I was just thinking the same as I listened to this song again after many years. My guess is that even guitar greats like Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page were impressed with this.
Everyone one of them are special, the were never the same compositions as he wrote spontaneously in his head. Ncle Frank was the greatest, i saw him over 35 times in NYC.
I think out of all the drummers, Ansley is one of my favorites. His drumming on BTM (Playground Psychotics) is really good. Especially about min 22 with the keyboard solo. Drums start quiet and slowly build to some awesome playing.
"Open up your pocketbook, Get another quarter out, Drop it in the meter, mama And try me on for size". A complex sung riff! Zappa: Rara Avis. Innovator. God save the King!
Man It's been a while since I really watched this. It's was really influential on my playing, I was able to figure out how to play the riff and i don't know how its absurdly tricky, man now I'm digging into some gems, gonna have to watch live in Pompeii next
Fuckin' amazing. Zappa was never one to stick to conventional rudiments, and it shows in his solos. Threes, fives and sevens instead of quarters, eighths and sixteenths? Mind blowing!
@Benedetti08, that's Aynsley (Sly) Dunbar, later with Journey. The Mothers of Invention were a proving ground for three generations of musicians who cut their teeth and honed their chops in the arena that is Zappa music.
@Jethrofinger I agree. I'd love to actually see a transfer of the actual videotape instead of a videotape of a telecine of a theatrical print (ahem... Tony Palmer... Voiceprint DVD...). In the very least, they should make a fresh transfer from the original 35mm negative, which apparently was used to strike new positives when the film was re-released in theatres in 2009 or so.
Been a-rollin' on the bed since the show got out Now I'm gettin' weak in the knees Must have did it eighty, ninety times It might have been a hundred But you're the kind of girl that I really wanna please You're the kind of girl that I really wanna please
@MrMariodave Actually, that might not be true (it's definitely not confirmed), but then again, Tony Palmer lied about owning the original tapes. When this movie was out on DVD, a sticker claimed it came from those tapes, but that was also false, so this isn't proving the tapes are still around either. I did find out that the movie is out on Netflix, and it looks and sounds like a really high quality transfer from what might have been the original 35mm interpositive.
I wish for a authentic DVD is released someday. I have the DVD that was released last year. I like that its not a boot but it looks worse than a boot. 200 Motels turns 40 this year so c'mon Gail! I know she wants it out.
I love FZ, and I'm a diehard Flo and Eddie fan/quasi-groupie, but let's not pretend that Led Zeppelin was deficient in any way. Truly one of rock's greatest bands. Just read what commenters say in UA-cam clips of LZ videos. Compare this to what comments say about the Beatles, where what's defended is not the quality of the music, but Beatlemania itself.
@PicnicHikeMusic Flo and Eddie are music geniuses unto themselves. White soul up there with Cocker himself. Hey, why don't you go listen to your BEATLES records or some such smaltz, maybe some early TURTLES or something? Flo and Eddie are two of the most powerful falsetto vibratos ever. Unfortunately for you there are no Zappa hate sites, so you won't make friends with these blasphemous comments you leave here.
Martin Lickert is on bass (though he might just be miming Jeff Simmons' parts, Jeff left the band just before filming) and FZ on rhythm and lead guitar.
@@synthonaplinth5980 ~ Ian Underwood possibly played rhythm guitar, though he's not on camera to prove this either way. I think it's him because he is a multi-instrumentalist; George Duke played electric piano in this phase of the band, and there is no sax or second keyboard in this performance. The band and orchestra were recorded live, though some of Martin Lickert's parts were re-recorded by FZ, so it's entirely possible Underwood played that part. I could be completely wrong, but the process of elimination leads to him.
I was pretty fucked up on acid when I first saw 200 motels. That's when I went from piano to guitar. It was great...or maybe not. Although I did use the footage in a high school project...The teacher wasn't pleased. Hey I got a C -, it'd say that's a win.
I’VE BEEN IN THE BAND FOR YEARS, AND I KNOW HE’S ALWAYS LISTENING.
That’s exactly what he does.
...still does.
Its also one of Franks best ever guitar solos! Beautifully contructed from start to finish 'no overdubs', Lets be honest its breathtaking stuff!!
@Mouse Fitzgerald it sounds like a kiss song a couple years before kiss existed...hmm
I was just thinking the same as I listened to this song again after many years. My guess is that even guitar greats like Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page were impressed with this.
It’s definitely my second favorite guitar solo besides Jimi’s “Bold as Love” solo.
Ringo should've gotten an Oscar for this.
And not Keith Moon?
and not Zappa
two oscars...
this is probably one of the five most awesome songs that radio never cared about. I feel blessed to be one who loves it
What are the other 4?

This song kicks ass!!!!
Everyone one of them are special, the were never the same compositions as he wrote spontaneously in his head. Ncle Frank was the greatest, i saw him over 35 times in NYC.
Best song from this album/film. This is a perfect parody of rock music, and it does the job better than most examples of its target. Sublime.
For me this is one of FZ's very best recorded solos. It's SO organic! Interesting that it's pretty much the only appearance he makes in the movie.
You can also see him playing drums in lonesome cowboy burt
If you mean studio recorded then yes, you could be right.
@Zolar Czakl The only exception would have been that the bass parts were overdubbed as they were too difficult for Martin Lickert.
Flo & Eddie at their peak with FZ’s magnificent lead guitar.
Just blows you away
The 3 of them together were seriously something special. The beautiful vocal harmonies, crazy jokes, and kick ass guitar. Zappa in his prime
One of my favorite Zappa solos
so melodic!
And, a great example of Ansley Dunbar’s brilliant drumming.
That’s terry bozzio

Oh, it's not Black Tits Matter (BTM) it's Billy The Mountain.
Just a Perfect song, from Ansley drumming. Flo n Eddie vocals and the tone of Zappas guitar. Perfection 🎶

This is the best tune Flo & Eddie did with Zappa - filthy rock n roll at it finest. Delightful guitar spewage from FZ.

Six years later, that same drummer will be playing "Wheel In the Sky" in a Journey video!
It's the first time I hear this FZ'solo. As usual, I am impressed!
Great fun- great tune!
Perfection, loved it since i was 10 :)
Franks use of the wah wah is truly masterful.
You mean Frank's use of not using it or rather, setting it in one position then walking away from the Wah-Wah pedal.... (aka the "cocked-Wah"...)
@@Jah_Rastafari_ORIGthat's the thing about pedals, they're kinda a pain in the ass when you're in the zone
One other (unrelated) thing to add-- to the guy who posted this video-- why did you cut it off right before the best part??
Even people who don’t like Zappa’s stuff with Flo and Eddie HAVE to love Magic Fingers
You're perfectly right! The period that I love the less of Zappa's music is the one with Flo and Eddie, but this song... it's mind-blowing
