Hey hi here's another Charlie Puth video only this time I figured we should finally maybe actually look at his actual music. Also please check out the merch if you're interested I'll love you forever, but also probably still will if you don't so that's ok too.
This is why I love Charlie Puth's music. He brings his jazz knowledge into the mainstream pop and slowly spoils us with more enriching sounds not commonly found in pop.
Yes I agree, but I feel like a lot of music is as good as this song, but just gets written off as pop. There's some good stuff on the radio! **and a lot of bad stuff too lol
@@NoahStolee For sure, pop has been pretty awesome lately. During his #togetherathome IG live, even Charlie seemed super stoked to see/hear cool stuff happening in some of the radio hits. An example being Doja Cat - Say So haha
Charles and Charlie HAVE TO meet. It's essential to everyone's well being. Wow guys, thanks for all the likes. I never expected to get anywhere near 500. Also Charles, you should listen to Charlie's arrangement of "In my blood" by Shawn Mendes. I think u will like it.
Sydney Dumoit Actually anyone can do what Charles does believe it or not, it just takes a shit ton of practice not perfect pitch. Basically in relative pitch, instead of hearing the notes as its specific note, people with relative pitch can hear notes based on its function of the key its in. So for example even though he cant hear that a certain note is a C he can tell that its the 4th degree in the scale because of intervals. So with a really good relative pitch it can be pretty much as good as perfect pitch! Ive been playing piano for a couple years and have the ability to play things I hear as well (not as quick as charles of course but Im definitely getting there)
You know Charles is a Jazz musician, when he mentions that the chords are diatonic while diatonic chords are almost the only ones you hear in pop songs😂
Charlie's use of space to compliment the sound is amazing. He doesn't play a very busy solo and it really helps listeners, especially when they aren't as appreciative of really technically complex solos.
“Boy” was legit my fave song on this album-that groovy syncopation, the playful melody over that awesome chord progression... hats all the way off to him for this banger! 🙌🏾
Thank you so much for this. Being in the "pop" sphere I think that charlie puth is often passed over for his musicianship. This song has always been my favorite on the album because of the incredible level of detail put into into it. Thank you for making a video that showcases this. Charlie puth is one of the rare artists in the modern music industry that still cares for the craft of composition despite it being for mainstream consumption. This song showcases his true understanding of jazz and pop musical elements as well as his understanding of music in general.
Have you ever thought of getting a loop pedal or loop station of some sort to play chords or stuff and then add notes or other things over it while explaining? May not work for you, just a suggestion. You could always try and see if it fits. Anyway love your stuff, keep it up!
I love how I understand absolutely nothing about Jazz music theory or how it works, but it's really addicting to watch him being himself and enjoying the chord progressions that I don't understand about.
I was watching a video (for the 15th time) of you breaking down Charlie's piano playing literally about 4 hours ago. Said at the end: "OMG if he would only listen to BOY." Prayers answered.
This is my favorite song of Charlie's. First time I heard it, I think I hit the replay at least 200 times...yes, all day. Some more the next day as well.
Charlie Puth perfectly infuses the best elements of a bunch of genres into one.. Pop melodies, jazz chord progressions, funk inspired bass lines and R&B inspired drum patterns...this is why we love him! No one else does it like he does
Honestky youre still an underrated youtube channel. Not only have you helped me learn more piano but your content is enjoyable as well which is a bonus on top of the amount of skill it takes to get to your level of music theory and the piano itself. Thanks again for another great video, keep it up man!
This was amazing, dude! Ever since Voicenotes came out 2 years ago, I have always gravitated back to this song because of its sick groove and overall phenomenal sound production, and now, two of the best jazz-tubers have mentioned and done an analysis of the dang song. Although many of Puth's songs are great in their own right, this song deserves this special treatment more than anyone, and I would hardly recommend any other of his songs more than this one. Keep up with your great content!
Bringing up a new channel in the crowd and bringing entertaining and quality educational content to the table at the same time is pretty darn hard. You, sir, are officially nailing it.
Thank you for appreciating Charlie!! Also, thank you for being the amazing musician you are. Lastly, thank you for reviewing my favorite Charlie Puth song.
I've been listening to Voicenotes since it came out and it's so nice to hear a new perspective about the other tracks besides the title. Also, Charles is mindblowingly good at picking up the jazz solo! I couldn't even imitate that in my head
So great to hear Charles pulling apart my favorite Charlie Puth song (That's putting it above so many that blow me away), BOY! When it first came out, I kept saying, "why isn't this a single……why isn't the world being exposed to the FULL CHARLIE PUTH?". Obvious! A bit too sophisticated for his pop audience. Still, that may be underestimating others who listen to this genre hungering for something as amazing as this! But most of all it's great to hear someone as talented as Cornell singing the praises of my favorite musician!
Charles! Dude, your listening skills are amazing. Have you used any specific ear training exercises or routines? Or would you say your ability to quickly discern what you're hearing is a result of doing music at a high level for many years? For melodic lines, do you hear intervals or do you know the pitches after establishing the key? I'm working on building my skills and I'm curious how it works for you. Love your content!
Hey! I'm 9 months late with a comment, but I think a LOT of Charles' listening skills are coming from experience. When he finds the first note or chord, he can pretty reliability find the next note/chord he hears, by referencing what he hears against what he played before and which note/chord is most likely to follow it. (He explains this sorta in the Charlie Puth 'perfect pitch' video.)
Been a Charlie Puth fan for a long time and also being a musician, I aspire to be like quite similar to Charlie musically, love when you post vids with Charlie in and breaking down his songs like chord progressions, tempos and just helping me a lot more in the music theory side.. Thanks a lot for that and love/support these types of music breaking like contents!
Listens through the solo part probably less than 50 times and and totally nails it. I've really gotten into Charlie's music the last couple years after realizing how much of a musical enigma he is in modern pop music. "Boy" is one of my favorite songs of his. Just such a cool song musically
Yaasss!! Thank you for your analysis! Love this song. I remember having the same reaction you had listening to “Boy” for the first time, realizing what I thought was the beat was not the beat but actually the rhythmic motif. Everything about this song is just perfect. Love it!! Thanks for sharing!
I’m kinda conflicted about Charlie. I think his musicianship is fantastic (obviously) and that it shows in the production and instrumentation of his songs, but I just feel that his lyrics are.....well, kinda basic. He’s talked before about how his lyric-writing is “literal” and “straightforward”....I just think the juxtaposition does himself a disservice and that some more lyrical creativity would take his music up a level!
he did say that everything he writes about is stuff that he experienced before tho, so I think that, even if it is kinda basic or mainstream, at least he's talking from his heart.
I was actually just about to write something similar. I feel his music is really mature, his singing really good but his lyrics make him seem very young, kinda Britney-ish. But whatever works I guess.
Pop music must be simple in order to resonate with as many broad audiences as possible. It’s part of why senorita became super popular despite not really meaning anything.
I think a large part of that really is intentional, Charlie probably isn't as much a lyrical genius as he is a producer and musician. Therefore I feel he gives more liberty to the music itself. I know he is a competent lyricist, but I feel that it's not as much an expression of his creative output as much as the rest of the music. Of course industry pressure is always there, hit songs don't get popular for their complexity, they do because of how much people have heard it, how 'fresh' it is to the eyes of the media, and how much marketing is put into it. The more complex the lyrics are the more people 'seem' to be alienated by it or dismiss it since at the end of it all, nearly all hit songs are songs you play at the club, in the car, or alone in your room because you're completely tuned out of the lyrics regardless. Of course this is not to say that lyrics with a larger or more-complex story behind them don't get awards or become hits, they do, but the complexity in the lyrics is usually a surprisingly-small factor of its success, but rather something people and the media throw around to praise this song whether or not its lyrics are truly meaningful.
Charlie Puth is an absolute genius and this song is a perfect example of that. Hope the world realises that soon. I mean, show me another artist who can blow your mind musically and also make the song so fun and catchy at the same time! And nobody knows this song!!!
Id love a review of some Anderson.Paak music. Def mainstream but still thought provoking and jazzy at times plus his musicianship is top tier as well. Love the vids man btw!!
This song and analysis brings me back to that time I went to his concert when he was touring in Canada and he totally had that jazz solo put there so he could just riff off whatever he felt like. I'm pretty sure he didn't riff what he wrote in the song, but it sounded great and I was so impressed how quickly a stadium went from hyped pop concert into a classy jazz concert because of his jazzy solo. He just went off on his keyboard and it was amazing.
One of my favourite things about your videos is seeing how excited you get when first hearing a fantastic piece of music - it's pure unadulterated joy. Sadly, there's a lot of jealousy and backbiting in the music industry, so seeing your genuine appreciation for a fellow musician's work is really refreshing. Don't ever stop being you!
I know this a jazz pianist reaction but as a singer I absolutely LOVE the vocals on this track. Puth isn't the best singer out there but the melodies he comes up with, the harmonies, the flow, is just absolute FIRE, so so good. You know its a great pop song vocally when you immediately want to try out the runs and harmonies that he does in a song. I know I have a lot of fun singing along to this song and trying all sorts of different harmonies. Also how cool is it that underneat that piano solo, the three part harmonies served as the base. So so good. This is my favorite song of his.

Charlie Puth wrote with Daryl Hall & John Oates. “Slow It Down” sounds like Hall & Oates’ I Cant Go For That (hence where Charlie may have gotten some influence for the song’s sound/groove).
You actually explain how to play songs better than most videos that are actual tutorials. I think your camera setup also helps because we can clearly see your hands. Thanks a lot!

What about deconstructing 'With the love in my heart' ? 😂😂😂
YES MAKE CHARLES SEE THIS i wanna see him try
Charlie Puth wrote with Daryl Hall & John Oates. “Slow It Down” sounds like Hall & Oates’ I Cant Go For That (hence where Charlie may have gotten some influence for the song’s sound/groove).
Love your videos! You are so educational! I would recommend Jacob Collier, “All I Need” ft. Mahalia and Ty Dolla$
I was blown away when I first listened to this tune.
charlie the man keeping the keyboard solo alive.
definitely one of my favorite songs
You should react to his new song Girlfriend
You actually explain how to play songs better than most videos that are actual tutorials. I think your camera setup also helps because we can clearly see your hands. Thanks a lot!
Can u do more charlie Puth
I share ur love for his music and would love to hear more of what u think
Thanks for listening and adding the chords on the screen!!! Awesome
Me: Has no idea how music really works and doesn't know to much about it
Charles: Talks about melodies and chords
Me: I never knew music could be so interesting to learn about.....
Thanks so much for the solo transcription on screen! Saved me about 35+ listens
