Well done for keeping so calm and politely correcting her on everything. She knew she’d lost the argument when she went on to helmets 🙄
my gosh sir you are cool headed, respect!
Ok, helmet is a actually good idea (depending where you travel though), but of course isn't mandatory in most countries. Naturally, that wouldn't change a thing cos she would find another placeholder topic to rant about. She obviously caused a potentially dangerous situation (and broke the law), but in normal circumstances I wouldn't report her. This however was escalated by her nonsense later, so she basically asked to be reported herself - I would shut her up with this actually; if she doesn't want to pay a fine that is. I actually hope you did after these TWO "discussions" initiated by her.

However, the result of a head injury is seldom good.
I’d of thought cyclists would have agreed but……
It's funny she's complaining about him not moving over to let her pass, yet they still keep meeting up at the same traffic lights. She's not traveling any faster than he is right now.
Find me a cyclist who has NEVER had a driver impatiently swerve around, then mash the gas and rev their engine to get to that next red light, who the cyclist casually catches without the slightest effort. You won't be able to!
@@dudeonbike800 I love to be so petty as to casually pass over their cars and position myself in front (the designated space for bikes to wait the light in my city). And it cost me 0 pesos to get ahead of you, I even got a slightly bigger ass
Yeah, the speed inside a city is determined by the lights. All these idiots accelerate just to stop at red lights.
@@VacuousCat In the city I live in, they lowered the speed limit 5 mph.
It's driving people crazy. Most of the lights time out if you go the speed limit. Of course the can't seem to control themselves so the y have to park it at every light.
I have to admit to feeling a little smug just running along through the lights.
Most of them don't seem to have pattern recognition skis either.
@@christophereaton4527 I'd say the the lights need retuning. When they added an intersection in from of my apartment, it took 5 years of trial and error until the light pattern is settled.
Why do motorists do this. Had a very similar incident where the motorist ended the argument with why are you not wearing a helmet. After they did an illegal turn and missed me by an inch. It’s then my fault, for not wearing a helmet. Simply incredible
I hit the pavement avoiding a PU truck and a huge flatbed trailer that made a left turn in front of me... He said I had been "hiding behind a telephone pole." Fortunately a witness saw it all and stopped, and put him in his place. No explaining how some people see the world.

the entitlement that you inherit when inside a vehicle is mind boggling
If you are a total wanker, yes...
Funny how people in a position of relative power (i.e. driving a car vs riding a bike) are prone to let that tiny bit of power go to their heads.
I have seen this so often on my 37 year commute by bicycle. I often hear the term," cyclist think they own the road " but the second you get into any altercation with them, drivers will often say that I should be on the footpath. In other words they believe the road is for them alone.
Would be interesting to see how she behaves around a Hummer with her mini
Take away her license ASAP.
It’s ironic that drivers complain so much about bicyclists not being licensed since in my experience bicyclists and pedestrians are usually way more informed about the law than drivers. We have to be, since we’re getting into arguments about it so often
Just ask if she'd like to discuss it at the police station.
I did that once. It was right across the street, too. The driver just high-tailed it out of there.
@@OnYourLeft I'm adding this to my list of retorts for every driver who tries to harass me at a junction xD

You handled that perfectly. You were calm, pleasant, factual, and you educated her on the basics of road use. She was behaving like a petulant child who just wanted her own way.
We are in an epidemic of ignorance.
Just unbelievable!
So she thought she'd get as close to you as possible to teach you to share the road properly and wear a helmet because you might get hit by idiots like her.
She probably wanted you to show her some gratitude for the valuable lesson she taught you.
Just love trolling satire
The mirror was 6" from your handlebar, so this was very dangerous and aggressive driving. Well done for keeping your cool
The Netherlands is the country with the highest percentage of cyclists and the lowest number of mortal accidents. There is no obligation for helmets and very few people actually wear them. A high number of cyclists on the road is the best way to increase their safety. Therefore in the Netherlands and also in Belgium (where I live) governements chose not to put an obligation on helmets but make cycling as accessible as possible.
You should wear a helmet. It can make a big difference in a crash.
@@kixigvak Wearing a helmet isn't a vaccination for being hit by a driver. And wearing a helmet results in drivers buzzing you.
@@langhamp8912 You have clearly never been knocked off your bicycle to the ground. I have been twice and each time the helmet saved my life. Just watch this video: ua-cam.com/video/ioS-CcgddHU/v-deo.html At 0:18 you can see the cyclists falls to the ground and hits the asphalt surface with the back of his head. A potentially fatal blow, but thanks to wearing the helmet he likely got away at worst with a concussion.
@@82vitt Wearing a helmet is safer in a crash. That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about that bicycling on public roads often enrages drivers so they ram you, but are much less to do so if you're not wearing a helmet, if you're female, and/or if you're carrying a child.
Hence, we see helmet usage is correlated with fatality rate; the more often you wear a helmet the likelier you are to die. Bicyclists rarely die from bicycling; they die when drivers ram them.
@@langhamp8912 lol no it doesn't. Drivers don't go looking for helmeted cyclists. When I see a helmet, I see a serious cyclists vs someone who lost their driver's license over a DUI. I ride both motorcycles and bikes and ebikes (and drive cars) and always buy a car with full protection (aka can roll over or handle a crash 5 stars, no less) and wear a full helmet on the MC and cycling helmets on the bikes. Maybe in Europe drivers hunt for helmets. Not here. A driver is either hostile or not and the helmet is not the target. The helmet isn't about getting hit by cars, though if properly worn can help- it's about a spill while riding, such as hitting a pothole, a valve stem leak on a steep downhill grade, being in the wrong gear uphill and losing control.
There is also the small matter of not cycling in the door zone, cyclists have been killed by the careless opening of a car door.
Last clear chance, 99.99% the door opening the door don't see you, it is your responsibility as a cyclist to look ahead and look at any obstruction. I always look at the inside of the car to see if there is a person and I just instinctively assume they might open the door. Just slow down and be ready to move lanes.
@@mannyechaluce3814 It becomes a subtle game between paying atention to the potential door openings and the potential close calls with the cars behind you. It is quite stressful lol
@@PascualSeba So true! I have the luxury of being able to bicycle to and from work every day, so I'm on the road a lot and there are not a lot of bike lanes where I live. A few months ago I started using my bike lights during daylight hours as well and I saw an immediate improvement in the driving of the cars around me on any given ride.
In Japan I was biking along the way to a popular beach, the traffic was stopped and a women opened a car door to get out without looking. I quickly braked and ended up stopped with my wheel between her legs and my face two inches from hers. She was quite scared. Luckily I didn't fall off my bike, but if I did she would have padded my fall.

@@stratman9449 can’t argue the truth 😉😂
Say what you may, when riding a bike and some ass almost runs me over at intersection when I'm going straight and they are turning (right of way laws US), so I have the right of way, I'll throw a few words their way. Yeah people talk about cyclists not following the rules of road, that is absolutely BS.
People in car, vans and lorries being inconsiderate put the lives of people on bikes and on foot in real danger. People on bikes being inconsiderate may make a person in a car several seconds later for their all so important meeting or queuing at the shop. Boo hoo.
That lane was too narrow to “share “. Plus, there was another open lane to the right.
Where in the law does it say cyclists have to share their lane with motorists? In most jurisdictions cars and bikes are treated the same way. If was in a car and someone can into my lane and clipped me, I wouldn't be at fault for not "sharing" the lane. The driver who intruded in my lane would be 1000% at fault. Works the same way with cyclists.
@@j2simpso We have this issue in Ontario, Canada. The highway traffic act is worded to say bicycles must ride "as far to the right as practicable". This means that cyclists can ride wherever the fuck we like in the lane we deem it safer to do so...but drivers (including the police) read only the words "Far to the right".
They even have a phrase "tight and too the right". It's a dangerous but prevalent misinterpretation that leads me to many heated arguments on the road.
@@alpd7638 used to live in Ontario and feel your pain. Heck I get in arguments with motorist here in Sydney where the rule is the same. I tell them, look if my tires clip the curb or gutter or if I hit a pothole and my tire goes pop and I end up flying off my bike I can guarantee you it won't be safe for either of us.
Lots of car drivers are incredibly ignorant of the law and when you couple that with arrogance you get this

if anything had happened he's dead and she's alive

you were very calm - well done for explaining the law so clearly to her and to us!
it's the old farts that are honestly the scariest to me. Not only do they lack the hand-eye coordination of a younger driver, they carry these absurd misconceptions in their minds when they get behind the wheel of 2-ton metal boxes.
I've never seen someone get so verbally berated in such a nice and calm demeanor.
If you rode more, you would have plenty of opportunities to develop this sort of demeanor. I once had a motorist drive around a block to tell me that he would kill me if he saw me make a left turn again. A lt of cyclists are pretty chill from riding so are even more chill than this guy.
Crazy. She expected you to be right in the door zone. And even then, she had the room to pass you safely where you were but choose instead to close pass you for not being in the door zone!! Drivers like this definitely need re-educating. And yes, I have a driver's licence!
i hear that all the time as well, they sit nice and protected in their car and don´t realise how much damage they could cause if a crash happened
That woman should be banned on the grounds of dangerous driving for her intimidating manoeuvres, she clearly purposefully drove too close to you because she felt she 'owned the road' more than you but in the process put you at grave risk. People like that should have their licence rebuked and have to learn road awareness on a push bike!
I only just came across this now and as a non cycling car driver...I'm TOTALLY 100% on the side of the cyclist here. Well done Sir!
I bet this bloke also stands still right in the middle of the escalator with no regard for busier people who'd like to get past him. Because it's his right and it's not against the law.
I've cycled on the UK roads all my life and of course encounter this kind of thing all the time. My take is that the argument about bikes having equal 'rights' to cars isn't the best approach.
Drivers behave like this because they perceive safe cycling as arrogant and selfish. All they see is a bike blocking their way, and they get angry, and they punish us by driving too close, speeding past, etc.
Nothing is justifiable about that, but the solution isn't to persuade drivers that bikes have a right to piss them off, but to educate everyone to understand why cyclists need to occupy space in order to travel safely, so drivers don't get pissed off by safe cycling.
Yes, partly that's about persuading drivers that bikes have the 'right' to be on the road. But its also about helping them to understand why we need to take the lane, avoid being too far left (in the UK), etc.
Best way to understand this is to ride a bike yourself. So the obvious solution is a long mandatory regime of road cycling for everyone who wants to earn a driving licence, and a legal requirement to spend a certain number of hours cycling on roads every year to keep the right to drive.
Problem solved.
Exactly I think they see a small e-scooter rental or bike and assume we don't need space . I ride e-scooters an some don't seem to understand a drain or raised painted yellow line can destabilise such light vehicles as bikes and scooters and that we don't have the same stability as 4 wheeled vehicles. Yet you are in the wrong for following traffic laws and making enough safe space to avoid stuff like drains and potholes in the very side of the road.I do think its a very small minority of drivers though most have let me out and give me room.
I completely agree, but that dude should have been wearing a helmet for his own safety, unfortunately there will be worse than this lady on the roads, and we have all encountered situations like that I'm sure?
I used to not care about cyclists, until I finally purchased one and decided to hit the road (with a helmet and all lights of course) took me a few months to gain competence, but as a result, I now have much more empathy for cyclists and my attitudes changed, I actually prefer cycling more than driving now. Regards from the UK 🇬🇧
Wait ... You purchased a cyclist ? Isn't buying people illegal these days ?
The very first time I jumped on my bicycle in London back in 1997 was my shock at the attitude of car drivers. I was called You People within 15 minutes. But the ability to overtake lots of cars in long queues encouraged me and my car became a bit redundant.
That's why most urban bicyclists end up wearing earplugs or headphones; the constant screeching of drivers and their horn honking gets old fast.
@@blahqwe You do have a good point. Drivers inside their well insulated cars seem to get into a lot of crashes. Let's require all vehicles to have no sound insulation whatsoever.
@@blahqwe Cars are designed to exclude sound while also having a first rate sound system. Hence, the common observation of drivers pulling out in front of ambulances and fire trucks and the nonexistent observation of bicyclists with headphones doing the same.
In the case of a bicyclist being mowed over by a driver then being judged at fault, yes, you're absolutely right. Even if the driver is drunk, isn't licensed, isn't insured, was driving the wrong side of a road and ran a red light into a bicyclist who is at a standstill properly observing all traffic laws...the bicyclist is still judged at fault and will not collect a penny in insurance if he survives, and will be written as the bicyclist's fault in the police report. Most drivers who aren't drunk and who ram a bicyclist and kill him do not get traffic ticket.
The US is a nation of drivers. The laws governing law and punishment collisions between drivers and lesser human beings hence favor a driver's speed and convenience over a bicyclist's life.
@@blahqwe I have not encountered the situation whereby hearing a driver approaching me allowed me to take action. I have had lots of situations when enraged drivers honked at me for using a public street.
What specific situation did you find hearing helped you?
@@blahqwe I don't use headphones or earplugs that play music. They only cancel outside sound.
When she said show me your license I would have said you show me your license. Then I would have said, I smell booze have you been drinking ?
Nobody should be going faster than 10-15 mph on that road - full of pedestrians, driveways, and businesses. Cyclists can easily go the same speed as cars, and cars shouldn't be overtaking cyclists. On these types of roads, cyclists are entitled to the whole lane and don't need to pull over since they go at the same speed as cars.
actually most bikes can probably break what the speed limit should be by a huge margin
Surprised she didn't ask to see your passport too.
She had an entire lane to move into if she wanted to overtake!
There is no point in arguing, drivers Are stupid. Smash their mirror and leave.

wow, how calm and polite you kept being! congrats
Just send the footage of her to the authorities, don't get in a discussion with her,she clearly wrong and a inconsiderate persons, you can not reason with with motorist with a attitude like that. But the footage in the hands of the authorities may lead to her being charged or a letter of warning, which will be much more convincing educational argument than any debate you may have with horrible motorist with that sort of attitude.
Can’t argue with stupid.
Somehow it's 'your fault' she overtook too close!
That logic baffles me!
She is a thoughtful woman, thinking only of your safety. Therefore, it worries her that you are not wearing a bicycle helmet. I wonder if that's why she pushed you when she passed. Such a little upbringing of her fellow road users she can afford as a motorist. I have seen a Danish study that showed that motorists drive closer to cyclists who wear helmets. So if you had remembered your helmet, she would probably have helped you forward with a friendly push.
Nonsense aside. I think she would like to share the road, but preferably with someone with the same status as she herself has (motorist).
Good for you! You handled that with a lot of class.
She needs a good Sharp back hander..
You handle that excellently,no swearing no shouting and you put your point across, well done mate
I really do hope she went away and looked up the law on this and educated herself. If she didn't, all she has proven is how ignorant she is and that she is in the wrong.
People like this didn't get this far in life by looking stuff up when people tell them they're wrong.
How I see helmets when cycling,
going 40km/hr in racing gear ( Yes )
going 13km/hr to the shops to buy groceries (not necessary)
You handled that very well. I'm not sure I could've been so cool. Great job.
The only way that woman is going to understand what it's like to be a cyclist is to be a cyclist. Other than that, you may as well try to get a religious zealot to become an atheist.
Would be interesting to have a set of "long whiskers" wires projecting around the bike, so that when someone comes too close, they get a nice scratch on their car. Just dreaming here. Good video, good debate done at the stop lights.
At stop lights and stop signs, BMX pegs to fenders, doors, or quarter panels work ever time.
Vigilantism will not improve relations with auto drivers, but it will get you thrown in jail.
The moment a driver is so concerned by your safety that she asks you to wear a helmet, but before she is almost causing an accident trying to put you in the place she thinks you belong
That's why I always get off to the side of the road when a car is coming.
Shared, what arrogance and ignorance by that red mini driver, beggars belief.
It's like talking to the wall and I think the wall would listen more.
An absolutely typical reaction from some one driving their car . I would love to see anyone prosecuted for careless or dangerous driving compelled to ride a bicycle on the streets for a week . That'll learn 'em .
It has been my experience that riding in the center of the lane (when there is no wide shoulder or bike lane) is safer. Moving over to the right encourages cars to pass me in the same lane, sometimes inches away. Controlling the lane encourages the car driver to use the other lane.
you're too polite to the Granny Karen
Well you get more bees with honey....or something like that.
Dude you handled this with grace. Well done. I've had way too many of these encounters go sideways fast in my personal experience.

@@MrOlympuse410 Maybe in some utopian, idyllic place those bicyclists reduce traffic. Here in Pittsburgh, entire lanes have been removed for bike lanes; increasing traffic. Streets became one way; increasing traffic.. Parking eliminated; more traffic looing for parking. All so 3 or 4 cyclists can feel 'safe' riding around on the 9 sunny days we have each year. That's why I have a mirror on my helmet and check it every 3-5 seconds and if someone is passing too close I move over to open some space if I can do so safely. Ultimately, the goal is to not get hit or hit anyone and not to prove a point or fight for priority with a 3000-pound piece of steel.
And here lies the problem! She drove as close as she dared in order to "punish" you because she believes (incorrectly) that her car takes priority over bikes ("you don't even need a driving licence") and that this, therefore, gives her the "right" to put your life in danger in order to "teach you a lesson." Is that a red light attached to the front of your bike?
BTW, I no longer bother arguing with car drivers, I just take the lane and leave them in frustration.
The only reason for a person on a bicycle to actively take a full lane of space is to get the chance to yell at someone. If you use your bicycle in tight traffic - expect to be close to trafic. It´s not your private livingroom.
