Speaking of air brakes, if the hoses had parted, the brakes would've gone into emergency and jammed hard on automatically, since train air brakes work via the REDUCTION of air pressure, i.e. the air in the brake pipe holds the brakes off, and any loss of pressure applies the brakes.
What gets me is they don't think to tie on the handbrakes, since the whees for 'em are staring them in the faces for the whole ride. Might not have the muscle of the air brakes, but they'd certainly slow the train, and would probably stpp it completely on that uphill grade at the summit. That's what they're there for, after all...
