    If a baking mix/pancake mix has baking powder already in it, you'll find it will not rise as the product ages. But, don't throw it away. When it comes time to use it, just add some fresh baking powder to it and it will work just fine. Just add enough for the size of the batch you are making. You can also make baking powder from baking soda & cream of tartar.

    If I were you, AP, I would just keep making occasional videos just like this, because no matter how many of these types of videos with this same subject matter of yours I've watched, I ALWAYS learn a little something more. You are a very good teacher because not only do you provide very detailed instruction along with actually showing how you do something, but you elaborate on some very interesting and important facts in addition to the topic as well. Your channel is a very good resource because of this factor alone, let alone for other reasons, too. Thanks AP! Drummer Girl out.

    When you open the pancake mix you may find it will not rise. The reason is, the baking powder can go flat. Baking powder has a short life time. I suggest storing baking soda and cream of tartar. 1 teaspoon of baking soda and 2 teaspoons of cream of tattar = 1 tablespoon baking soda. If you keep cream of tartar dry it will last for years.

    • @gman21266

    • @lindael2
      @lindael2 2 роки тому +7

      @@gman21266 I have found when you try to add new baking powder it made the pancake have a strong taste of the baking powder. I found the same with biscuit mix. But I found I could use the pancake mix with white flour and it worked fine in bread. If you have white flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, lard, ghee, or shorting, and powdered eggs you do not need the biscuit or pancake mix. I suggest to people that they look for old cook books that have instructions for cooking from scratch.

    Basics everyone should store: White flour, shorting powder, powder egg, sugar, beans, molasses, yeast (keep in freezer) baking soda, cream of tartar, corn meal, dry milk, oats, apple vinegar, white vinegar . If you have nothing else store those items. You can make white bread, oat bread, corn bread, biscuits, pancakes, baked beans, boiled beans add a little vanilla and you can bake a cake. (2.5 or 3 gallon would be better, i wonder if they exist?) Anyway, then i will store all those 1 gallon bags in the bucket. With the pancake mix and other mixes the baking powder in it will loose it's potency over time. If you keep baking soda and cream of tartar in your storage you can make your own baking powder to add to any mixes that have lost their poof. Take one part baking soda to 2 parts cream of tartar and you have baking powder. My understanding is that these 2 items when kept separately are shelf stable indefinitely.

    I immediately vacuum seal my jars of unused 02s because some of their 'power' will be used up letting them seal the jar. By vacuum sealing it asap, you keep the maximum strength intact. While I too love the convenience of ground flour, even stored in mylar with 02s, white and AP flour have a maximum storage life of 5 years. It won't be a matter of insects or mold but rather developing a stale, almost bitter, taste. You just don't know under what conditions and how long the flour sat in the warehouse or store before purchase. Whole wheat flours, because they contain more natural oil in the wheat germ, have even shorter mylar life. So definitely store only in package sizes you can use within those times. Or, better still, store whole wheat berries which have storage life close to 30 years and grind as needed. You'll need a grinder but you'll also discover a much fresher tasting flour.

    Hey community members. I ordered recipe books from people that lived thru The Great Depression. It tells stories, tips, and recipes. It helps you think of what ingredients we may need.The books are compiled by Rita Van Amber. Stories and recipes of the Great Depression of the 1930's. I think I found them on Amazon. I think I have 5 books in the series. The stories are very interesting and humbling.

If you look at the reviews people love them and I loved the first one I bought the rest. I didn't know how to link. They are older books. Highly recommend them. You may want to try and share some recipes as a suggestion. I think the tan/yellow covered one is the first one. I hope this helps.

    I spread dry bay leaf on the shelves of my pantry. I also put a couple of whole bay leaves in the containers that hold my pasta, rice, flour, pancake mix etc. The bay leaf will not effect the taste or smell of the product. Bay leafs are a deterrent to the bugs that plague our dry products in our home pantry. Once I heard about bay leafs effect on pantry and put this into practice, I’ve never had another problem with bugs in the last 5 years.

    Personally I would do smaller bags of pancake mix with oxygen absorber inside the bag then a large food storage tub with another oxygen absorber inside that for more long-term storage. Better would be to plan to use this and rotate your stock as flour, pancake mix xcetera will not last more than a few years. Stock and rotate. Great videos AP love how you share your knowledge.

So according to the professors after the 3DD food will be scarce for 3 years. There will be a warning for 2 days of darkness before so make sure you have the items that you need to survive during that.
