  • We recently had an AC failure following a power outage/spike at the campground. Once home, our troubleshooting showed that the compressor and fan capacitors were good. We were showing 125 volts between hot and ground at all proper locations. Continued troubleshooting led me to a potential problem on the neutral wire side.
There is a junction box under the camper for the AC supply line. This had obviously been slowly failing over time to the point that the wire nuts melted. The final straw came with the power outage/surge.
All Trailmanor owners should have this junction box wiring inspected! It is a failure point and can have water egress from both the top and bottom.

Cool air! Woot! Excellent find. Excellent repair. So glad you worked it out! I did not see any burn marks in the box that would indicate that the spike went to ground. And, one of the two nubs of burned wire is stranded and the other is solid core. This combination is known to make a A) poor connection and B) one that will work loose. IIRC, a different connector is needed, when there are different types of wire. However, I am not throwing any stones for doing what you have to do to get the air running asap. Good job. Atta-boy.

Thanks. Yep, there are better options than wire nuts. However, there are several techniques to make a solid and strand wire work together. Also, just doing a firm pull test afterwards helps to confirm that all is well. Also, thanks for your input while I was hunting the answer to this problem! :)

Boss, is there such thing as a power surge protector for RVs?

Yes there is. Both 30 & 50 amp models, plug in type and hard-wired models. Some work better than others!
