You're an outdoors man I would have thought beards were part of the regalia.... On a different note, could it be possible for next season's wasp season to do a time lapse video of a queen building a nest?.
Firstly, the beard looks great on you! Grow it out, keep it trim and you’ll be fine! Secondly, all of your 2023 videos were not only informative … they were educational and helpful. My husband and I have honey bees, yet learned more from you than what we thought we already knew. Now that we are moving into a colder season - we want to be fully prepared for whatever the colder weather brings in terms of mice in our pole barn. We also want to be better prepared for the 2024 season and are looking forward to ordering your products in advance. Thirdly, I will never second guess myself when it comes to what lies beneath my feet nor what a golf hole looks like compared to an underground wasp nest!Ha! Lastly, thank you for all of your great videos! We appreciate you, Shawn! Have a great Autumn season.
You should definitely grow the beard out! I really enjoyed these videos on how to deal with hornets/yellowjackets. Hopefully there will be more to come next summer!
Really neat to see how different the nests are when it gets colder. If you left an abandoned nest up there until the spring, is there a risk of the next generation of yellowjackets colonizing it?
Always great to see someone let their beard show itself for the first time. Looks promising for a week, but we'll need about three months without shaving to see what it will really do, so absolutely keep it going. And some great advice for a new grower is to not neglect beard wash and oil. That hair and skin isn't like anything else on your body, and it wants its own care. Best of luck with it, Shawn!
Really interesting about the wasps. I always wondered how they restart the next year, when the colony seems to die in the winter. Just got back from camping in the forests of central/eastern canada, where last year there was a literal plague of mice. They got into my car, any food left unattended for just a few minutes, even running across the picnic table while we were eating. This year not even one. Not sure what came in, but my guess would be coyotes, foxes or owls, or a combination of them, because it’s really completely cleared out.
@@spicesmuggler2452 Yeah they could have contributed, but there aren’t tons around up here, and I doubt they would have literally wiped out an over population
I've been stung a time or two before, never dealt with a nest of whatever, but I'm still scared silly of stingers swarming me. I'm impressed with your bravery. Thank goodness there is somebody that will take care of these things. So where do the queens go for the winter?
Sean, it’s your face, do what you want. It does look a little scruffy now but give it a couple weeks and see what it looks like. If you’re like me, you’ll have to get the Wife to approve. Looking forward to getting back to more mouse trap videos. Keep up the good work. Mike from Montreal.
During winter, I often find queen yellow jackets and bald face hornets in my firewood. I'll bring in an armload of wood, the hornet will warm up and start flying around.
A great video, Mr. W. Thanks for sharing. BTW, do you have any theories as to why two nests would be dormant and one have lethargic bees, but the third nest of hornets still active and threatening? Thank you for your response.
Loved your channel for years. We have a serious Chipmunk infestation and wonder your best advice to eradicate these pests? We catch dozens of mice with 5 gallon spinning traps and water BUT Chipmunks not so much? Need some advice for traps / bait you'd recommend? Thanks Dean
Shawn, the Hornet King, just did a video in which he explains the life cycle of a hornet colony. The hornets don't die from the cold, the queen dies this time of the year, and the whole colony collapses. If you haven't seen it, make sure you do. There was a lot of information, and I learned a lot. BTW...keep the beard it makes you look your age.
I watched that video and his points were pretty self-contradictory. - What about wasp, bee, or other insect species whose queens live for multiple years? They still become inactive in the winter. Surely it can't be pure coincidence? No, obviously it's because of the cold. - If it's not the cold, and you took a nest to the Southern Hemisphere, would they continue to be active in April to September? Of course not; it's winter then. The wasps would either die out, or adjust to the new seasons over some time. - The Hornet King himself puts bagged nests in the fridge, which puts them into a dormant state if not outright killing them. If it's not the cold that determines the life cycle, why does that work?
@@grafzeppelin4069 if I lock you in a freezer, won't you eventually begin to hibernate and then die? He specifically mentioned that the queen either dies or is killed when she no longer lays eggs. And much like a human female, she only has a number of eggs. Honeybees make honey in order to fuel the hive overwinter. Wasps and hornets are carnivores. If there is not a sufficient supply of food insects, the hive can't continue even if the queen kept laying.
@HornetKingOfficial Sorry, I didn't reply to his comment, I don't argue on the internet. It usually doesn't matter anyway, and everyone is entitled to their opinion. I think he is lumping bees and wasps together, and they are two entirely different insects.
So what is the best time to put traps out in the spring to keep em under control when the queen tries to start the new nest? Like temp range when the queen starts a nest? And no beard.
On the second nest, the new queens are already gone and settled in for hibernation, and the workers have all died. The hornets still in the nest are all male drones. They try to sting, but they’re equipped with male parts instead of stingers.
I had a nest in a large 30' pine that I had planned to remove in the winter here in central Ohio. Luckily a squirrel had moved in and it collapsed during a big rain storm so no effort was needed. I was thinking a shotgun with birdshot may have removed the dead nest early but was curious if others think this would have been a solution,. It was very high in a soft branched tree and very hard to access
Beard looks good man, questionabout the suit, i have a bee suit, but i just started in honeybees, is you suit thicker that a normal suit, thank you sir.
rodents and roaches, too. altho the bayer roach poison must be working--the only ones i see are dying or dead. grandson said i may have 100,000 in the floorspace--that's where the live ones are.
The beard is your call to make, as it's your face, and it hasn't grown in enough to rate one way or the other. I normally keep mine trimmed close to the face, but my wife likes a thicker fuller beard, so in recent times I grow it more for her benefit. Your for sure an outdoor type guy, so honestly I'm shocked you haven't had a full beard before now. LOL
Could be yellowjacket, hornet, type of paper wasp? But with the huge euro-hornet, I've had some trouble, considering it sounds like a loud hummingbird[almost as big😅] and its the only time ive bled from any sting type..yeh God plz dont save that queen! I ended up making a trap the next spring to try and capture her. I got her the year after and some of her pals. She was a good 3+ inches long, id rather deal with snakes or spiders than some of these winged devils flying all around😬

I really like your beard, it shows you are a tough guy who deals problems with ease :)
Beards are good keep it over winter then maybe shave near summer.
You're an outdoors man I would have thought beards were part of the regalia....

HE DEFINITELY SHOULD!!!!!!
Winter fur!
@@thandornet 😆.
Please don’t!
Grow it out. Love it. I Didn't grow mine until I 50.
I would have removed nest #3 with my 12-ga...
Grow the beard. I've had mine since getting out of the Army 53 years ago!
Looking good Shawn, nothing wrong with a little face fuzz!😄
You should definitely grow the beard out! I really enjoyed these videos on how to deal with hornets/yellowjackets. Hopefully there will be more to come next summer!
A nice winter grown beard would be interesting to see, but it's the knowledge and courage you have that keeps us intrigued.
Really neat to see how different the nests are when it gets colder. If you left an abandoned nest up there until the spring, is there a risk of the next generation of yellowjackets colonizing it?
Yup keep the beard
At least for winter
I like the beard!
Anyone who is an expert with wood-craft, (outdoor stuff) should have a beard.

The fertilized queens usually burrow into rotting wood on the ground. I've found them in winter under rotting logs when looking for salamanders.
@shawnwoods What was the outside temp and time of day for this eradication? Thanks for the vids btw, love em all
The beard works for you brother! Keep it
I collect the nests in the fall and winter snd hang them on the deer antlers in my garage. They are beautiful
YOOOO YOU SHOULD HAVE SAVED THE QUEEN AND LET IT SET UP A NEST SOMEWHERE YOU CAN RECORD!
you gotta let it grow out Shawn, anyone wanting you to shaved off just don't like men to be men! LOL
Keep the beard, brother!
Gave that one hornet a little flip😁
I bought one of the dizzy dunkers, it caught three mice at my house and two at my buddy's house
He looks better with the beard
Don't we all
Shawn always give the best alternatives and insight on situations. Till next season!
4:33 "I'm not even worried about being stung." Reacts and waves his hand at a flying baldface hornet. HA! I had a good laugh at that!
Absolutely keep the beard. Makes you look wise.
I vote for growing out the beard! Awesome video as always.
the beard will be great
for winter …keep it Shawn .
As always, we enjoy your content. Beard looks good, every man should grow one at least once
4:22 " I wonder if that's the queen!"

Love the beard!
Great insight on why they’re not so active. As usual I appreciate you and your content. Thank you!
Love the beard--definitely keep it!
Love the beard! I would like it if you let it grow all winter.

Beard looks great. Just keep it trim.
That was very good ,and full of information….thanks for the coverage!….
Like the video, love the beard Shawn! 👍
I’m Pro-Beard, but it’s your face! My husband has said his keeps his face warm in the winter, so you picked the right time of year to experiment.
We used to get paper wasps nests every year
A great video, Mr. W. Thanks for sharing.
BTW, do you have any theories as to why two nests would be dormant and one have lethargic bees, but the third nest of hornets still active and threatening? Thank you for your response.
does smoke calm hornets and yellow jackets the way that it does for honey bees?
Excellent vid, how’s your mouse trap doing, great trap, hope they are selling well
Loved your channel for years.

No shave November head start. Clean shave for spring.
Great video and great beard😆
It was a pleasure following you through this hornet season. I look forward to seeing more mouse traps at work.
Go for the beard !!!❤

Real men wear beards.
No.
Nice beard Shawn!

The way they are moving around makes them look so exhausted and depressed.
Love how informative and wholesome this channel always is. =)
It makes sense that the guy who destroys bald-faced hornet nests should not have a bald face.
Or wears a yellow jacket 🤣🤣
My barber displays about 18 hornet's nests he's found himself. Kinda cool, but I can't help but looking at the hole to make sure none are coming out!!

Great job Shawn! See you next spring sir! Tom H.

Grow the beard .👍👍❤..great video. Keep um coming. Ready for some mouse traps..
Also definitely grow the beard im excited to see
Love the beard
Beard! Beard! But I guess that the kids will say the last word.
Them are some beautiful nest
Shawn, it’s rainy and cold so flowers and sugar sources aren’t to be found so I would think no energy means very slow wasps
So a wet paper wasp/hornet nest grows fungus and kills the colony. Does that suggest that hosing down a nest might kill off the colony?
Hey Shawn. Bought a two pack of your traps. Shave it off!! Nice video.
Try the beard, it's added sting protection!
Yes grow a big mountain man beard!
Shawn,I don't know if you know but, those nest sell for good money on eBay.
Horseshoe style for the beard!
When you take down an active nest, what happens to the foragers who were not at home?
If you find anymore abandoned nests, I do buy these for my collection given condition.
On the second nest, the new queens are already gone and settled in for hibernation, and the workers have all died. The hornets still in the nest are all male drones. They try to sting, but they’re equipped with male parts instead of stingers.
