- In 1965, a young folk singer named Mike Nesmith wrote a long fan letter to then rock star with The Modern Folk Quartet, Henry Diltz. Henry's assistant, Gary Strobl somehow SAVED that fan letter and preserved it.
In 2019 during a photo/video shoot at Nez's estate, Gary presented that 57 year old letter to Nez. This is the first time he had laid eyes on it since he wrote it all those years ago. Two of the greatest rock n' roll heroes, a little wine, a little herb and quiet reflection and conversation. I just happened to have my camera rolling when it all went down...
Working with Nez remains one of the two or three greatest highlights of my professional career, but also one of the the highlights of my personal life. Nez was a remarkable musician, fascinating writer, but an even more interesting, and better, person.
Henry was an outstanding musician for the Modern Folk Quartet before he switched careers to photography.

It's wonderful to see Nez and Henry together, telling stories. I've seen Henrys work for years and never heard him speak, what a great guy. That letter filled in a void of information for me. That Monkees audition with Nez coming in with a harmonica like he was Dylan always made me wonder what genre he was. The music I'd heard from the pre-monkees era didn't include a harmonica. Fascinating to know he wanted to remain in the folk scene, but then created country-rock when he joined the Monkees and never looked back.
Also, I couldn't help but notice the massive bird bath with the hummingbird and other birds behind them like a birders paradise. Nez had such a tranquil ranch.
If you have an opportunity, see if you can find Henry's story about gliding with Jimmy Webb.
"Come On In" would also be recorded by Peter Tork in 1968, for possible inclusion on "The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees."
