    • @hawkinsfalconry
      @hawkinsfalconry  4 роки тому +1

      Steve Hove Some Hawks take to it better than others, it’s a natural hunting strategy in the hills and thermal updrafts. I reward them for going high then increase duration. (My Bonelli’s does it for nearly three hours). I always try to provide a quick slip in early training like game hawking to reinforce their team hunting otherwise they can rake off looking elsewhere. Harris’ Hawks are normally quite good at hunting in cooperation with humans, dogs and ferrets so soon learn it’s more successful if they hunt in a pack. Following-on, waiting-on or off-the-glove are all excellent techniques if trained correctly and sufficient amounts of time.

      How many Goshawks have you flown?. Anyone who has successfully flown any bird of prey knows how rewarding the personal feedback is. Some are more challenging than others ie Goshawks, Sparrowhawks etc. Enjoying the success is what matters. Enjoy your flying and good luck.

    btw...the 'intro' is incredible!
    Dave Sharpe has talked about how a well-trained and well-conditioned Harris's is an incredible hawk, and you certainly show this here!
    I get the impression that Harris's are not only good 'performers', but seem to have tremendous intelligence, well beyond what one expects of 'instinct', and also look to be real "partners" with falconer, and other "team members".
    It must be a real pleasure to work (and play?) with your hawk?

  • @gunfighter550

    See I like it !!!! Just let the bird hunt it’s own meals that way he eats and you get to spend time and energy with them! The reward for you is the time you spend together and the bond you build at home it’s great. Not to mention those great four legged babies out there with you so well trained to let that bird eat that close to them .

    Hunting with birds of prey is definitely the most ethical method of hunting, i might even own my own bird one day

    • @hawkinsfalconry
      @hawkinsfalconry  5 років тому +2

      Ethan Skerry Although western civilisation will have you thinking otherwise, believe it or not hunting is totally natural. Most people are far too detached from the natural world these days.
      If you have the time, land, patience and dedication you’ll never regret the life changing effect falconry will have on you.

      Hawkins Falconry i see what you mean it’s just encouraging natural behaviours with birds of prey

    • @hawkinsfalconry
      @hawkinsfalconry  5 років тому +2

      Ethan Skerry It sure is a weird world sometimes. Some people say to me they disagree with hunting. Then happily go to a supermarket and get a plastic wrapped chicken off the shelf that’s spent it’s whole life living in a shed with 10.000 others. I know which method of gathering food is more ethical. But the person buying the chicken believes they are right? Until they’re educated on modern farming techniques...

    Notice how birds of prey always fly with the Sun behind them so predators cannot see them so well. Really clever. As seen around the 18 minute mark.

    • @hawkinsfalconry
      @hawkinsfalconry  5 років тому +2

      Darren Porter Yes. Airforces around the world have adopted this surprise attack strategy. Nature has all of the answers if you analyse it enough.

    • @MrEmiosk
      @MrEmiosk 5 років тому

      The reason is more that the sun is now out of the bird's eyes then any concious effort of "hiding" in its glare. It is more a happy coincidence.

    • @darrenporter1850
      @darrenporter1850 3 роки тому

      @@Steves_fish It's so the prey cannot see them. Lots of times I have tried to take a photo of a Kite hovering for example, and the sun is always right behind!

    • @hawkinsfalconry
      @hawkinsfalconry  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks, flown in minus 10 no problem at all. The most important thing to consider when managing at temperatures approaching freezing is wing tip oedema. I always free-loft my birds so they can roost at around 5ft to 6ft high away from frost level.

    Are you Harris hawks fast enough to gain on pheasants in flight?

    • @hawkinsfalconry
      @hawkinsfalconry  4 роки тому +1

      Kniv97 Waiting-on and following-on yes where he can transfer height into speed. Off the glove he’s good for up to around 100ft then the pheasants are faster and start to pull away on flat land. If the lay of the land involves a downhill flight he will make up ground.
