  • this is a short video of a quern stone that i picked up at a yard sale .... it is shaped from solid granite ..
and i would estimate its age at somewhere round the 1840s.. at about that time it was illegal to own one!-- you were expected to buy your flour from the company mill ,,(thirlage ) and company men would break peoples querns to effect the monopoly ... it is hard to find any left in countrys like scotland
just on a green organic note fresh milled grain contains the wheat germ ... whereas factory produced flour the wheat germ , part is removed (the most healthy part ).. because it becomes rancid after 2 or three days ... therefore fresh milled grain is far more healthy
p.s. you woudnt want a mill stone round your neck

I'm a wife. I'm at home. I make stuff and cook for my husband and take care of the kids. Ain't nothin' wrong with that! :)

I get what you're saying, and understand the immediate tendency to gender these roles, but the truth is - with women being in the workforce and earning as well - either parent can stay home and provide stability to children. It ultimately boils down to the couple to decide what works best for them, but there's nothing wrong with a man helping care for children and rearing them. There's nothing wrong with women deciding that child care is not their forte - not all women are the nurturing (in the traditional sense of the role) mothers. Not all men want to be the sole breadwinners and prefer to care for their kids. That is society imparting roles which, I'm glad to see, is growing obsolete as people decide individually (as pairs) how their lives should be.
As to the race remarks... while I understand the fear, at the same time - if your descendants are "mating" with good hearted people, hard working people, decent people - does it matter if they are brown? I would think the more important thing would be creating a world full of decent human beings, no matter their skin color. Of course you know that skin color has very, very little to do with the genetic makeup of what makes us human, and has nothing to do with behaviors of entire "races" of people. I know for myself, as long as my progeny are loved by their partners, are rearing good, decent, upstanding citizens as I've tried to raise them... I could care less what their "packaging" looks like.

Per Widipedia (*you won't believe this!*),
"There was a legal requirement in Scotland for tenants to pay for use of the baron's mill. Early leases of mills gave to the miller the legal right to break quern-stones which were being used in defiance of thirlage agreements.[13]
*The obligations of thirlage eventually ceased to apply, but thirlage in Scotland was only formally and totally abolished on 28 November (Martinmas) 2004 by the Abolition of Feudal Tenure etc. (Scotland) Act 2000.*[14]
Similar requirements existed and were enforced actively in England.[15]

+CLASSICALFAN100 no fucking way......god blind me i am truly amazed.....yet somehow not surprized.....i heard something about welsmen and crossbows after dark....it amounted to legal murder and was only a recent change.....the only obscurity i know of is the canabalism at sea law which in new south wales was not ended till recent.....hanging in victoria only ende officially in the early eightys....like guillotines in france.
what a world......thanks for the info.

This is still quite common in the Philippines. They use it in making rice cakes. My aunt has one.

I want to try making bread in the simplest way possible. This video is very interesting.P.S. Does this method leave stone grit in the flour?

That find is worth one and a half ounces of gold, minimum. I'll bet it took a month of a man's life to make it.
