  • How do you get the audience engaged, ask good questions, create a safe environment, and overall lead a strong morning report? I recently gave a morning report that I feel like I could have done better on, and it got me thinking - what are the key ways to improve in order to give a great morning report?

Have you tried incorporating Zerg strategies into your morning reports?
Kidding, I just re-discovered your UA-cam channel. I used to watch your streams all the time back in the early SC2 days. Glad to see med school worked out and you're still making awesome content! 😃

What strategies have you seen that have worked well in morning report? What is your opinion on cold calling? Curious to hear your thoughts :)

I think cold calling is the way to go. I do not understand if there are any cons with this strategy. Morning report is an ideal setting for it. (For example, it isnt feasible to cold call in a bigger setting like grand rounds, and things like slido work better for engagement with it)
Also, sometimes lack of engagement is just about the audience and not the presenter.

Really appreciate you putting out this video, Dr. Liu! My favorite morning report presenters were ones who introduced the case in a very open ended way. They'd start off with a blank whiteboard or pretty barebones intro slide and just present the patient is if they were taking their H&P. They'd ask the audience what they would want to do if they were managing the patient (what labs, imaging, etc) and having a list of running diagnoses. That typically encourages a lot of participation (otherwise the case wouldn't go anywhere!). Sometimes they'd break into small groups and discuss, sometime's they would just open it up to everyone if they wanted to keep everything flowing. If things weren't going in the direction they planned, it's not necessarily the wrong direction as it might uncover a different approach, but the presenter would also give hints or add their thoughts throughout the case as well to get things back on track. It makes the audience as a whole feel more invested if they are in control as opposed to an individual being called on directly (they might be having an off day or may not know this piece of information). Save the pimping for rounds imo haha. I think just giving the audience time and acknowledging any response whether or not it was necessarily correct creates for a productive and inviting learning atmosphere.

I personally dont like cold calling. These are couple things that I think we can do to improve:
      1. Make sure to have max 3 main clinical qs that we want to answer, so it wont be dragging too much.
      2. Start with easy question, so the crowd will start to have confidence in answering the qs.
      3. When it comes to the main clinical qs, and there was no answer to the crowd, give multiple options choice, people will have more confidence if there are options.
Once the crowd is more confident, I think it will lead to more engagement.
By the way are you still playing starcraft?? Lol

Through this video, I gained a lot of concepts about asking questions and realized that questions don't just randomly come up to mind. When I received your questions, I thought thank goodness, not so difficult especially when I was trying to fully understand the coming information. You also helped me by asking further questions, which made me feel relaxed and helped remember. I still remember the medications for necrotizing fasciitis. Also thank for providing the opportunity to engage.
For the challenge questions (I'm not sure if that's cold calling), they might not only for the audience but also for speakers who want some brainstorming. From my view, I would like to have when I can catch up speaker’s thought flow (this might be one of aspects of assessing the group dynamic). Discussing something I never thought about excites me. Or asking as take-home questions can also stimulate thinking, and speakers might get someone to discuss later if they're interested.

Thank you for the very nice comments today Di! Hope you are doing great. I feel like I should have asked you better questions when you were working with me! I also think I probably spoke too quickly. Maybe we'll have another chance to work together in the future! :)
