  • The Transcontinental Airway System was created in 1924 to aid nighttime airmail flights across the United States. These brightly colored yellow arrows were accompanied by a tower and bright light to signal pilots which direction to fly along their route. With the advent of radio navigation, this national system was obsolete and with the coming of Word War II, most towers were dismantled for scrap and arrows destroyed to prevent invading air forces from navigating our country.
This arrow was #13 along the Los Angeles to Las Vegas route and is still visible from the freeway if you know where to look.

Are there any more arrows in southern California? Were you able to travel up to this arrow?
