Ok...was checking my phone while visiting Jason who's in palliative care unfortunately. So we're talking and i hadn't told him this was coming as it was to be a surprise and then i see this notification pop up on my phone lo and behold it's the reaction video (which i did not expect so soon). So all of you don't know the details but i can tell you this was so emotional. Grabbed the headphones and the tablet for a bigger screen and we got to watch this together. It was hard to choose between this a d another song but Jason loves the instrumental so we went with that. Now i can tell you this is a moment i will never forget and Jason is having one of his better days today. He's got a terminal form of cancer in the spine. After i stepped (to get a drink) and cried as to not sully the positive vibes. This is the best online community ever....and im not being specific to guitar communities. Michael....you're just the best and your crew are salt of the earth people. Thanks for making a very hard time that much more bearable. I was going to say i don't know if you realize what a big deal this is for Jason especially...but i think you do. And i know this video won't drive the algorithm, but I love seeing Colin on your page. Some people will know....he's definitely paid his dues. Thank you so much and may god bless you 🙏
I'm from a little town in Saskatchewan where Colin James was born. He wound up in Vancouver, opened for SRV when he was about 18 and another act dropped out, and then charged through rock, big band, swing, blues, and damn near any genre you could imagine. His version of "Into The Mystic" is my favorite. Saw him the first time live with Jeff Healey at a little venue in Calgary and then caught him in Toronto and Manhatta. Had a chance to chat with him a bit in Manhattan. Was as nice as you can be.
Hey Michael. As a proud Canadian, SO glad you picked a CJ song!!! He's so amazing. Ice seen him at least 11 times live and he's great every time. This song Speechless was written when he hear of the news of SRV. It's a truly poignant song because SRV gave him a shot as an opening act back in the 80s. Check out all his stuff because it's all so good. He's ana amazing writer, player, singer and musician Cheers!!!
Hell yeah!! Gordy with that Killer heavy tone and guitar strings like power line cables. Saw them live many times as well. I love his cover of Dear Mr. Fantasy!!!! From my hometown of Winnipeg as well 🤟
@@DavidSmith-fz2xk the second time I saw them was at my college bar. I was so close I literally could have spat on his amp. I think I have displaced molars because of it. Their opening band was a bunch of Alberta kids named Nickelback.
I saw Colin first time in the 90's...had a few radio hits here in Canada. Great blues chops. Not a flashy player, but he plays super clean and he has a great voice.
Sorry to hear about Jason cancer has had its run through my family so my heart goes out to his.. Mike should check out his other material. His catalogue includes working with a horn section in both Little Big Bands albums. Really solid stuff. His singing voice is great. He's a musician's musician. He's not afraid to let the other band members shine and they are damn good..
Colin James and Jeff Healy were both multi-talented guitarists that promoters pushed for their connection to the SRV and his sound. I love Colin James' " Little Big Band " era. He had that Vancouver/Toronto sound like The Powder Blues Band and Downchild.
Great video. Awesome breakdown. The grid of videos that popup when you pause. To get rid of click the word UA-cam at bottom right of video. This will open video on UA-cam channel and now when you pause video no grid popup. This is happening because you are watching video embedded from a different site and the grid is showing video recommendations from them. Hope this helps Michael Cheers from Canada
OMG Michael. I've been wondering about leads over different chords for years and you just cleared it up for me in this video. I knew that just playing in the key center / scale of the key worked, but I also knew that I heard others doing more advanced things beyond that and I wasn't sure if I should solo in the key of the song or the scale of the chord playing at the time. Your explanation makes perfect sense, I really appreciate all you do!
I came for the video brcause I've seen Colin several times and I feel he's very underrated. But I really appreciated your lesson on how much we can learn from this solo. Personally I got a lot out of it! Thank you!
As great of a tune this is and it is.... The reasoning behind this video is so much more great and the reason why Michael and his crew are above all others in the UA-cam land.... Thanks Michael
Colin James is from my home town, Regina, Saskatchewan! Yes, Colin has been on the scene since at least the 1980s or earlier, so he's no spring chicken and knows his guitar! 🎸😉👌
@@DavidSmith-fz2xk Sorry to hear about your friend and his problems, David. Are you from Regina, too? I was born and raised there but have lived in Calgary since 1977. Came here when I was 19. I first heard Colin in 1988. Some of the guys in my audio engineering class liked him.
Have a look at some Max Webster /Kim Mitchel . Crazy good playing/songwriting. Anything off of the Universal Juveniles album will get the deep dive going . Cheers and thank-you for what you do
Michael, check out Prism Armageddon, and Night to Remember. Love your opinion. These are Canadian bar and 5000 seaters from the 70's and early 80's that are underrated and as good or better than their American counter parts at the time. Check it out, worth the effort.
Michael! Max Ostro dropped a new solo from a track called “starry eyed dreamers”. Please do a video on it. And Matteo Mancuso released his new song called “drop d”. Would love to see something on that too if possible. Thanks!
@@kane6529 yep. Max is my favorite because his solos are total ear candy. I love the newest one he did on the JTC collab. I’m totally addicted to every solo he’s ever done. Lol
I think he played too loud, basic blues played at a high volume can make you stand out like a sore thumb,he's very melodic, but I always like to hear what a player is soloing over, once you get stuck in the high volume mode, you lose a lot of opportunity to push the dynamics when you really need them, effects the way you have to play, and everything, when, your dependent on volume for your style.
Idk .....im not really diggin collin....sorry its good... its more like "hey i got this vamo in G/em and lets go...good But IMO not really writin home. (And im a lyrical soloist/trying to get more speed while staying in key

From Ireland: never heard of Colin James before but boy, he is one tasty player.
A Legendary Canadian performer. I’ve seen him 6-7 times and never disappoints.
good choice Jason....my thoughts and prayers! God give you peace and strength :)

Colin is one of the most underheard, underrated guit/singers anywhere. Met him in person, awesome human being
Please do more Colin James. He really gets it. The kinda thing that rag dolls your heart and leaves you wrecked in the feels. More is just not enough.
Colin is our pride and joy here in Canada
Met Colin a couple times, really sweet person.
I saw Colin James live years ago at a venue called “The Key To Bala”, in Bala Ontario. He is a brilliant guitarist and has a great voice.

You should spend some time with his catalog. He's worth it!
Love Colin James! Seen him live a couple times out here (BC, Canada) and the guy is just fantastic!
That’s cool. sounds like that walk up stuff to me I immediately hear part of axis bold as love.
Colin has been around the Vancouver scene for years, such a solid and strong player

This guys song sounds like a mix between Tuesday’s Gone by LS and Life Without You by SRV
I was definitely hearing Tuesday's Gone!
Colin James did a bunch of works with the little big band, well worth looking up.
… and a new Little Big Band album on the way
Canadian legend who doesn't get much recognition. Colin and SRV toured together just before he died. Good acoustic player as well
Just saw CJ Blues Trio last night, the guy is da bomb. So good, such a righteous evening for a wanna be player.

Colin James is a great guitarist and musician...and a "hometown" boy (Vancouver, although he's from Saskatchewan)
FINALLY
Very well known in Canada of course. Mentored (a wee bit) by SRV when he was young. He still looks pretty young here, this must be a while ago.
Colin James...Sudden Stop...1990. Enough said....Smoking and tasty licks ALL over this remake....

Didn’t know Edward Norton was so good at guitar in the 90’s
So a young couple had a kid and they didn’t know what to name him, so they Call’em James!

G11, not a sus
I dont dislike Colin but this is a wee bit too derivative. Id like to hear a bit more of him come through
I really wanted to put Bad Habits up but it was my brother's choice.
No comparison to SRV AND LENNY👎👎👎👎
keep it simple and play less . cannot teach feeling . Cheers

Well, so much for listening to Colin. You wore out your pause key. Every 4 sec pauses is painful. This time, you stayed way too long in the weeds.
