Thank you, good video! It makes sense to buy your hiking clothes at the end of winter or in summer sale. Then you often get expensive high end outdoor clothes 30 to 50 percent cheaper.
Wore fleeces from when they first came out in the 80s. How revolutionary they seemed. Now, as a lady of a certain age, I’ve found that hot flushes makes all synthetics, even breathable fabrics, suddenly feel like being wrapped in suffocating plastic bags. Not good in the middle of a hike! I’ve gone back to wool and have a system of merino layers topped off with the most amazing fjällräven jumper - a pricey item but one I wear every day. Each to their own but thank you for a useful review of what’s out there.
You’re most welcome Catherine. Layering is very much a personal choice and it’s good to know you’ve found a system that works well for you. I am the opposite as I run cold so tend to wear warmer base and mid layers.
Great information and comparisons. We always have a tough time deciding what to wear when we are going out hiking as you never know how the weather will turn when you get out there. Thanks for sharing your tips.
Great tips again Anthony, think I might explore synthetics this year, I’ve never owned one but I like the idea of having a bit more weather protection especially when it’s raining as there’s nothing worse than a wet down jacket! Really helpful video, cheers! 👍
Thanks Alex. I’d highly recommend investing in a synthetic jacket. It’s getting harder to tell the difference between down and synthetic these days. I prefer not having to worry about the weather and pulling out the waterproofs every time it rains. I love my down coats too but tend to wear them to football matches (when we could actually watch them live that is!)
I will use this video as a reference for my friends and family when they ask me what clothing options they should use! Very informative! My personal preference for a mid layer truly varies on the conditions outside. If I HAD to choose just one, I would probably go with the synthetic mid-layer.
In my early teenage walking days I was a definite fleece dude. I still have lightweight fleecy pullovers but in recent years have been a convert to down jackets. Saying that, I might explore the synthetic option next time as I don't put enough effort into keeping my down garments dry and often come unstuck. Nice one Anthony. ATB, Chris
I’ve switched to synthetic for hill walking these days just because our weather is so unpredictable. I tend to use my down coat for watching football, when it was allowed that is! So much easier to look after too with the washing etc. I do love wearing down though. So warm and snuggly 🤣
Great video and well explained. I've been fleece up to now and hot a down jacket just before Christmas but definitely leaning towards synthetic moving forward.
Thanks Ian. Glad you found it useful. You won’t go far wrong with a decent synthetic jacket. Saves having to bother with an outer layer unless it’s really cold and raining heavily. Thanks very much for watching 👍
Hi Anthony, another plus for the synthetic over down is ease of washing/drying (apologies if you did mention that). For wild camping, I've been using a really thin fleece plus a packable synthetic insulated jacket. Very flexible in the ways you can use it, warm, light, packable and cheap. Might need to invest more for middle of Winter camping though! All the best👍
Good shout Des. I did forget to mention that which was annoying as I’d added it my notes which I took to refer to! The faff involved in washing down is definitely a pain. We tend to was ours as soon as spring is over, ready to hang in the wardrobe until the next winter
Good video Anthony, I have a down jacket but it only gets used on dry days really, perhaps if stopped in good weather. Rarely use it in bad weather with an outer. My usual go to are my R1 fleeces, love them!
Thanks Joe. I’m the same with down these days as it very rarely stays dry when I go out! can’t beat a nice fleece. I tend to wear mine on really cold days as it’s so warm when under a shell. Thanks very much for watching 👍
Another straight to the point and informative video. Lauren has a Regatta fleece and although it is comfortable it's not very thick. Lou doesn't own a fleece but wouldn't mind getting one of those work out zip up jacket things.
Thanks Lou. I’ve had many a fleece over the years. They are so comfortable to wear aren’t they? I do like my synthetic insulation these days though purely because it blocks the wind so I don’t have to always wear a shell over the top. Hopefully, I’ll actually be able to wear them in the hills again soon 🙂

Thanks Ceri and Kat. Lily has just about forgiven me for making her stand around filming in those Baltic conditions last weekend 🤣🥶. I had 3 layers with me so I was love and warm 😆
Yo Tony! Most of the time I am wearing fleece as midlayer (under a softshell). I have serveral some thicker some thinner. Gotta admit that they arent as breathable as I want them to be. This is why I tend to run hot if I am very active. Try to search for Colin Haley Clothing System. There's a post where he discribes a lot about his layering "style" and why he chooses to layer that way. He's the reason why I am planning to try out insulated more warm midlayer jackets with a windjacket as an outershell. It's a recommended read :) Keep your videos coming. I like them.
Thanks very much for watching and for the recommendation. I'll certainly check out Colin Haley as i'm always looking for ideas to improve. If you like fleece and want something a bit more breathable, it's well worth looking up Polartec fleece fabrics. They are a bit pricier than a traditional fleece but offer a lot more breathability. Appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment 👍
Another helpful video Anthony and great work by Lilly the cameraman 👍 You’ve got some great kit there. I can just imagine for this video you had Lilly wearing a rucksack with all your mid layers in running around after you like a packhorse 😂 My go to mid layer is my Montane Protium hoodie. Highly recommended if you haven’t tried one. I get very warm very quickly when out walking, especially when wearing a rucksack as it kind of gives you extra insulation on your back. The protium is quite light and slim fitting and does a great job of pulling moisture away from your body. Was virtually never off my back during my Scotland trip. Keep up the good work. I look forward to the next video. Cheers Rob
Haha. She has to earn her keep somehow 🤣. I’ll look at the Montane hoody you suggested, although I do need to stop buying more hiking gear (says my wife!) I feel the cold though so often go for a warm mid layer this time of year
Thanks Ben. Layering is such a hard science I find as the climate over here is so unpredictable. I feel the cold more than most too so I tend to go for warmer layers. I think trial and error is the key which ends up costing money. I’ve got a few mid layers now which I’ve built up over the years so I can adapt to the conditions etc. You’ll perfect it over time. I’d always rather be a bit too warm than cold though

good show, good series of shows.the mid layer, the 3 layer system.Hmm not a simple as i first thought.Sometimes the mid layer is the outer layer, sometimes the mid layer is in a samdwhich of 5 layers.Does it matter that downs major flaw is getting wet,but that should matter as a waterproof outer layer is at hand. Its more a can we predict the weather,or do we carry a rucksack with 2 or 3 layers in it along with our flasks of tea ? a fleece/mid layer can only be the outer on a good day, down can be mid or outer layer.Maybe the mid layers needs broke down further into 2 or 3 parts light/middle and heavyweight mis layers ? waterproofs can only be the outer layer, but then ya get to the top of a mountain, sit down for a cuppa tea, pull out another bigger down or synthetic jacket for over top.Does the waterproof now become the "inner outer layer" or is it still an outer ? sorry im confussing myself.
Oh dear. Sounds like I’ve confused you. Sorry about that. Although layering can be complicated, in its simplest form it’s 3 layers ( a base layer, a mid layer as described in this video and an outer layer) The down and synthetic jackets can be worn without an outer layer if that makes sense as they have wind protection. Down should never be worn in heavy rain unless it’s protected by a waterproof outer shell. Hope that makes sense.
For reasons that you've covered, I have very rarely worn a fleece on a walk for several years now. I've only ever bought affordable one and find them to be anything but breathable. Trying merino baselayers presented my first step away from the fleece and I tend to wear synthetic layers on top, when required.
