I bought 40 or so stone masonry hammers, spallers and picks last weekend including 3 old mill picks - delighted with my find. Really interesting to see these tools being used.

I found this after watching a craftsman in India build a hand cranked flour mill I was really impressed with. The mill was built for the set of bare stones, and I wondered about them. Thank you for sharing this, and doing what you do. I'm pretty floored by all the skill involved all around. It's beautiful, functional, art. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Seems like somebody could invent a tool to do the repetitive tapping and thereby relieving you of that stress. The device could be make to lightly tap with strength adjustment on the stone as you are doing. You would probably have to do a last minute clean up but it should be far easier.

There is a tool, we use an angle grinder ( small Milwaukee ) to grind lava rock stones 18" across which are used for grinding corn and making corn masa for tortillas. He could do the same it would take practice but he would learn how to hold the angle grinder and use it.

How often do you need to dress the stones? How many (bushels?Pounds) of _?_ between dressings? Or Does hardness of the grain make a difference? Or 'cleanliness' of grain? (dust, grit, etc.?)
What is first indication stones need dressing?- temperature of the flour?

It depends on how much the mill is used and wich kind of stone the mill stone is made of.
If the mill runns all day long, its around 10 days for soft stones and 3-4 weeks for hard stones.
So in a mill with 4 sets mill stones made of sandstone, dressing was a fulltime job, if one set was finish, the next set needed dressing

Stone quarries will cut stone with cnc equipment, or you can chisel one yourself from a shape that is close.
