I’m in love with that Manta.
Definitely, going to be a peach of a car on completion!!!!!! Them older manta notorious for crumbling away!!!!!!! Top welding 👍🏾
I guess this is why people say when you see rust, you only see 10% of that. That car looked almost rust free with a few bubbles. however as you started cutting my jaw dropped at the amount of hidden rust that revealed itself. It is so fascinating watching you guys tackle these jobs. you make it look easy. can't wait for more videos.
im about to do rust repair on a 1964 Opel Kadett. it's very rusty and i have been too afraid to start. but your videos have helped me repair rust on my daily driver and i feel like im confident i can do the work on my classic project car. If i mess up i can always do it again haha 😅
Glad the videos helped :) That's the attitude you need :) it's only metal if it dosnt work cut it out and try again :)
Happy to see you start with this one, I really like old 60/70s Opels, so im going to enjoy to watch the progress. 👍🙂
@@JoakimWahlin I'm going to enjoy doing it :)
I had an identical car in the early 80s... An auto. I can remember the registration but it was two digits and R reg... Didn't keep it long as I couldn't sell my previous car... I was young in those days.
Possibly my favourite car of all time, I am going to enjoy watching this restoration
your channel is addictive - i cant get enough of the MA build so I'm starting again here. Love the manta what a little beast
If you're going to do it do right this is a masterclass thank you.
Had the cavalier sports hatch as my first car, went quite well with its 2 litre engine and four speed gearbox, very easy to drive, great fun!
Respect for what are you doing
Es ist immer gut zu sehen wenn Menschen Ihren Beruf lieben und eine hervorragende arbeit abgeben
Love the open manta including the manta A
for a 45 year old vauxhall it was nice to see lots or real metal still present,if it was a ford you would have had to start up at the roof and work down, nice work by the way
thank you Dave :)
Any Manta guy could see where this was going....no surprises when you opened up the sill area. We've all been there. Fortunately my rear arches were surprisingly good, just the lower 2-3 inches where the mudflap had been.
Stunning cars tho & 75 to 79 chrome bumper ones far nicer than the later ones....also had thicker steel I believe but still didn't stop the rot in all the usual Manta/Ascona/Cav places.
That's an early one with the shrouded headlights....same as mine but in orange. Mine was bright yellow, or as Opel called it Brilliant Ochre. Always toyed with changing the colour to the Orange as it reminded me of a neighbours one when I was a kid
They certainly knew how to make beautiful cars then.i see fantastic filler again.great work steve😊😊
I always wanted one of these cars back in the day. Love the style of them
Great videos on the manta I've enjoyed seeing how it's done
Thank you.
Very looked after example of Manta despite of all. 4:26 protecting windows from sparks is very important when approaching car with angle grinder👍 Now days I take thick filler off with heat gun to avoid dust.
May try that. Iv always just got dusty and tbh it's very satisfying haha
It’s all in the preparation proper job👍
And there is a lot of preparation Richard :)
Fantastic again Steve, and what looked to be such a tidy car an all!!....💪
Learning so much. Keep seeing the mistakes I have made, looking forward to correcting my mistakes. Brilliant as ever, love the car.
It’s a little surprise box 📦 but really nice job you made 😊
Thank you :)
quality of the resto work seems to be matched by the quality of the production & editing of the videos themselves, big thumbs up to whomever's responsible for those
Thank you :) same person you see doing the work also dose the filming, editing and choosing music etc and on this video tha was me Steve :)
Such a stylish car. I had a cavalier coupe in jamaican yellow. A car I certainly wish I'd held on to.
Excellent, I love & admire your content
I used to do bodywork 31 years ago at Lessarna Court Bradford, things have completely changed from my days of body repair, especially the material prices
Brings back memories watching your videos
Keep up the good work
All the best
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks so much for sharing, Steve, This is the first video series I've seen showing an inner wheel arch repair. You've given me the confidence to tackle my 1978 VX 490 wheel arches. Absolutely brilliant.Thank you!
Love the VX490. I’ve a memory of a very cool driving friend frightening the life out of three teenage passengers by high speed driving through the lanes in rural Hampshire. He was occasionally using the banks to force the car to turn, that & plenty of flicked opposite lock, engine roaring.
I was one of those passengers. It was the early 1980s. The car was grey, I think, and had been modified.
I had a 1980 Vauxhall Cavalier 2.0 GT with an Opel flat black 2ltr engine it was awesome drove like it was on rails.
It is a nice drive :)
Thanks Steve, awesome learning experience great method I'm loving the knowledge.
Loving the videos.
Found myself looking at old cars when I see them and thinking how much rust they’re hiding behind the paintwork.
thank you Tony , haha i do the same :)
only some cars starting from late 1985 are rust free
Finally a restauration of a europese icon. I pressed the right buttons and I am gonna enjoy your project.
Good work ! Great to see it being restored ! 👍☘ Hard to beat the salt on the roads !
Good work there, why not use one of those lovely two poster ramps? Very thorough work excellent 👍👍
Thank you David :) we don't use the ramps for the long restorations as those are for keeping the company running and if we put any of the restorations on it would tie that ramp up for months and that ramp then couldn't make money. I don't mind sitting on the floor to restor it :)
My mate wildman had a 1967 opal manta back in the 80s that had wing damage filled with a choc-dip pot & sweet shop bag paper Mashe. Quick rub down & a squirt of primer; Sorted. I've gotta say - that's a right proper job you did there though. Quality.
Thank you.
I owned an example as a 21 year old. USM 662T. Even when it was just six years old it had rust issues in the sills and inner wings. Sadly corrosion protection in the 70’s was not as good as it should have been. Lovely cars though especially in Berlinetta trim.
You do a very thorough job YCR. I'm impressed.
Thank you Nigel :)
It's great to see such painstaking attention to detail - I've subscribed to this chanel as I follow Mat Armstrong and I can honestly see why he picked you guys to fix his BMW - fantastic content guys, looking forward to seeing more - plus it's always good to see stuff from Yorkshire!
I have a Calibra which came after the Manta, looks very, very similar steel build and the wheel arches and front jacking points are the worst. A guy I knew sold a Manta in the 80's, he covered newspaper with filler and put it in the drivers footwell, then glued the carpet down. When he was selling it the buyer tried to lift the carpet to check for rust - but couldn't - absolute pepper pot Manta's were.
Thanks for the video guys. Looks like it's going to be a project.
It's amazing how computers have completely changed cars. The fit of all the body panels of 1970 era cars is night and day from even the most pedestrian Chinese units being produced today.
Recently I saw a very beautiful Opel Calibra. Unfortunately rust is a very big issue with old Opels….
Fantastic work! Mine's starting to go where it rear arches ends. Thankfully it only sees dry weather and shows. Chassis rails/legs are a key area to corrode. Repaired mine a few years ago now.
Rare cars now! Keep up the good work ❤❤
Great work! I love to watch your videos! 🙏🏼
You guys are like champions at rust hide and seek, that car looked pretty good apart from a few bubbles it just shows how much hides or gets covered over
Such a beautiful car!
Great work as always Steve 👍👍
Some pickup in your subs. Beautiful car. Superb work. A nice way to relax after an evening in the shed is watching someone else in their shed who actually know what they’re doing! Keep the content coming lads!!
Man,, that I one sweet motor, dream machine ❤ great video and fantastic work.
A Berlinetta/SR. That was the most expensive one, well done!
Another great job at keeping classics on the road.
Blimey fella's garage is filling up with lovely classics! Proper job!
show me the trooper in the background!! As lovely as the Opel is, Isuzu have a special place in my heart. 😊
I remember gaping holes in the sills of my dads 7 year old Viva HB so nothing surprises me with old Vauxhall / Opel cars!
We shouldn't be but we still get surprised sometimes :)
Top content yet again. Loving your updates, showing me how to do it properly.
Just found your channel, and subscribed, enjoyed this video and will be working my way through the others, don't own any classics now, but still love them, now retired so got plenty of time to watch your videos
Thank you!
There's so much work involved in just doing what seems like easy to fix because once you get into it there's a lot more of underlining rust you guys are the best I'm learning so much from your videos I'm just forever grateful 🙏 to you guys for all your hard work and knowledge you are letting us in and see on your channel ❤️ I just absolutely love this channel my favorite because I love working on cars especially when it comes to the structural aspects of it I love seeing how things are made and constructed..
Thank you David for the kind words it is much appreciated :)
Looked like a beautiful car and then the reality kicked in when you started work on it and so much filler! Nice to see that it’s getting fixed properly and it’ll keep the Manta in good stead for years to come! 😊
Gahhh the rust never ends!
it never dose :)
Is it all really worth it! :) 70's cars are diseased with rust to the core. It will come through again as the build quality and metal quality was dreadful back then. I can see the passion though what you do. Best never to take in the rain when done and keep in a heated garage for shows only.
Of corse it's worth it :)
Beautiful car! Nice to see it in your shop Steve, you’ll fix her right!
Thank you Mark :)
Steve, you’re the cleanest freehand cutter with the cut off wheel I’ve ever seen. By far. How do you do it? These discs can wander easily enough, but your cuts look to be exactly where you intended them, and they even join up with cuts already made 😊
Being a Manta owner (albeit a '84 GT/E) this all looks very familiar 😄. Wonder what the front chassis legs are like?
Finally! I always saw this car in the background of your other videos and was wondering why it is in the shop, because it looked perfectly restored already. I really love these old Mantas. Greetings from Germany
This car or model I think is a nice drive
Love the timeless shape of the manta
This is how it should be done ! Top notch work and Superb car. you do manage to find some rare beasts !
I recommend also the video from Halle 76 where there was a Manta worked on and a MK 1b Ford capri
Amazing work Steve as always!
thank you Eddie and thank you for your continued support :)
A top tip for removing body filler much faster if you find a dodgy repair. A blow torch and a scraper
Ive always been a Ford guy but that Manta is nice.
If you see thick layers of Bondo then you dig further. After a while, you find the coffin. If you open it you find tons of wet rust, mostly deep black.
Dig it up, collect it, and bring it to a local blast furnace. They make iron for you again.
Cost an arm and a leg, but you got something.
Hi Steve ( or is that Dusty , new name ) I see you've taken on and opened another can of rust worms , looking forwards to more content on the opal ....😅😂😅😂😅
Open content should be every few weeks till its done :)
Great video and great car your workmanship is first class
You only get one set of lungs. Get some serious dust collection kit if you are going to take body filler off that way.
Easier said than done you soon get immersed in your work
I don’t know, particularly from what was said about the strange body profile, you know what’s going to be under that shiny orange paint and you know you’re going to need the proper mask!
Yeah a full cover mask would be better.
Such a beautiful car. Please give it the love it deserves. I really admire your work! Also take of your knees! Some padding would go a long way towards comfort and preventing pain/injury.
10,000 subs in a week well done guys, also the Manta is stunning
That takes me back , Back in the early 80s I had a Manta as a company car , I tried to buy it off the company when I left , fortunately the bank said no - you're doing it right as usual guys excellent work as ever - and am I seeing things or has your subscriber count jumped from 20K to 30K in a week or so ! = Matt and the BMW?
What a great job you guys have, i wish i had time and place to do this work. I love working on cars, my car Audi A4 from 2004 2.0 need some attention but I don't have a garage or space to do it..
In Australia, Copper Weld Thru Primer is used in repairs like this.
wow what a looker steve ( the car not you) we never got these in australia shame about all the filler in the rear quater panels
Same problem were on my dads 1989 Opel Omega A
Hi Steve. More normal on an Opel than on a Porshe or BMW, even if Opel invented the slogan "Deutsche Qualität" hehehe
Oh I would have loved that car back in the day. I really wanted the GTE in white back in the 80s, a company I worked for had one and I got to drive it the once and felt like a king. Sadly in those days the wallet wouldn’t stretch to one and I bet now it probably wouldn’t as well.
Are you the company in Bradford?
Brilliant
A wonderfull car! 🥺
Subscribed. Greetings from Derbyshire, lovely car but poor previous repair judging by the ammount of filler and underseal. Surprised at the view down from inside the car... 😮
i love opel manta and ascona b
Signs of yet another car built in its day, to a price and not to a standard. They rust and rot, though you wouldn't think so looking at this one. I had two in the '80's and somehow I'm glad I don't now.
Nice car and great job 👍👌👏 congratulations!
Sure this is one off bangers and cash was two manta, on and this was least featured one will be real nice car when done!
No offense, but I've watched your channel for over a year and have never seen a car completed. What's the purpose of your channel, just to display your awesome talent? If so, you've accomplished that many times over. I don't know about other viewers, but I enjoy watching start-to-finish projects. To date, I haven't seen any projects finished! And lastly, the "Disaster Datsun". Unless this project is just a learning experience, I can't see how this project could ever be profitable. New garage, new equipment, something's got to be paying for this. Will I ever see one of your projects completed?
No offence taken and we shouldn't have to explain but the garage turns out about 2 to 3 cars a week. Usually smaller projects or projects we have already started and are quite a way through, so pointless showing you them. Also we don't show everything we do only the larger more interesting cars and they are usually here for a longer period.
Red BMW e24 - only been here a few months and has weeks left.
Porsche 911 - only been here a few months and has turned in a a much bigger job so a few.months left there.
Datsun our car and is going to take years
Lj80 our car - we have been doing it over 2 years and is going to prolly take another 6 months.
Rx4 my car - I do it when I can no rush we are just too busy atm.
Blue mx5 with metal side skirts - my car and I'm too busy atm
So maybe you need to be a little more patient we do these videos and the work in our own spare time so they aren't going to be weeks as we both also have full time Jobs.
Thabk you for your time.
@@yorkshirecarrestoration thanks Steve 🇬🇧
@@yorkshirecarrestoration dont pay no mind Steve, project Binky has around 7 years and is not finished yet. People sometimes forget you run a business and have customer cars that have to be done too. Greetings from Argentina.
waiting for the next video
This channel will grow well, good content, quality work and lads with good character.I've watched enough car channels to bet money on it. Go hard fellas. =)
Shocking in the end what you guys found in that one.
Yes there was more filler than I thought haha
A lot of filler indeed, but even with the rust hidden in the inner sill it's nowhere near as bad as the Disaster... impressed that you can still get panels for it.
The car is from the 70s and has much less rust than a 2010s Miata...😢😢😢😢
I did one of these before - exact same chrome arch trims - except the last chap at them had re-rivetted the trims on using what must have been the worlds crappiest rivet gun - every rivet had the steel center pin broken off proud, meaning drilling them was impossible. I had to carefully grind off every rivet head, an absolute pita not to hit the chrome.. got the rivets all ground off & the git had epoxy-resin glued them as well. :-)
Bad words were uttered... was every bit as rusted as this one too - them earlier Opels do like to rot.. Those look to be Magnum arch panels - I'm a Fan of those, they go on very well in my experience. The sills not so much.. :-) I tacked one of them arch panels on once, a full 3/4 inch too far back - not paying attention... I had to grind every tack back off to move it - never did that boo-boo again, I now make a big clear "correct center" mark before I mark anything else - Lesson learnt.
Iv done that once as well and yep never did the same thing again, learned my lesson very early :)
@@yorkshirecarrestoration You probably had about 80% of the "tacks" done too... I know I did.. Sweet Lord, there was about 2 inches of unwelded panel left to "tack". It was on like a bit of the Forth Bridge.. "Ah FFS like!" :-)
That looks like a 1980s style restoration. I seen cars from the 70s restored in the 80s having quarter panels looking just like that.
It's more of a "repair" job than a restoration. And most of them were done on the premise that the car would get wrecked or junked before the quality of the work started to show its shortcomings.
There is a lot of grunt in that arch !!
I don’t think I saw this one in person but have seen it in other videos - Good start Steve - I think this is going to be interesting on the sills/jacking points - is it the big white one soon!
A another great video 📹. Good to see someone keeping these old classics on the the road . What's your thoughts on but welding should you leave a 2mm gap so there's plenty of weld left when it's ground right back .I have 2 full repair sills to put on my transit connect any imput would be appreciated appreciated thanks
What seems to the customer a small bubble can turn into a nightmare !!!! years off repairs and people wanting the cheapest option. Working on a DB7 for the few days and typical make it look pretty without getting involved 😩. I do what the A hole wants ( frustrating).
The ads for classic cars are full of statements like "rust free", and "Never had any work done to it, and won't need any either!". Yeah... I've been around 60s-80s cars enough to know already, that it's always a load of BS. I've done a Manta B for myself, on a rotisserie. And I can say that the rear arch area here, isn't even the most hidden place to have rust on these. I'd have a look at the chassis legs too. Might look fine on the outside, but poke them a bit with the screwdriver... Although I'm sure, it's no news for the guy doing the work in this video!
We do inspect the cars before hand :) the guys in the video are us, me ( Steve) and Ryan do everything from filming and editing to social media and sales. We also have full time Jobs :)
@@yorkshirecarrestoration And looks like you're doing a good job of it. There's never too much of this, 'hands on' restoration footage online.👍
@@kukko83 thank you :)
