  • Transform ordinary terra cotta / clay planters into rustic wonders with this easy painting technique! Inexpensive & easy! (Video length to show more of the process).
    For outdoor use, varnish the planter interior & exterior to prevent the clay from absorbing moisture. Add felt stickers on planter bottoms to prevent scratching surfaces indoors.

      Thanks Nicqui! I'm loving the house! We are actually currently in the process of having some exterior work done on the house - new fascia/soffits (new wood in the old style - the old wood was in bad shape) & later this spring, new gutters (in the old style) & a new roof! I can't wait for it all to be completed! :)

    I always paint my new terra cotta planters with buttermilk mixed with water; and leave them outside for 48 hours ... and then they look beautifully aged & weathered.
    I never varnish/paint them with real paint as this will seal the pot ... The beauty of a terra cotta pot is that the material 'breathes' which is so much better for the plants.

      Hi Becky,
      Thanks! :) For artificial floral, no further finishes are really necessary. For real plants or exterior decorating, varnishing the inside & exterior will help protect the finish from weathering. They also sell saucers you could do this same technique to (or you could line the interior of the planter with a waterproof barrier).

    I am going to try it. It really is so contaigeous. Do you use acrylic paint? What kind ?
    Will it last outdoor, is it necessary to spray it at the end in order to protect the colors? Thank you.

    • @ChristopherHiedeman
      @ChristopherHiedeman  3 роки тому

      Hi Henny, I used acrylic paint in a variety of brands for these planters. If you are using these outdoors, I would seal the exterior and interior of the planter to make the finish last the longest :)

    @Christopher Hiedeman ... I've never tried this but really want to 'n I love the way yours turned out !!! BTW ... I recommend wearing gloves when handling spagnum moss ... it may have been just me, but I actually got an infection in my pinky fingernail from decorating with it in potted plants. Fortunately, it healed in about 48 hours after soaking my fingernail in a finger bowl with tea tree oil. Guess what else I advise? Wearing safety glasses when moving or tending to yucca plants because ... I once poked my eye while moving one in my home office. Again, fortunately, my eye recovered nicely and quickly but according to my eye doctor it has a tiny scar on it from the ... "angry attack" !!! I actually have manious plant incidents ... but I shall spare you !! ෴🐇෴

    Christopher, I have two outdoor Terra Cotta pots which were bought over a decade ago and were previously painted and sealed with a multi-color pattern and are showing wear and tear. All of the videos I have seen is in regards to painting Terra Cotta pots without any existing color and they start with a white color wash and so on. What procedure are steps would you suggest for those who are trying to repaint Terra Cotta pots like mine? Thanks again for any suggestions

    • @ChristopherHiedeman
      @ChristopherHiedeman  3 роки тому

      Hi George, because your planters are already sealed the results might turn out a little different than mine but you might be able to achieve a very similar look if you first painted the planter a solid terra cotta color, let the paint dry completely, and then follow the steps in this video. You'll have to make sure you use a paint (the terra cotta color) that holds up to moisture so that when you start applying the white wash it doesn't remove the terra cotta paint color. Because your sealed planters are impermeable to the watered down paint, you might try watering the paint down a little bit less because the planter won't soak up the color but you will still get the ability to have the color washed look and be able to remove the excess until you achieve the desired finish. :)

    Love this! Have two questions for you: Does the finished pot have to sit out in the sun for a few days/weeks to “cure” before you put flowers in it? Do you have to seal the paint with a clear coat spray before using? Thank you!
