the various components is super rare, folks who have been toiling away at modern bikes should know. You would be hard pressed to find a more immortal piece of machinery imho... Maybe only the '92 Africa Twin (aka Adam Riemman's 'Warhorse') comes close to this amazing bike in terms of durability and beauty.

I agree! It has really surprised me how well thought out this bike is, even though it has quite some funny quirks, it's not really the important stuff. The things that really matter are actually very solid and well thought out 🤩

What a handsome machine the Elefant is! I'm surprised it took Ducati over 30 years to bring out something similar in the Desert X. I like your use of 3D printing - very ingenious! Very neat work with the throttle cables. Once you have the engine running again, you might want to check your carb synchronisation to make sure they both open simultaneously with the new cables.

Great creativity, well done. However, I highly recommend coming up with a creative solution for ensuring that the little electric wire screw is not the only thing holding your engine throttle control together. This diy solution needs a diy failsafe..
That is a valid concern. It will be tested and I'll pay close attention to it. I might end up improving it later.

Thanks 😊 I am still not sure how to do it. I'll try to make a quick-mount solution so it's not too difficult to take it off, but at the same time make it securely attached if I just want to leave it on 🤔
Interesting. I would get the smallest TrailTech dashboard. They also make a bracket for it with indicator lights. That could probably fit on the handlebar, leaving you a good bit of space for the tablet in the fairing.

In the UK we call those wire correctors "chocolate blocks" - remarkably similar!.
Venhill sell kits for making cables, with various different ends, etc. Can be useful for obscure cables or when a longer or shorter cable is required (or in the case of a Honda NS125F I worked on - where all the available choke cables have the wrong fitment!). I would be tempted to modify where your 2 throttle cables join - to eliminate the screw and make the join smoother - the last thing you want is the screw to catch on the inside of the housing and hold the throttle on. If you need a splitter then one can be salvaged from a scrap throttle cable from a 2 stroke bike (where they split for the throttle and oil pump)
Cool, I'll remember "chocolate block" 😅 I will probably improve this solution in the future. Good to know that it's possible to get custom made cables, it's not that difficult to fabricate your own cables either by soldering on wire ends. Using this "chocolate brick" is not very professional 🥴
@@kihestad , you could replace the bolt with a grub screw, and file the ends down.
For cables I have a solder pot. Basically a heated pot of solder, and I dip the cable end and nipple into the solder pot. You can do something similar with a cooker and an old brake caliper piston.
Advantage of a place that does the components for cables is the large number of different cable nipples that they supply to cover different bikes. The Freccia clutch cable had a slightly odd end, but even then I could modify a more standard one (Freccia clutch lever perch is integrated into the l/h switchgear - despite the switchgear being the same style as yours).
As an aside, looks like someone has repaired the passing switch on your l/h switchgear - possibly using the button from the starter button on the right. Hence you can see the hollow inside the button.
Aha, I'll take a closer look at the passing high beam switch. There are so many strange custom solutions on this bike, and I am of course adding a whole lot more of them 😊
@@kihestad at a guess the switch was broken at some point and someone harvested one from other switchgear. The switchgear is common to loads of late 1980s Italian bikes.
Nice progress. I would advise painting the white 3D printed bungs you use to fill the holes on the side of the Elefant. These will turn yellow and degrade with UV light quite quickly.
You are probably right about that, the color did not fully match eiter. The paint on the frame is not very good either, and there are surface rust here and there. One day I might paint the whole frame, not this year though 😬

While it may not be a concern, there is a possible failure point in using bicycle gearing/shift cable housings (the black outer, not the steel inner) for use with a throttle.
Shift cable housings are made of parallel strands of steel wire running across the length of the housing. While this results in rigidity in terms of compression (so that bicycle gear shifting is crisp and accurate), it is only designed to withstand the forces of the springs of the bicycle's shifter and derailleur. If used for applications of higher tensile forces like braking or possibly operating 2 carburetor throttles in one, the inner cable might cut through between the steel strands of the outer housing (like someone moving the curtains open) and result in mechanical failure.
While using a gearing inner cable is fine, I suggest using bicycle brake housings as they are made of steel coils wound like a spring. This design, while "slightly squishy" in compression, ensures that the inner cable will never be able to come out despite high forces. You could also use hybrid designs like Jagwire outer housings which can be used for braking forces but are also compressionless.

The springs on the carburettors are very weak, the gearing on a bicycle is much stiffer. I doubt it will be a problem at all, but I’ll pay careful attention to it 🤞 It should not be long now before my bike is ready for an adventure trip 🤞🤞
@@kihestad That's good to hear. By the way, I noticed that you have CV dual carburetors in the Cagiva. Will you be making a video of synchronizing the carburetors via bench sync or vacuum syncing? Or does it run good enough to not warrant such an adjustment?
You can get 12mm shrink tube.
Great idea for the splitter, but by removing the barrel adjusters you no longer have an easy way of adjusting the cable tension.
Shopping 12 mm shrink sleeves right now 😊 It's very easy to adjust the cable at the bottom where it goes onto the carburetor, I don't really need it adjustable at both ends 😊
@@kihestad Look out for the shrink ratio of the tubes, the most common ones can be as low a 2:1 but also up to 4:1, that means that a 40mm tube can shrink down to 10mm. Very handy in your case. They also make fuel/solvent resistant shrink tubes, and others with adhesive on the inside of the tube, if you need a very permanent solution.
7:08 You can get it in all sorts of sizes, but what you want to look at is the shrink ratio can range from 1,5:1 to 6:1, depending on the type of heat shrink tubing used.

personally i wouldnt mess with the original trottle assembly, stuck throttle is not a pleasant thing. it can work at the moment but.. also, did painted surfaces resist the brake fluid? they often dont. i like your vids though, thanks, good luck !
It will be properly tested, a stuck throttle sounds terrible 😳 the paint came right off on the spray painted engine side cover when I spilled brake fluid on it, you can actually see my paper towel is black from the paint coming off 😞 Proper 2K paint and powder coated surfaces can tolerate a bit of brake fluid for a short while, but brake fluid is pretty strong stuff 💪

Tack!!! 🙏 Det hadde vært coolt å fått speedometer, RPM og warning-indicators inn på tableten! Min plan er å anvenda en ESP32 arduino microcontroller med hall-sensor for å lese av hastighet og varvtal, og vise det på et liten OLED display. Jeg vil da bruke mitt CTRL-MC prosjekt for dette (ua-cam.com/video/3W9Y04q-X2k/v-deo.htmlsi=cLwhWm1xdGZvSYKy). For warning indicators blir det små LED dioder, så det tar jeg separat inntil videre.
ESP32 har også bluetooth, så da er det jo mulig å sende data over til tableten. Vet ikke om det finns en app for dette, kanskje jeg må lage min egen android app 😬
