Agree, heard Them live in a small venue in Copenhagen and one of my best concerts ever, and I been to MANY. The talent is huge - a true gem

Love me some Deer Tick. The new albums are fabu! Killer band and John's one of the great songwriters of his generation. See them live, often.
I realized when lying in bed trying to fall asleep at 1:45 a.m. why I like singers like this (Deer Tick, Tallest Man On Earth), they have a scratchy and unrefined voice yet they still sing, and they don't try to refine it with electronics They don't dress up for performances, they don't put to much effort into their appearance but more into the music. They don't become famous on attractiveness or basic meaningless catchy music (although it is catchy to me). I like it because i feel like it is an escape from the fake a society I find myself where everyone is trying to be popular even if that means making their appearance different than their actual personality. I would know because I have found myself doing this and realized how miserable it was making me. I think that should make sense, I'm tired so I can't tell.

You should listen to some, you might like Mountain Goats. It's a one-man project, a lot of it just he and acoustic, some accompanied by stripped-down bands, newer stuff with larger ensembles..... This is just a sketch, he's been putting out records since the early '90's, he's recorded a shitload of records, and I haven't heard them all. The early ones - Transmissions to Horace, Zopilote Machine, All Hail West Texas, Sweden are all great - were recorded on a boombox, so they are lo-fi.
I'd suggest you start with Tallahassee and We Shall All Be Healed, which I think are the first records done in a studio, although neither are polished-sounding. Great songwriter. Cheers.

The style of vocals is an unspoken key part of alt country. You see it in other bands like Richmond Fontaine, Wilco, Silver Jews, etc. It’s a raw, untainted delivery combined with raw emotional music that can only be found in Alt Country. That’s why I love this shit so much.
Discovered this band yesterday.. hasn't heard anything else since.

Taylor Mac made Yankee doodle fashionable with the help of drag fashion artist Machine. This is a great set. John played Jules mays in Georgetown Seattle in 2007 or some such. Maybe someone has video.
What an excellent band, one of my favorites I've discovered the last few years.
On another note, why does it seem like there are so many lefty bassists in bands? I play left-handed so look out for it more than most people probably do, but it's just funny/interesting there seems to be a high percentage of lefty bassists.
