    Build a hinge where the new sections can fold down, so you can still get in and out. Best of both worlds shouldn’t be hard to fab a hinge and latch

    I like the new concept I would definitely do it but I will make those new panels that you have of cardboard right now on a hinge so you do still have good access to get in and out of the car and also to remove the backseats
    Put a hinge and lock

      i was gonna comment to make the panels removeable so he can still pull the seats out but your idea with the hinges will solve that problem I thought of is how to get in and out easy, safe, and fast enough incase of emergency.

      Exactly do it with some quick release fasteners or some shit so you can still rip the seats out if you need to, or even on a hinge if getting in and out is the concern

    Removable for sure. I’d do it so the extra metal on the bottom of the windows pivots on the bottom and can lock back up when you guys are in it. Still easy to get into and it’ll look way better. 🤙🏻

    I always looked at this as a functional vehicle so I didn’t really think it mattered much but yes it will make it look better, as long as you can keep the functionality.
    What I think gives it a slightly quirky look is the upward kink on the hood, it goes up from the bottom of the front window and forward to the front of the car, it may be how a trophy truck looks but imo it looks wierd.
    Then again who cares as long as it’s a fun ride... and it looks like it is. 😁👍🏻

    I love how you're able to remove your ego from this project. You were able to take peoples advice and try out suggestions you disagreed with then admit that you were wrong in some ways (and right in others). Plus you gave yourself an honest report card without rose colored glasses. We need some more of that on UA-cam 😅. Awesome build, even if it's a little ugly being able to give your wife and kid a small taste of your passion makes it an A+++ build in my book. 👍

    The front window hatches/panels can flip downwards on hinges, with rubber stops to keep it from moving, and latches both for open and closed (up) positions. The rear panels can flip up on top of the roof, also use rubber stops and latches to lock in place either up or down. The netting only needs hooks like caribiners (locking hooks with a spring loaded part)👍 And yes, paint them orange but add your names as "Driver", "CoDriver", "Navigator" 😅👍

    Instead of making that sheet metal, make the lower section of the window netting solid fabric so it still gives the illusion of filling that space! • @joell439
    @joell439 4 роки тому

    Austin, I love it the way it is - quirky and forever memorable. But if you do mod it, do everything you can to keep the functionality you have now with the big entrance openings. Therefore, it must be something hinged. Removable panels completely defeats the extra effort as you'll quickly become annoyed with installing them after getting in....... and then you just leave them off. The nets look cool, but the visibility you showed us without the nets was amazing. As your wise better half stated, who cares what it looks like when you're inside it. The view of the scenery going by is the whole reason to be outside. By the way, there's no way your should have got a D in math and science. I guarantee you that your HS teachers would be so proud of you. Glad those crappy grades didn't hold you back from life's adventures you clearly excel in. Joel....

  • @timgilbert3051

    If it were me, the one aesthetic change I would make would be to lower the front half of the front fiberglass. Picture cutting a ^ shaped cut on each side of the fiberglass just forward of the front axle, then tilting the part the front most part down about 3 inches, trimming the bottom-front edge of the fiberglass by the same amount.
    The reasons are that it would equalize the spacing between the body on the forward and rearward sides of the front tires, and it would stop Miles from looking like it's sagging in the middle. And as a bonus it would give a little bit more visibility close-in as you approach rocks or other obstacles that need careful navigation.

    You’re creativity with the build was amazing🤙. I did see the oddball shape but I wasn’t about to criticize the artist on his motives. I was however shocked at the difference the possible changes could have. They make the overall look so much better 👌. I do like the ideas in the comments about hinges & you could maybe add some soft rubber material to do away with vibration after latching in place from the inside 😎. But 👍 on a awesome build.

  • @javman03
    @javman03 4 роки тому

    Definitely add the lower portion of the sheet metal, I wouldn't add the upright piece to narrow the rear window though. Leave it open to take in the views. I would also leave the window nets off unless you are really planning to get wild with it. But I would definitely add more orange on the side of it. Not just relying on the window nets to add color. I think it would be worth making the new pieces you add not only removable, but hinged with latches, basically funny little doors. But that would still keep the ease or entry, and ability to remove the seats. While still vastly improving the looks of it from the outside. Just my 2 cents worth! I've definitely enjoys the build though.

  • @HighRollinBlazer
    @HighRollinBlazer 4 роки тому

    I like it as it is. The added difficulty of getting in and out, and the safety of exfiltrating in case of a rollover make it hard to justify the amount of time it would take to remake everything. My personal opinion is that as one-off as the vehicle is as well as the functionality make the looks unique, not pure ugly. BUT! If you don't like it, it is your vehicle to make as you like it. I also think that having people inside help fill in the large window void.

      @@eriknulty6392 100%. One issue I do see is that I stupidly moved the motor too far back and limited myself with driveshaft angle. I was trying to make it fun on the street and dirt and shoulda just focused on the dirt.

    • @eriknulty6392
      @eriknulty6392 4 роки тому

      @@AustinCoulson I see your point. BUT...I think you may be surprised how much travel you could still get out of that driveshaft. given a lot of that travel will be upwards. the droop will be limited. Maybe a c-notch in the frame rails, limit strap the droop and FOR SURE some large hydro bump stops. you could probably wrestle 8'' down and 10'' up travel. for a grand total of 18 inches. if you tinker with the shim stacks in the rear shocks 14''-18'' of travel can feel really nice. my prerunner only has 18'' of travel in the rear and I pre-ran the entire 2018 baja 500 course. its ALL ABOUT TUNING SHOCKS. well that and having triple bypass to give a highly progressive, tunable zones. but I would say in the entire 500 miles offroad I only hit bump stops a handful of times. tune, tune and tune again. when you are working with limited numbers you need to use high quality shit. so forget about your self imposed budget and build a fun trophy wagon you can beat on for many years to come. like I said the hard part is already done.

    I'm in my mid 40's now, and I'm not as agile as I once was, So the wide open easy access windows win hands down as far as I'm concerned. :)
    One thing though, You seriously NEED to fit some grab handles to the bars above the windows. When going for it on rough ground it's way too easy to brace yourself by grabbing that bar with your fingers around the outside of the roll cage. If you start to roll it takes a huge amount of will power to let go of that support, and many people have lost fingers/hands because they kept hold of the side of the roof when the worst happens. Having grab handles removes the temptation to have your hand outside of the safety cage.

    I wouldn't add the door panels to make it look nicer. If you did add them could you still call it Fugly Miles if you added something that wasn't functional? Also in the event of a rollover it would take longer to escape the vehicle. I know you're thinking about what others think, however they aren't the ones having to contort themselves in and out of it. Beautiful build and I (along with many others) am quite envious of you're build. Keep up the great work!

      This is kind of a catch-22, it would take longer to get out, but it would also help keep your arms and head inside with the netting. Overall it would be a net plus for safety since it already has a fuel cuttoff switch in a rollover or impact

    I agree it does look like its bent in the middle. I like the look of the construction paper, but think the back window is small. I think you should remove the square paper but leave the lower paper for the back window. It is a cool build either way!

    As of this comment, I haven't seen the vidfeo, but gotta say, I've loved the entire series! I binged it in two days lol, but I've loved watching it, and I've learned a ton, never having worked on a car before, and I loved the editing and everything! Just watched all the videos, cool build and that k you for sharing. I like the new design, what about Gul wing half doors with a hydraulic shock to hold them up when open and a quick release latch to hold closed. Easy to remove and still easy to get into.

    You could add a rub rail like on a dirt race car so she can step up higher to crawl in and out. It looks great with the new windows and window nets !!!

    I say do it! The doors ended up so short because of how much got cut off the bottom. I always like the fastback look but that’s probably more trouble than it’s worth!

    Wifey is right 100% - its not a huge difference appearance wise
    & IMO more importantly- being able to easily get into and out of the cab will become more of a pain if you raise those door/window lines.
    IF you are going to make permanent changes with tubing and sheet metal work added to the fiberglass body just for "looks" why not make the front door area (between the A & B pillars) hinged to open like normal truck doors? I know it would be a lot of modifying and additional fab work, but very useful and practical.
    & yes to adding in the window nets whatever you decide to do - as you saw in your trip with the red f150 down in that gulch, roll overs can happen in a blink- gotta keep that family safe!
    To your comment on the travel of the front Coil-overs; Have you considered making custom long travel front control arms ?

    • @AustinCoulson
      @AustinCoulson  4 роки тому +1

      I've thought a lot about custom a-arms and I might do it, but so far I have enjoyed seeing what I can get out of the stock arms. If I do them, I'll do the uppers first since they are my limiting factor.

    You need a shield in front of the engine and electrics to protect them from rocks and branches that flick up and take out the wiring or belts .
    The sound on the trail videos has a lot of metal on metal noise like there are no bushes in the suspension.

    They call remote control cars trophy truck's at least you have something more substantial then that. I think you did an awesome job for the way you built it on the fly and under $5000. They only way really to improve it would have been to designed it first. Great work

    I just watch all of the vids in a row. and I will say that if I was building it the looks would been different. but that said even if it is ugly, its why you built it that really is the choice. if you made it for you or for the audience. What I am not a fan of is the light blue paint. I like the orange. but I would have camo painted this beast and made it as a hunter that has orange on his vest and hat so keeping some orange. now understand that I an not a Blue oval fan and I watched it all. you are a talented man. and your son will have great memories. now what if you made mini doors? so they open to have the opening. and yet when in use they would look better. a bar one a hinge that is covered in fiberglass. keep the nets. as for a window. I would make one for the times you are in a group. so you don't eat dirt. and can be removed with ease. I think you should have added some storage under the seats so you could have a cooler to hold water bottles. out in the desert like that. you would appreciate some water if you had a long walk.... That bump stop you need to fix it with a non bullet shape unit. what happens is that it rolls off the edge. you need something flat. Things you done right. light colors on the roof. as it does keep it cooler by 30%. don;t forget your open roof like that is like a wing. it can add lift or push down. In dirt race cars an old trick is to not welt the roof down so in the corners you get some lift from the air pressure switch so to turn more on a dime. them side wall on the back will also act as fins like and airplane. you should be aware of the belts also catching rocks on the front of the engine.

    I think the vehicle looks great either way each in its own way, without the new panels it reminds me of a wacky races truck which I love but the window size being smaller makes it more proportional.
