I live aboard my DeFever 44 sundeck trawler and find that I use my sundeck more than any other part of my boat. Upper helm is used 99% of the time underway.

@@NoRegretsLifestyle Which engine package does your DeFever have, Ford, Perkins or John Deere? Does the Westerbeke generator have an after market electric raw water pump? That saves a lot of headaches when you have to change the original design rubber impeller.

Hi Paul! I love your content and have learned a lot from you. I recall watching one of your many videos where you spoke of semi-displacement hulls so you can cruise a bit faster than a typical 8kts trawler. I thought you said this was your favorite style since I thought you said they cruise closer to 12-15kts. Can you please share an example or two I can research for this type of trawler? Thanks!

I love my 35 foot Ponderosa sundeck. The main advantage from my perspective is having a nice big aft State room with the walk around queen and also having the covered after deck. I spent a great deal of time in my zero gravity chair on my aft deck. This is my third boat in all of my boats have had covered aft decks with my present boat having three 200 W solar panels mounted on the hard cover. No need for a generator.

In this series, can you talk about the advantages and disadvantages of fiberglass and aluminum hulls? It seems like a lot of the trawlers in the northwest are aluminum. That said, you do not see too many down south.

I'm no expert but I only see disadvantages with both fiberglass and aluminum. Fiberglass has a lifespan and will want to delaminate in time . same with aluminum, simple chemistry has it that aluminum dissolves in seawater.
Ships are made of steel. The strongest, longest lasting and easiest hull material to repair.

From I've been reading on all the forums, FB groups, etc. getting insurance is a major problem on these older boats. Best advice is to talk to an agent about a boat BEFORE you make an offer. It may save you $$$.

I am in the process of buying a hershine 48 cockpit MY. I will be putting a steering station, thruster controlls and throttles in the rear cockpit for easy manuvering and docking.
On a side note. I saw the amazon review you left about that solar system you bought. I was afraid it was going to be junk, but i didnt want to rain on your parade. A good way to tell a good panel is to look at the amps produced. A good 100 watt panel will produce about 6 amps. A good 200 watt panel produces about 12amps. If you are looking at 300 watt panels, but they only produce 6 amps, i would avoid them.

unusual to see a boat 'expert' not using correct marine terminology...'kitchen' ( galley ) 'bedroom' ( cabin ) 'driving station' ( wheel house or pilot house ) 'bathroom' ( head ) and so on. The boat with the Portuguese bridge wasn't a very practical blue water boat. The side deck walkways had no hand rails and nowhere to hold on along the cabin top. I wouldn't feel safe walking along the sides of that boat in any kind of rough weather. But other than that, an interesting look at typical aged trawlers in the States.
