I feel for the people of Vanuatu after the earthquake. Our response to the aid will be a lot harder now as the HMNZS Manawhanui is no longer available to complete the under sea survey of the seabed. This will restrict the volume of aid supplied and will restrict volumes to airlift capacity.
I did NOT vote for Act (I voted for NZF and remain happy with that decision). But if this year's doings DO start a serious discussion of the role of the Treaty of Waitangi in NZ's constitition, I agree that this would be a very good thing. A three sentence treaty scribbled one evening by an employee of the British Crown and signed over the next few weeks by some (far from all) of the then rangatira of Maoridom is no basis for the constitution of a modern democracy. Personally I think it's long past time for NZ to exit the British Commonwealth altogether and become a Republic, with a constitution that is basically the presently "unentrenched" Bill of Rights Act 1990. I think this basic proposal should be further discussed next year and put to a binding referendum at the next election.

Have you been following the progress of the Gene Technology Bill? David Seymour has just supported it through to its first reading in the house.
