Thanks for the review. Just bought the TP620 on Amazon for $26 which was the same price as the TP19. I'll take the free upgrade and a display that is great for old people...

Thanks John. I still love my Thermapen MK4 but can be a clutz and am always worried I’m going to drop it on a stone paver one too many time. Thermopro and the Javelin Pro have been in my head to consider getting as an alternative that won’t make me cry if broken.

I think I see a couple gifts for cooks in my family! Thanks for the test - I agree, it might not have the precision of a more refined test, but for my purposes, it shows the speed of the devices in a realistic scenario.

Yea.. real world testing is more useful to ME than scientific testing on these things. I am SURE that the published speed specs on these is done under a very controlled and favorable condition for fast read times. In the real world, one or two seconds one way or another is not a game changer.

I like this method of testing as well.

I was not sure if I should pay 10 more for the 19 over the 19h. Ill go with the 19h. I suspect the H has a longer battery life due to its less glowing display.

Just finished checking a bunch of chicken parts on a hot grill with a slower thermometer, and suddenly I could see the benefit of this :)

I've got a Thermapen MK4 and a very cheap Taylor thermometer that set me back $10. While the Taylor may be a tad slower it's just as accurate. It's maybe 2 seconds slower on a bad day. I may add TP19H to my collection and see how it compares. For me, the value just isn't there with the Thermapen and I wish I hadn't spent that much on it.

I have two or three $10 models around here from another brand that work well also. If you search for 'shootout' here on my channel you will find the video I did comparing a lot of different instant read thermometers....

@@ManCaveMeals That's a good video as well. Still leaning towards the 19H. Thanks for the videos.

Now that I watch this again, I see disparity in testing. Not only do the temps vary around 2 degrees for all pens from same mfg, it seems you crop off the reader and I can't see the functionality and complete temp reading. Additionally, You pull it out of the water so quickly that you can't confirm it is the final reading, and it could easily still be trying to find the final temp.
I bought the TP620 about a week ago with this review a big factor, however I am cooking on the Blackstone nightly. So far I am having mixed results. It does help me make a better steak/chicken, however I find myself watching and waiting for the final temp after inserting the thermometer. The claim is 2-3 seconds, but I believe it is more like 6 or 8. I know, still better than old school analog, however I lose confidence since I can watch it climb until it finally stops 6-8 seconds later, even longer. I do like the large digital reader and it works well until you get that angle where reflection voids it. Seems like an unreasonable complaint on the surface, but when you are trying to position thermometer and holding for 5 or more seconds over a 36" searing hot griddle, it can be annoying. I paid $29, so while I think it is par for the course at that price point, the normal price of $60 is not even close. So, while I probably will keep it, I imagine my frustration will force me to search for a better primary. So, save money where it makes sense; I am not sure this is it...

If your 620 is reading that slow you should contact thermopro and have them replace it. You should not be having that issue with it. The final numbers on the thermometer displays in my test are because I have the water temp in the sous videe bath set a degree or two above my 'target' temp. If I set it exactly at the temp I wanted to read. the thermometer may never get there since they are all mostly +/- 1 degree of accuracy. You have to have the bath temp slightly higher to guarantee it actually hits the temp. Bu9t I'm sorry of my review falls short for you. I tried, to the best of my abilities, to make these tests completely objective.

@@ManCaveMeals Hah, don't apologize for your test variables. There is always a different approach and I only picked those items out based on my thermometer seemingly not working properly and I wanted to see how others reacted. Maybe I will contact Thermopro, or just ask for an exchange. Thank you for the time in creating your test and responding as well.

@@BPRescue I checked mine again today and I was getting 2 second reads in boiling water... I am not as big a fan of that 620 but it does have a nice display on it.

The design is a 100% rip off of the Thermapen.

    • @ManCaveMeals

In that case, I guess EVERY other instant read thermometer in this category is a rip off of the Thermapen :)

for what it's worth, I have three thermapens. I have an original, an MK4, and a ONE. They are all great. They are just all expensive. Also, the thermapen original is the ONLY instant read thermometer where I have had a failure so far.

@@ManCaveMeals If it is a folding design - then yes, quite probably is a design copy. Internals may well be different of course. Maybe yours failed because you've had it the longest and used it the most? They do offer after sales service - send them an email - you never know.

I have the TP-19 based on a recommendation from @ManCaveMeals from a few years back. So far, I've been very pleased with its quality. Probably wouldn't hurt to add the TP19X to my "cooking tools" . Good review ! ThermoPro picked the right person to promote them. 🌡♨ 🧊
