I have been waiting for this film, so we’ll put together, lovely edit, top slips filmed in quality. Certainly some lovely birds in this film, the Bonellis is a beauty, they all were. Thank you.
@@jackpyke I look forward to watching them! I’m not sure if you’ve seen but I’ve messaged your Instagram account. I couldn’t see a way of private messaging on this platform.
I hunted jackrabbits with Red-tailed hawks and Goshawks for several years but found the quarry to be dangerous and the killing to be brutal. Using eagles to hunt this quarry may be more suitable as the size of the bird reduces the danger and quickens the kill. Eagles are dangerous to handle, though, and aren't for every falconer. There is excellent video of a Golden Eagle being flown at jackrabbits from a waiting-on position, and it is spectacular! This is completely natural for eagles due to their size, whereas flying from the fist, as an austringer would, is not. They will do it, but eagles are not sprinters. They are divers much like long-wings, and an eagle with speed is overwhelming to most quarry. Great video, BTW!
Yes most trained falcons, hawks and eagles wear hoods. The idea of the hood is to stop them from seeing things we don’t want them to see, that may upset or startle them. Or in our case with the eagles, it stops them from seeing the hares we don’t want them to chase. In most cases it just comes down to personal preference though.
