Zombie” is a song performed by the Irish rock band The Cranberries. This song is widely considered to be one of the most famous protest songs of all time. It was written after an IRA bomb killed two children to protest the violence. 🙏
Deloris wrote this after 2 children were killed by an IRA bomb in the middle of a shopping area in England. She was performing that evening in an area nearby when it happened and it hit her hard. She is directing the song towards the IRA asking what is going on in your head? Do you think people are just zombies with no families, can't feel pain, can't feel loss? That's the gist of the song.
This is one of my favourite tracks ever. I was lucky enough to see it performed live and it hit me in the throat. I come from Belfast so what she is talking about is very real to me. I moved to Warrington a year after the IRA bombing that killed two young boys. It was only after Dolores O'Riordan's death that I realised that she wrote this song about that event. She was so upset by it. So yes, I have many reasons to feel personally connected to it. Even if I didn't this is a fucking powerful rock song
I’m sure you know this, but I always loved the story of how Dolores told him to play the drums as violently as possible to further underscore the tone and message of the song.
The song is about something called the troubles or Northern Ireland conflict which the IRA tried to end British rule in Ireland. The lead singer wrote the song as a response to 2 kids killed ages 3 and 12 that were killed in bombings carried out by the IRA. It is also is considered a major factor in the ceasefire that has lasted since 1998 in Ireland.
One of the most played songs on the radio back in my day. Her voice is absolutely breathtaking.. I can watch you all day.. your reactions are absolutely entertaining❤❤
Delores was a truly iconic singer. Her unique sound was so clear and beautiful. Zombie is definitely their signature song, but they have so many other wonderful songs. you have already done "Dreams" but "Linger", "Ode to my family" and "When you're gone" really need to be on the playlist soon. You will fall in love with the Cranberries and they will become a staple in any playlist.
RIP Dolores ...and yes, read up on Irish history, especially the continuing conflict in that beautiful land. it will make this song even more poignant and potent when you listen again. 👌 thanks for reacting to this!
The Bad Wolves cover is also a must listen. Up there with Sound of Silence in terms of cover songs IMO. Dolores was set to reprise her vocals on their version the day she passed away. Bad Wolves proceeded to release the song and donate proceeds to her children.
The bad wolves cover is one of the greatest covers of all time in my opinion. So full of emotion and passion and just truly sad about the circumstances
Women fronted bands were so good during this decade. In addition to this song, we had Hole, 4-Non Blondes, Alanis Morissette, Garbage, Lauryn Hill, Melissa Etheridge, Fiona Apple, and my personal favorite, Sade. Mary J. Bilge is a close second. Thanks for reviewing this and please, more women Artist of the 90’s. And you need to hit up Arrested Development and The Fugees… Thank you for the insightful reviews. You are doing an amazing job.
One of the most interesting things i have ever seen was an MMA fighter come out to this song in Ireland. They went to a short commercial break and the crowd was still singing zombie when they came back.
This song came out when I was ten. It was played on the radio constantly I listend to it over and over on my walkman. In the early to mid 90s that I remember on the news was always a conflict with the IRA someone always being killed and towns and businesses being bombed this song is a chilling anthem against that and all sensless acts of terror worldwide...as a kid I thought this video was so cool, so poweful but as am adult and mother seeing the little boys painted in gold screaming out in anguish kills me because of all the innocent lives lost and destroyed from violence, abuse, war or what have you it cuts deep! 😭

I'm so glad you did it!! This is one hell of a masterpiece. Dolores never disappoints, if you want to continue down her amazing vocal journey, check out the songs my fellow peeps below have suggested!!
When he said lightly I knew he was in for a quick reality check and it was sooner than I thought 😂😂 But seriously as an Irish woman this song is gutwrenchingly painful to hear but is so beautiful at the same time it stays on all my playlists to remind me.
I just touched my CDs of "Everybody else is doing it so why cant we?" and "no need to argue". I have "to the faithful departed" somewhere but I cant find it.
She's calling out the IRA and British for acting like a bunch of mindless Zombies for continuing a War that for the most part, has been over since the 1920s (A few flash points exempted). Every incident resulted in retaliation up through the 90s
The song was written in response to the death of Johnathan Ball, aged 3, and Tim Parry, aged 12, both of whom had been killed in the 1993 Warrington bombings, when two IRA improvised explosive devices hidden in litter bins were detonated in a shopping street in Warrington, England. The two boys had gone shopping to buy Mother's Day cards on one of the town's busiest shopping streets. Dolores O'Riordan in 2017, on writing "Zombie". It's an anti-terrorism song. It's not a nationalist or unionist song." SDLP leader Colum Eastwood wrote that "'Zombie' is an anti-war song written after the IRA killed 2 children in Warrington", adding that criticism of nationalist violence is not an endorsement of loyalist violence, writing "Most of us opposed both". Zombie: will-less and speechless human... their face or behaviour shows no feeling, understanding, or interest in what is going on around them. Anyone who receives orders or blindly executes orders..

You should react to the Bad Wolves cover of this song. They were set to do it as a duet with Delores but she passed away before it could be done so they did it as a tribute to her.
Do some research into what is referred to as "the troubles" in Ireland. It was a tragic conflict that lasted for decades and destroyed countless lives. I enjoyed your reaction and your understanding of the basic message of the song without any advanced knowledge of the situation.
My interpretation is when you are exposed to violence so often, you become dead inside. The Irish Republican Army protests against being under British rule. This isn’t about a formal war, but both people suffer just the same.
Google : Ireland, The Troubles and you’ll get an idea of the guys with guns, little kids playing war games in there neighbourhood in not your typical war zone
It’s about the Irish and England going at each other the zombie reference is bec ppl blindly follow orders. The kids represent the next generation of zombies blindly being guided into war.
IN 1993, 2 bombs went off killing several people, including a 3-year-old & a 12-year-old. It was done by the Irish Republican Army, in an English town & both the UK & the Irish people flipped out over this terrorism. The Cranberries are an Irish band & were horrified by this act.
NOW YOU MUST DO "BAD WOLVES - ZOMBIE" It's an AMAZING cover/tribute to the lead singer Deloris who passed away (the same day she was going to sing on the cover) so they did it anyways and pay tribute.. so beautiful!! PLZ REACT!! YOU WILL LOVE!!!!!! BEST COVER EVER IMO!!
