YES❤ I watch GA everyday (reruns on Saturdays). Love and appreciate everything she and her family does❤❤❤Thank you and bless you and everyone who also views this incredible family❤❤❤
I was looking at glazed saucers at my local garden center and they’re quite costly for what they are. I did spray some several years ago and your right it’s hard to tell whether or not they’re glazed. I think that I’ll be buying the glaze in the can, that way I can put on a heavier coat of sealant and know that they’re sealed. Thank you for reminding me that I can make my own and save a few $. 🥶❄️💚🙃
Thanks for the reminder! Every year you probably feel like some videos are repetitive and they are. However, it’s great for the newbie’s but also for those of us that have watched for years. Sometimes it’s a reminder of things we need to do like this one or a refresher course on other things. The best part for me is your timeline on projects that I can follow to keep myself organized in my own garden! Thank you!
Seeing the "itty bitty" baby radish was so awesome! There is just something so calming and life giving whenever I watch "Garden Answer" even if it's sealing clay saucers! Thank you. And enjoy the week with family as you celebrate Benjamin and Samantha's birthdays!!!!
I have sealed my terra cotta since the 80"s. I use a concrete sealer. It is thinner in consistency, but I put it on thick. It has worked great for me and I still have and use the original container. :-)
How did I miss your original video on this - I've been watching you since you started! I'm so happy you covered this again. I love tera cotta but it can hard to find glazed saucers. As always, thank you for sharing your know knowledge, creativity and passion for gardening! You continue to inspire me to try new things in the garden. Over the years my yard as gone from boring to beautiful.
I like how she lays everything out and goes down the line like an assembly line, it's so efficient and organized! I noticed she does that when planting bulbs, seeds, and plants, etc, and her technique just seems to leave hardly any mess. love it!
Laura, would you consider using a plant identification tag to simply write a date on and stick it in the planter ( like the rectangular pot you planted the radishes in) pot? Perhaps date the back of the planter ID tag with the name on the front. 😊
The comment section of your videos is so wholesome I love looking at what everyone writes. God bless y’all, gardeners are neat people. (Love a gardener😂)
Oh wow I am so excited to learn how you did this! I have been unable to find glazed saucers. Thanks for sharing this with us! (Those pots are also my favorite!)
Be glad you haven’t found any glazed saucers! They are beautiful and tempting but so so very expensive. The place I found near me that was selling them had them priced higher than the pots! It is leagues more economical to seal your own. You can buy a can of sealant for the same price as a single glazed saucer, and use the sealant to seal dozens and dozens of saucers.
ahhh, what a good reminder!! part of my winter/spring cleanup is to clean off my pot shelves and organize them (how do things always get so unorganized, hahaha)... i made a note to pull out my saucers and have a glazing morning 🥰 doesn't matter if i saw this before or not, i still love getting the info and reminding me that i should do that!!! 🥰❤thanks for the video!!! 🥰❤
Hi Laura, I have been watching videos for years and it ALWAYS amazes me that you never roll up your sleeves when doing similar things to this 😄 I roll up my sleeves even when I carry things 😆 Hi from Serbia, love seeing you got our spruces over there 😎
Thank you for all your videos Laura. I have been learning so much from you. Using water jugs for planting seedlings, how to set up drip systems, how to make Christmas decorations with pine cones, how to seal terracotta. The list goes on and on . Thank you so so much for all that you have taught me. I know that you have heard this before, but you and your family have become a part of my daily life. We share so many of the same interests and it's so heartwarming seeing such a loving and wholesome family interacting with one another. In a world where there is a plethora of choices for entertainment I choose to watch Garden Answer not only for your teaching but for the values that you and your family model . God bless.
Besides offering the thinned radishes to the chickens, you can wash them in a strainer and eat them alone or topped on a fresh salad. They taste wonderful. They are essentially the "big brother of microgreens".
I picked up a terra cotta pot and matching saucer at Michael’s after Christmas, using my rewards, and was curious as to why the saucer was not glazed! I’m glad you mentioned that’s a thing…how silly! Now I’ll be on the hunt for that glaze so I can glaze it myself! Thanks for this very well timed video! ❤
I watched your initial testing of the saucers a few years ago, I immediately did mine as well. I don't have alot of terra cotta because they used to leak. But I do have some cute gray swirl pieces, so was tickled to solve that problem. I use the gloss for other things as well, but I have the same can too! I am surprised Russell didn't tiptoe thru the terra cotta ..🎵😸. Thank you for the great tip!
I tend to use the plastic saucers indoors because they won’t scratch furniture like the bottom of the terra cotta saucers will. Not as glamorous, but it works better for me! Love watching you and your daily projects!❤
🙌 I didn’t see this before, thanks for covering this again Laura. PS: Happy belated birthday to Samantha-Grace (12/1/24) and Happy birthday to Benjamin for tomorrow (16/1/24).
Suggestion- if you need to seal saucers again, you might want to try using a cake decorating turntable /lazy Susan to spin the saucer around as you glaze. I find them very handy and a lot faster. ❤
Some of us aren't so new to watching you, but REALLY APPRECIATE this video. Funny thing is I have to use mod podge to seal before I can spray seal, else it goes milky 😂😂 But glad I know what worked for you so I can try in future!!
Awesome! Thank you! I use the plastic saucers for the birds to drink from and always feel like it’s unhealthy but they need the water. Can I buy it in the U.S.?
Good morning! Quick & simple. I bought a couple of those same planters from Andrews just before Christmas. I will pick up some of that sealer and do the same thing. Always learn something from Garden Answer!!
I'm so glad that I caught you this morning! I never even gave thought to sealing my saucers myself! I've been wanting to find a large Terra cotta saucer for a while now, but they're expensive, so now I can just get a large regular one and seal it myself!! Don't know why I never thought of it!!😂! Thank you for all the information you share! ❤ stay warm!
Oo...what a great project 👍 I need to buy some Rustoleum Clear. I remember you doing this project years ago, but forgot about it. Great reminder. Happy Gardening Everyone 👩🌾 👍 ❤Peggy❤
I didn't even think about this. I've ruined so many surfaces. Dang! I'll have to get something to seal. I have been watching you for awhile now and resubscribed. I purchased a small greenhouse and am excited for the new growing season. Thank you for your very informative videos!
If they don't carry them, it's really easy to "age" terra cotta pots yourself and much less expensive than buying them that way... with a yogurt smear then set outside in the shade for a month; or with clay soil; or with water and sunlight (especially "hard water" which is kinda funny!) You can look up online lots of resources for "aging" terra cotta pots. 🙂
I looked up those pots online and by the looks of the comments, they are prone to cracking and falling apart. No wonder the shipment of smaller pots all came in broken.
This glazing video was awesome!!! Thank you for having repeated this video as I never saw the first one. I have a bunch of clay saucers that need glazing and now I can do it.
I like terracotta pots as well and they should have glazed saucers! Honestly! Thank you for sharing Laura! I remember the video where you tried several methods of sealing them but it's a great reminder. Have a blessed week 🤗🙏💞
This video is gold! It’s always nice to have an updated review. What type of preparation did you do before painting the saucers? Did you use any special soap or brush to clean them and how long did it take for them to be ready to apply the sealer. I probably should watch the other video to see if these questions are answered!
Thank you so much for the video! This was extremely helpful, I had even asked the local paint store what they thought would work, and they worried that the terricotta would absorb it, and not work... Also, showing the exact products! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Old pretty china plates are my preferred “saucer” - especially pretty with a gold or scalloped edge. I like re-purposing,using old when possible instead of buying new things
Years ago, I bought 100s of Terra cotta pots, of various sizes from a lady who had worked for a greenhouse business that had gone out of business. I use them for loads of things. I have to buy saucers as none came along with them. Thank you for this helpful hint.
Thanks for this repeat on glazing terra cotta saucers. Very helpful. Giving your chickens some snow reminded me of mine. They seem to like the freshness and coldness. 🐓🌨A handy tip that I do with saucers if they're used in the house on a table or counter to prevent scratching, is putting small round adhesive pads underneath, maybe 3 or 4 depending on the size of the saucer.
I always wondered about thinning radishes, I never knew how much or how little, so this video answers a question I have had for a long time. Thanks! Love the glaze too. These tasks may seem small, but I learn so much from everything you post, thanks!!!!
1. Make sure there is no residue on the clay and its absolutely dry all the way thru so the sealer doesnt react to lime deposits and or prevent adhesion or penetration into the clay. 2. Reapply every year as it will wear and needs a buildup coat over time. 3. Put stick on felt dots on the bottom of the saucer if you put it on a finished surface as the raw clay will scratch the finish.
Thank you so muchfor the tutorial on sealing the saucers and also on taking the felco pruners apart and cleaning them. So helpful. both jobs i need to do. Love your tutorials
This video gives me the itch to get things prepared for digging in the dirt again. Our state of Iowa just dug out from a 2 day blizzard with 40 mph winds and now our temperatures are -14 with wind chills of -30. One thing I like to add to clay saucers are rubber or felt pads to protect furniture from scratches. Especially if it’s a gift for a friend.
I found an "aging" process that works. Using Organic Garden Lime spread on, let dry and gently sand off areas to make it look natural. Found on "This Old House/gardening" For the saucers that you want to note they are sealed, just mark and X in the center.
Laura, you know Jack Barnwell came up with the Aquapots - maybe you could get some guidance from him on to develop your own line of pots with matching glazed saucers. You have your own auger - why not pots?
Until I saw your product test, I’d never heard of sealing saucers! In the low desert, I almost exclusively use terracotta pots. Thanks for another episode about saucers.
Now I know!! No more water ring damage to my furniture or deck. Interesting that the chick girls like snow over radish greens. Thank you Laura & Good job edit team. 😊😊
Thanks for repeats of your projects. I’ve only been watching for a few years, so I have missed a lot. I go back and watch your older videos and enjoy every one.
I was tuned in when you first showed us this trick years ago. I bought the can you’re using now and did several saucers with three thin coats each and it works great! I am going to do it again but I’ll wait until warmer weather so I can open the sliders in my sunroom for fresh air.
Totally understand as to why buy a saucer if it isn’t already glazed. I’m new to gardening and stuff, and bought a good size cyclamen plant this year. I bought a saucer because this plant is in the house. Did not realize it wasn’t glazed, and glad I caught it before the water made any damage on the counter top I have the plant. So thankful you did this video. Gotta get me some glaze.
The can is not cheap but the difference in the glazed and unglazed saucers is worth the cost of the can and will give many more uses. It is worth the money and time to save money in the long run. If I notice a pot that dries out faster than I like, I also glaze a wide band around the middle to slow down evaporation on that pot.
Funny. I recently looked up that old video because I was gifting amaryllis for Christmas and needed their saucers waterproof! I selected one of the spray on options you liked.
Thanks for this tutorial for I had not seen the previous one you did. All my local pot businesses do not have glazed saucers and I think of you! So now I know what to use and how to apply to my unglazed saucers!💚
Thank you! Anyone that has used the terracotta saucers will know exactly what you’re talking about. Usually after the damage has been done unfortunately
Great idea!! Even with the most careful watering, the unglazed saucers still allow moisture to collect underneath and ruin wood surfaces. Ask me how I know!! 😥 Love radish sprouts as garnish on almost anything! Lucky chickens! 🐔🐔🐔
Well, while watching this video I remembered sealing my granite and concrete once with a waterproof sealer. This was recommended to me by my contractor and it worked fantastic to repel water. I wonder if that would work on the terra cotta. This is one of those times when you give us another great idea that I just had never thought about.
Good refresher. I saw the other video, but much easier not to have to go back and look it up since I couldn’t remember which one you liked best. Thanks.
I ilke terracotta pots a long time ago I made a terracotta 4 tier container I took a metal pole with a metal base at the botton and when I placed the pots on the metal pole I tilted each one to the left and right and planted Hurbs In them
I have that same can of sealant that I purchased after watching the last saucer sealing video you posted - works so well! I also don’t bother taping them off, but my lines are a little less precise! 🥴
Thanks for the video! I watched your previous one comparing the five products; very helpful. I’m looking for something to seal my terra cotta pots on preparation for mosaics. The rustoleum should do the trick!
I jokingly tell my friends I would watch paint dry with Laura! Well, now it's true! Thank you for your creativity, enthusiasm, and variety!
YES❤ I watch GA everyday (reruns on Saturdays). Love and appreciate everything she and her family does❤❤❤Thank you and bless you and everyone who also views this incredible family❤❤❤
That's funny
I also put 4 spaced out self stick felt “dots” on the bottom of terra cotta pots to prevent any scratches on surfaces.
Good idea!
I totally agree. For all pot makers out there, all pots need saucers and all saucers should be waterproof.
I was looking at glazed saucers at my local garden center and they’re quite costly for what they are. Maybe you could just use a sharpie to mark the inside of the saucer ("S" for sealed) before using the sealant?
@@ritasicari7518funny, I had the same thought.
Haha, the chickens might be looking for meal worms. They might eat the radish seedlings after you leave.

As long as they’re bone dry and dirt and debris removed is all you need to do.
Back in the day, I used to make decorative paintings on Terra cotta. Sealing them prior was a must. It’s easy and fast and held up beautifully
Remember thinking I need to do that too. I forgot but now I put it on my To do list! 😊
Thank you Laura for showing this again, it's very much appreciated! Have a wonderful week! Kathy 💜Ontario, Canada

Good Morning! ❄️ I started sealing my Terra Cotta saucers after I watched your original video! The radishes look good! 🙂💚🌱
This video gives me the itch to get things prepared for digging in the dirt again. Our state of Iowa just dug out from a 2 day blizzard with 40 mph winds and now our temperatures are -14 with wind chills of -30.

Laura, you know Jack Barnwell came up with the Aquapots - maybe you could get some guidance from him on to develop your own line of pots with matching glazed saucers. You have your own auger - why not pots?
great helpful hint for those of us who love terra cotta !!!!
You are awesome Laura, I just bought some pretty terra cotta form IKEA and their saucers aren't glazed and now I can use it inside!
Love the patina on the terra cotta! That original video was nice and so is this one. How cute are the baby radish seedlings, looks like geraniums!

Just an FYI - they do sell the preferred Rust Oleum product used in a spray can as well if you don’t need much of it.

I wonder if that would work on the terra cotta. This is one of those times when you give us another great idea that I just had never thought about.
This is a great video, even for us oldie but moldy followers. Great to remind us of the winning product. 🧑🏻🦳
Never knew that about them 😮
Now I do...
Thanks..
Good refresher. I saw the other video, but much easier not to have to go back and look it up since I couldn’t remember which one you liked best. Thanks.
Have a great day Laura!💕
I ilke terracotta pots a long time ago I made a terracotta 4 tier container I took a metal pole with a metal base at the botton and when I placed the pots on the metal pole I tilted each one to the left and right and planted Hurbs In them
I have that same can of sealant that I purchased after watching the last saucer sealing video you posted - works so well! I also don’t bother taping them off, but my lines are a little less precise! 🥴
Stay warm friends!

Is it SPRING YET??????
Ask for a friend 🥱😏
Thanks for the video! I watched your previous one comparing the five products; very helpful. I’m looking for something to seal my terra cotta pots on preparation for mosaics. The rustoleum should do the trick!
