    So, let's talk about the A Swing backswing.
    Big difference from a conventional backswing.
    The big key is making sure
    that the butt of the club moves in
    while the club head stays out.
    So, hands in, club head out.
    And, this is crucial.
    We see so many golfers who just
    roll the club away going back.
    Remember, the butt of the club moves on one track.
    The head moves on another.
    This is always inside that club head.
    And, we want to try to feel that all the way to the top.
    As I do this, you can see my right arm
    stays on top of my left arm.
    The club face looks at the ball.
    No rotation of the club face.
    It actually feels slightly closed here.
    Now, as I move the club away,
    I want to feel a setting with my right wrist.
    Load that right wrist.
    And, you can see the club,
    it is still outside my hands.
    This is what I'm trying to achieve.
    It's very difficult to get it absolutely in this position,
    but the closer you get to this,
    the better because, literally,
    when I'm about halfway back,
    I want a sense of the shaft is almost matching my spine.
    Now, anywhere between here and here is fine.
    You just gotta get the club up on its end,
    sensing that, hey,
    once the club is here
    as I just complete my rotation with my body,
    you can see that's as far as I want to go.
    I want to keep my left arm under my shoulder plane.
    I want to make sure that the grip I had at address
    is still apparent.
    You can see I still have a little cup
    at the base of the left wrist and the right wrist.
    And, my left arm is actually under my shoulders.
    I want to keep this nice and short,
    but yet, the club is not far short of parallel.
    In fact, you don't have to wind up that much.
    If this is far as you can go,
    as long as the club is in balance.
    You see, the club being in this position here, folks,
    allows the club to get onto the right plane coming down.
    It's all about getting the club
    on the right plane coming down.
    That's why the backswing is so important.
    So remember, hands in,
    club out, right arm on top.
    As I set the right wrist,
    I just feel that the club head
    still stays outside my hands all the way to the top.
    It's an inverted feel. And now, at the top of the backswing, the club, if anything, points slightly to the right of the target. It's a very natural motion. If I swing the club with two fingers and a thumb, look where the club wants to get to. It's slightly across the line. Many great players throughout the history of this game have actually had the club slightly across the line at the top, rather than laid off. And, once you're here, the club has a almost... You put life into the club. It has a life of its own. It's got swing. You're putting swing into your swing from this position. A much simpler backswing, the club is traveling a much shorter route to get to the completion point. And, from here, you're in a great position now to start down. And, that back swing, very different, very simple, but very efficient.

    In the old days of tennis people took the racket straight back and straight through. Now everyone hits with top spin which means take the racket back high then drop it with a loop . The videos I sent you, the A swing , does this for a golf swing . You hit with loop and you'll become better than everyone.

    This new move is incredible and easier on my body.

    Did test it at the driving range. Result was shorter backswing with the club pointing at target. club stayed outside hands not behind body and dlast pure ball striking.

    Tried this, finally prevented my flat inside takeaway, my backswing had never looked so good. Unfortunately, this method always feels to me like my right elbow gets stuck outside my core and I lose all pre-loading in a typical Cowen 'axe drill' type swing. Was hitting a standard 7 iron 20 yards shorter. Anybody else experience this?

    • @nigelskipping7941
      @nigelskipping7941 Рік тому

      The way to get round this is to take your stance. Then without rotating your shoulders at all just pick the club up vertically so the club head is going towards your head. Do this with your hands only. Then incorporate that feeling into your normal back swing. This will set limits on how much to do this move. David Leadbetter doesn't tell your how much to do it. This move really only works for a square to square release ie no rolling of your wrists through impact. I personally don't use this method as I like to roll release through the ball.

    So the end of the grip handle never needs to point at the ball...?

    • @andrewc0128
      @andrewc0128 9 років тому

      Todd Sloan Nope. It needs to point at our right knee at the top of the swing, and at our ass in the follow through.

      Andrew C You've found your game, perhaps then....

    • @andrewc0128
      @andrewc0128 9 років тому

      Todd Sloan Probably so ;) I was just poking fun at Leadbetter for trying to make money by telling people to do things now that he had been telling them not to do for years.
      As for me, I took a lesson 1 time for grip, and that was it. Now I hover around a 10 HC and that is good enough for me.

    • @ToddSloanIAAN
      @ToddSloanIAAN 9 років тому

      Andrew C Say... did Tiger Woods lose his natural way too like Nick Faldo did?

    • @andrewc0128
      @andrewc0128 9 років тому

      Todd Sloan I'm not sure what that incredibly talented numbskull is doing, but it is probably related to the size of his bank account and an ego that doesn't fit in his brain casing. If he would put on his big boy pants and quit being so dramatic then we could probably see even better competition in golf that we do now that new players are breaking some of his records.

    Think of something else Mr Leadbetter,this is very tricky for the average golfer, not too difficult to do on the range but hard to take to the course,I play off 5 and have a tendency too get a little quick and steep in the downswing resulting in pulls and fades.This 'A' swing as you call it messed me up big time,got me all mixed up and I really worked on it for a few weeks.Found that working on lower body rotation was far more effective on advice from a local pro.
    Sorry David this is not the answer to 'over the toppers'.

    First they teach it one way, then they tell you to do something that you weren't supposed to do before. Lemme guess, next they will go back to the old way and say the classics are best. Soon after, there will be a revolutionary "B" Swing that is a tweak of the "A" Swing. Then back to the classic. Damn, there are 26 letters in the alphabet.
    We're screwed.

    Never was a big believer in Leadbetter, but this A swing has really improved my game. It works exactly as he says. It did take time for the backswing to feel normal because I would allow rotation of the club going back. My personal key is to retain the cup in the left writer THROUGHOUT the entire swing. Even though I know is flattens coming down, that thought keeps it in a better position.

    This isn't what he told Faldo though I'm sure. I think this could really ruin your short game. Just rotate your shoulders and keep your arms together on the b/swing. He is right in a way but it is over exaggerated in what he is doing. He also said in his book all those years ago that your belly button should start turning as your hands started moving. That ruined my swing for a year, that idea. I think his ideas are a bit old fashioned now. Ok, yes he got Faldo 6 majors but I'm not sure how to be honest.

    The problem with picking the club up with your hands arms as much as this is that nothing rotates your body. You don't get any hip or torso rotation and end up with a very weak backswing movement with no load or coil. Just really poor instruction for the average golfer.

    I suppose that the point of the A Swing is to get the club up on its end halfway back. It is very hard to get that shaft parallel to your spine halfway back, but trying to do so will help get it up on its end. It kind of looks like a Ryan Moore swing halfway back. I believe it is not necessary to actually get that shaft parallel to the spine halfway back, but rather this is a drill that will certainly prevent laying off, which will destroy your swing.

    I tried this for the first time yesterday with no practice on the first par 3. After warning the others this could go anywhere as I am trying a new swing, I greened the ball approximately 15 feet short of the flag. Needless to say I used the swing the rest of the day and I haven't hit such crisp iron shots in years. I used to pull very badly, 20-30 yards sometimes. Yesterday most shots were straight, and the ones I pulled were to the left side of the green or just off the green. As far as with the driver, I kept pushing the ball a bit but my trajectory improved. I was adjusting and improving and by the end of the round half were pushes and the others were fairway. The biggest improvement to me was my iron shots and hybrid/fairway woods. I highly recommend trying this swing.

    Be mindful and careful with this tip. With this takeaway concept, as the instructor says, the club is going to want to point slightly right of your target at the top. It is important you monitor that with video as you practice, so the club is not getting too exaggerated across the line. Your divots will start pointing right of your target and you will produce a massive block or sweeping hook if you are too far across the line.

  • @blackie75

    Somewhat like Rickie Fowler's backswing (?) Not sure from that upright shaft the transition would be that easy - it's way off the idea of the butt pointing to the ball - on the other hand doing that can get you beautifully into slicing every time. The key here is going to be getting the right forearm down and back onto somewhere near the address plane of the shaft before rotating the shoulders very much - quite a difficult thing to do if you are a slicer as I was for 20 years. In other words there are no quick fixes unless you go to a Leadbetter school for the week for some intensive coaching.

      +Chris Downing Hi chris...I started golfing three and half years ago..worked my way down to about a 15 handicap...tried this swing two days ago...and I don't know if it was just a fluke with trying something new...but, my irons were TONS more accurate...I've tried to figure out why this seems easier...maybe because the club is more upright coming up..it's easier to drop it into the slot and swing inside out..(not sure...I've only done it once for 18 holes)...going to really pick this thing apart!...Oh..i hit a 78 two days ago..that was after practicing this swing for only a half hour on the range....I'll post more later this week.

      You should take a look at some of Jim Waldron's videos on how the swing works if you are into learning a new way to see basics.

    Looks terrible. This will promote either a pull hook or a slice (if the club face is left open)

    What gets me about golf instruction is that well-respected teachers often have absolutely opposite claims about how to swing the club. We always hear to NEVER let the club "cross the line" at the top (even though awesome players like Nicklaus and Couples do it every time). Then DL totally says if the club crosses the line, it's okay. The reason certain humans can play golf at the pro level is nothing more than statistical inevitability; in a population of over 6 BILLION, at least 200 people will just naturally play golf better than everyone else. There's a hundred ways to swing the club.

    Although this method may seem unconventional, as a better player,who's always had a tendency to roll the forearms and get the club head behind on the way back,therefore creating an over the top,steep downswing,this helps me shallow my downswing and hit e ball on a better,more neutral flight, it does take work matching upmspeeds when its new,but then what swing changes downtown feel that way?

    David is being left behind by modern golf swing fundamentals, so of course he has to come up with something new that appeals to folks who can not make a proper back swing. It is obvious that ideally you want to keep the club in front thru the take away but the rest...well if it works for you, be it.
    One thing is true..he ruined Michelle Wie...and is a real bummer. So much for her parents being so protective of her.

    • @deannanance8843
      @deannanance8843 Рік тому

      David didn't ruin Michelle Wei. Her parents set unrealistic expectations of her winning on the PGA tour. Her injuries made it difficult to keep playing at that level and no tour player wins all the time.
      They all go through low spells where they aren't always on the leader board every tournament. That is how golf is!

    • @funkster007
      @funkster007 5 років тому

      Even GREAT players end up as instructors because they couldn't make it on the tour. To narrow it down more, only a small handful of tour players are successful. I don't really follow Leadbetter or Harmon, but they must be doing something right if they're that well known. lol
