- "This Bob Weir-John Barlow song was only in the Dead's repertoire for four years, but it was a terrific first set addition, played in several arrangements, sometimes with a drumming introduction, and sometimes with the entire band coming in for a grand intro. I saw this at four of the first six shows I attended, and then it was dropped for good in October 1987." - David Lemieux

Bring back my full show video eh? For Jerry eh?
@@Damaraja most of the songs from In The Dark had been part of their live repertoire for years prior to the release of the album. I think the album release was more obligatory since they'd not made a studio album in 7-8 years.
@@tomcripps108 I always thought they probably still owed Arista but they gave the boys a fair deal to record the In the Dark album...under their own creative control and production. Top 40 hit emerges...who d'a thought?
Great facts! Love!
1982 is one of my favorite years for Grateful Dead music. At least one of the reasons is because it seemed like that was the year when Brent really hit his stride. I particularly enjoy the Scarlet>Fires from '82. Brent played his B3 on every version of Scarlet Begonias in '82 and never again in the years following. Couldn't tell you why. Brent on his B3 on Scarlet Begonias is magic! Brent could make that B3 growl! Not your grandmas church organ!!
Jerry doesn’t even look like he’s trying and is absolutely killing it! Unreal.
I miss Brent so much. I'm not sure he ever knew how much the fans loved him.
Seems certain that he didn’t know, and also doubted, but unlikely it would have made the difference if he did.
@@sailorr4287it is weird to think that some one with such talent would choose a short life when they have so much to live for. Maybe having such a talent is not such a blessing?
Phil out here 30 years ahead of the times with a 6 string headless bass
I Love how Bobby just shakes that off at 1:16 😂 There's no Band like the Dead !!!!! 💀⚡✌🏼❤😁🙏🌷🕊🎶
Only the Dead can do that with style ✌️💀
Almost like we're all used to it LOL!!!
😆😂🤣
PEACE 💀👽🎸🎶🎵
Only one and that's that
Jerry did the same during Jack Straw. His first line of the show he came in with his second verse. Its great.
Dead and Co 6-22-19 John Mayer messes up Box of Rain and struggles to get the band to restart with him. Bobby shoots him this glance like "fake it my boy, what are you doing"?!
Jerry looks at Bob like, you may have forgotten that line again but I'm killing this solo!
Very underrated song
bob had forgotten that line more often than he remembered it! love this song
I can't believe they only kept this in the mix for 4 years. Always did like this one too. This ones great.
And they inexplicably left it off the original release of the CD! ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_the_Dark_(Grateful_Dead_album)#Original_release ) For a while it was only avail. on cassette (and also the B-side of the Touch of Gray 45 rpm vinyl single). It's almost like they weren't sure they really wanted to stand behind it... The ambivalence is showing, big time.
It's brother to brother and it's man to man
And it's face to face and it's hand to hand
Shadow boxing the apocalypse and wandering the land. Love that line I used to yell at full volume in the dead of night
Jerome doesn’t look at the fret board once during the solo! No words for how good this guy is!
No words and too many, all at the same time, as it will be. Shakespeare had the gift with the pen, Picasso too with the brush, and Garcia with the guitar.
He's my favorite guitarist but not looking at the fretboard isn't unique.
Props for knowing his real name. (~):}
I didn't know I loved this song until I saw this performance of it. Love this whole show!
I didn't know I looked good in jorts until I saw this. Thanks Bobby👍
It's a sleeper tune. But so good
Brent, Looking "Focused"
Understatement ...he hmmmm
Brent is in the zone only he can get to
freakin laser beams popping outta his eyes
Now that is fucking funny!
🎟️
One of my favorite'unknown'Dead songs ever! Rippin fun!
I remember getting this album. I would listen to it over and over. Im so glad I got to experience The Grateful Dead live. Peace and love
Next tour d&c needs to bust this out. If they did my face would b gone 4ever ☠️🌹🤯
Furthur did it
bob weir and wolf bros busted it out recently
Would be great to bust out
Glad I got to see it live before it left their set list ⚡️💀🌹
This and When Push Comes to Shove should have been in the rotation longer.
Tons of steel also.
Viola Lee Blues and the Monkey and the Engineer as well.
absolutely love this song, thanks for showing it to me gramps rest easy ✌️
Jerry said in an interview one time that he truly loves just playing back up to a lead singer. It shows well here. Lovely.
I was fortunate enough to be out Left in 87' & see these shows. Good Times & Great Memories ! Keep em' coming. Brent's sporting poppy eyes, Bless his Heart, I love him & Jerry... Thank You👣⚘☠⚘
Bob in a tank top and Daisy dukes while Jerry's in a flannel and pants 😂
Jerry was grunge before grunge existed lol
Jeff P Neil Young would like a word.
In all seriousness my grandad, dad and uncles were all farmers ,fishermen, and brickmasons who dressed grunge so they may have invented it😉
In July🔥🔥
@@buckodonnghaile4309 was gonna say....didn't know many adults while I was growing up that didn't wear that. Long before grunge.
Wow! Now this is truly out of the vault. Not a song you hear very often but absolutely fantastic! Bobby forgets the verse but recovers with grace
The whole show is already available online and was officially released...it's already out of the vault
I saw them quite a few times in that era. The sound was excellent and they had their chops honed. Perfect Bliss.
Great timing I have been on a 87 kick this week.. Thanks for all the great high quality footage...
I think it was their best year of that decade.
most of these videos were on youtube already in higher quality and now youtube took all those down and is posting single songs from the shows. pretty wack.
cramstems420 I still find alot of full shows but most not high quality..
87 has so many good shows.
I saw 12 shows in ‘87. It WAS a really great year.
Jerry's solo. Fuck. Yes.
Go Brent. We miss you!!!
Daily
Thank you for posting this old footage.
Generatiins have found inspiratiin in the mysic of the Grateful Dead. They set the tone of my life work. You are the eyes ofbthe world. The wheel keeps on turning cast a ripple wher we no stine is thriwn. Much love overcomes all anti.
2:38 Nice shot of the tray of oysters Brent would eat on stage.
are those for real oysterz?
Yes
@@Norweeg that's soo rad!!!
no way! i thought they were cough drops lolol
I always wondered cuz he would eat them then later he was bugging like blow away at Philly if those are oyesters they had a drip of owseley had to of anyone agree??
This is a great song.
My brother Esau killed a hunter
Back in 1969
And before the killing was done
His inheritance was mine
But his birthright was a wand to wave
Before a weary band
Esau gave me sleeplessness
And a piece of moral land
My father favoured Esau
Who was eager to obey
All the bloody wild commandments
The old man shot his way
But all this favour ended when
My brother failed at war
He staggered home
And found me in the door
Esau skates on mirrors any more
Meets his pale reflection at the door
Yet sometimes at night I dream
He's still that hairy man
Shadowboxing the apocalypse
Wandering the land
Shadowboxing the apocalypse
And wandering the land
Esau holds a blessing
Brother Esau holds a curse
I would say that the blame was mine
But I suspect it's something worse
More my brother looks like me
The less I understand
The silent war that bloodied both our hands
Sometimes at night, I think I understand
Way late at night, more I feel I understand
It's brother to brother and it's man to man
And it's face to face and it's hand to hand
We shadowdance the silent war within
The shadowdance, it never ends
Never ends, never ends
Shadowboxing the apocalypse, yet again
Yet again
Shadowboxing the apocalypse
And wandering the land
Despite the verse flub Bobby recovers like a pro. The jack straw>Mississippi leading into this version is sick too
top tune. one of the best.
This in my top 5 shows
Long live The Grateful Dead 💀
What’s Dead May never die
The music will never stop
I was at this show! What great times!
The early versions of this were so trippy and amorphous.
Caught this at the Rochester show a few weeks before. After a "One, two, three take a step back!...and you'll see what you get as a reward...Brother Esau.
2:38 Jerry Solo keeper of the flame 🔥God Damn!
I am very sorry that our paths have ever crossed.
Something about this song timeless!!✌
This concert and Anaheim are very good.
The first time I heard this live I was blazed out of my gourd on some of the best shrooms I've ever eaten......and I've eaten a LOT. The only thing that made trippy sense to me, as I was in Bobby's face 8th row center, was "shadow boxing," as the trails from my hands when I lifted them was an extraordinary sight to be seen and somehow it made sense with what Bobby was singing. 4/9/87 was a life changer for me, but then again so was the next night as it was the first time in 10 years I ate "L" and it too was about as high as I've ever gotten. By the time the third show rolled around, I was so worn out I was laying on about 6 seats in the 18th row center, pretty much the entire show. "I remember well, the fruit and the tree from which it fell." Long Live The Grateful Dead!
This was SUCH a great song! I have no idea why Bobby chose to stop playing it. If anyone ever says something to you you don't like, just tell them "Stop shadowboxing the Apocalypse" and refuse to explain it. They will think about it for the rest of their days.
,,, played at merriweather post pavilion in ,,,, early '80s lolol - a great tune ( day job was also played at the show , as were firecrackers during the Drums/ Space )
i prefer the earlier lyrics. but man, i'd take any esau. should be in deadco rotation!
Barlow lyrics 🔥
You already ate all these keyboardist's hearts, did you not?
Thanks once again for another Gem.
Great version! Even with the lyric flubs, Bobby brings lots of emotion to this one. I appreciate this song way more now, it would have been cool to see what it could be if they kept it around more. thanks!
Jerry's just throwing out those licks like it ain't no thang...
Love this shit!!! (~);}
Thank you such much for this my favorite esau ever
Bobby just played this last night
This song brings it! I think of thje Vietnam War and scared I was for my brothers!!
Great version!!I might have been at this concert,as it was just a few days before my 47th.birthday.I bought the album when it came out and this song wasn't on it but my cassette copy had it.Jerry's even got the pedal steel on stage[rare].His most famous steel solo was on CSN&Y's album Deja Vu.He did Teach Your Children. The studio version starts with the sound of a Huey helicopter[think Viet Nam.
I love it Bobby always looked good
Coming out on Dicks picks volume 36 in a few days!
So grateful to have seen some performances of this grate song! Why they dropped it, I'll never know, unless Bobby tells me of course hahaha
My Fav !! Wanderin the land ;-)
Best years were with Brett
Jerry said "sure Bob, Ill play your song"
La mejor versión sin duda de esta canción , OLÉ
110 shows. Missed Esau by one show three times. I don't think Bobby has sung it since fall of '87. Anybody know differently? Would love to know he's done it with Dead & Co. or something.
I believe Furthur did it a few times if i'm not mistaken.
There is a really great version bob did with the National, from 2012 I think. I love that one.
Ratdog perhaps
Furthur played it in 2012 a few times
Bob re wrote a verse
o`the summer that went thru Telluride Co 8/15-16/87 @ the "Harmonic Convergence"
I remember that
Mr Shasta then Caavaris
Calavaris Ca
Greetings from the PhilZone!
I had that song on the taped version of In the Dark
I think I had Brent's exact shirt - going into 11th grade.
Is Brent rockin' oysters on the half shell?
Theyre mints
I love this song. Hello from Philly! Check out the 85 Greek version. Great tune.
at 4:12 Phil turns on his magic guitar color changing switch to make his bass morph......haha. gotta love it.
Thank you fellow omegle passerby for sharing this with me
2:48 doesn't even need to look what he's doing!!
He's amazed by Bobby
@@beachmasterX Aren't we all
Still shadow boxing the apocalypse over here
This is Weir's best song.
My favorite Bob song that died too soon.
Hallelujah!
the jerry shirt 🌹
Wow Bobby forgets a verse... Very Rare!
Lol he always forgetd that line
keith580, yes he does
Sometimes at night, I think I understand.
Fuck yes
This was my 2nd DEAD concert!!!
Esau singing about Esau 😂😂😂😂
You just keep on shadowboxing the apocalypse until God throws you into that wine press 🤣🤣🤣
😎 thanks
Cool how Jerry’s mixing things up with that shirt.
some people make a guitar face when they jam, jerry could just look you in the eye and jam at the same time cause the music was just part of him, it flowed out of him
Unreal
I love pig pen
thank you , cant wait for harvest peace
I love this song. Check out the earlier versions like Greek 85. God Bless The Dreadful Great. My wife Seriously hates this band. Oh well. We get along fine. Such is life.
Shadow boxing the apocalypse.
87, man
Phil's got the early stages of a Ziggy Stardust doo going on.
Bobby's upper lip was always hungry for a mustache.
Wish you guys would do more view from the vault type releases again!
They do-every Friday. Subscribe and stay tuned!
@@TonyMacFarlane so far they are just doing individual songs...they haven't released a full old Dead show on video in years
I like this tune. Kinda sounds like one of those filler Dylan songs off Blonde on Blonde or John Wesley Harding.
They keep releasing stuff that’s already been out for years and years 🤦🏻♂️
they could atleast upload it/the audio in HD too...
Really?
jay allard yea really lol
Ay it never gets old
Juan Cortez ehh I mean they have had this whole show in high quality on UA-cam as far back as 2012 from what I remember.
Why did Jerry always looked confused when Bobbie sang this song for us?
4 people got shadow box knocked out!
Esau singing about Esau 😂😂😂😂
You just keep on “Shadowboxing the Apocalypse”until God throws you into that wine press. 🤣🤣🤣
