Probably the greatest fx unit i have ever owned. This has that big sound quality. Currently it is retired and setup as a static sound fx unit directly going into my mixer in my modest studio....but after watching this video, thinking of re-racking it in a gator case and taking it back on stage....
I still have mine but it needs to be cleaned out. It got roached... bleargh! The foot controller was stolen I had the J12. I loved that you could assign 10 parameters to each expression pedal.
It sounds like it can still hold it's own even today, and as I always mention to people, you can run an analog overdrive/distortion into digital gear. I've been doing it for 20 years and it makes a major difference, even with this year's models sounding damn near identical to valves.

I use to own the GSP 2102 Jimi Hendrix Purple Haze Edition. Loved it, my band use to call it "God in a Box!" Would really LOVE to get a purple one again some time, I miss using it.
@@mthao1832 yes - some colours didn´t resist on the front plate. My gold Limited Edition looks like new, my 2 purple look al little bit worn. The cosmic blue looks real good. The chilly pepper have the problem that the colour did´nt left on the front panel properly. But all of them sound the same. My first one was the usual Studio Tube with PPc210- upgrade and it sounds the same too . It´s only a collector fetichism 🙂

Waaaaay overpriced. The black versions have issues when they're upgraded. Get any of the chrome colored editions. There's a golden plated one, chrome like in this video, and a purple one. The black versions have lower clocked crystals. When you upgrade the unit to dual disc and latest rom, you get pop noises. You'd need to upgrade the crystal oscillators as well. That means removing the motherboard, desoldering the crystals and installing the newer ones. Which I think are 20MHz series oscillator. There are some serious oversights to the menu that makes programming this thing a total nightmare. You also run out of ram and cpu space quickly if you're trying to get too creative with the algorithms. But if you're content with just tweaking the 80s-inspired pre-installed presets, you'd be alright and would rarely need to program it. The sysex implementation is total crap. Which means there aren't any software editors for it out there. I wouldn't even pay over $150 for the colored versions tbh. For $650 you could get an axe-fx I, or maybe II
@@GlenHyden To their credit, they did improve the UI with the sgs 2112 and vgs 2120. And there were PC editors that worked fine. They learned from their mistakes. I think samsung owns harman now. Crazy stuff eh?
@@GlenHyden I know the disappointment all too well. I should add I didn't like either the 2112 or 2120 despite their usability improvements over the 2101. They just didn't sound right. I owned more digitech products than I should've had. And on the whole, they've been mostly crap.
@@ladirectorguy there is a button on the back by the XLR outputs. And I would run.....guitar-2101-xlr out-fx return on the amp. It will make your amp a power amp basically. Or google 4 cable method and do it that way

Awesome! I am looking for an effects processor to match with my Mesa 2:90 power amp and cabs. Would you recommend going with one of older units or the newer equipment to get the best sound for distortion/overdrive? Thanks!
Go newer. If all rack... you could go synergy and pick your favorite module and add a rack effects unit. The 2101 has great effects. You could event use a Revv pedal before the 2101 as the preamp. Many possibilities.

I have read that the power amp and cabinets sims on the newer units would need to be turned off since I prefer to use the tube power amp and Mesa cabs. @@rontaylor9736 Yes. You would need to turn off the IRs or simms. I had the AX8. Still have the Helix. The Fractals are a bit closer to the real amps. But the fractals really nead software to be efficient at programming. By hand stinks on the AX8. Love the Helix easy on the fly use.
dude I just scored one of these.... is there a sys-ex processor for MAc for this thing? Years ago I had an interface that you could just dump presets from other people and they were awesome ( I probably used some of your old ones). I could never figure this thing out ahha.... From the comments below you still have that software? I can't find it anywhere. I have a PC too I could make it work
If you use the XLR outputs, you can switch on an analog cab sim that works surprisingly well in most situations. It's not as good as an IR, but might be good enough to get the job done.

For distortion and overdrives I'm using pedals . I guess I'm using the h&k mostly for its clean tone and di capabilities but would like a unit I could use for fx with out having to buy a bunch of expensive pedals with midi capabilities.
@Craig Bernard I can send a zip file. However I can't set it up. I had 2 units In case one trashed out during the upload. I could then restore the unit. These units are dangerous to sysex upload download to. I would hate to trash your unit with no way to restore.

I hear the "preamps aren't that good compared to today's" statement a lot.. can you name one better $ for $? what I thought, frankly most of today's sounds are um, generic? flat? and welp totally digital sounding in texture, dollar for dollar you won't find anything close to this unit, lots you can do with these, and today's digital is like what $3200 for something better, and for that $3200 you get a lot you wont ever touch, which means there is a lot you wont ever touch that can go wrong or defect.. truth is it wont ever get better than tubes for rock n roll... ever.. you have heard what they're producing with today's more "advanced" preamps right? ok then.. if one cannot make this unit work it wont be the electronics that are suffering..

@@ilmisxx2 well i got the 2101. I still haven’t hooked it up to the torpedo. Or an amp for that matter. Turns out I’m too busy for guitar all of the sudden . And manuals. I’ve played it through head phones and I can’t even get the pedal board programmed. Nothing like the units I remember. Gsp21 Gsp69 we’re so much easier than this digitech control one. Think I’m going to take a loss and sell it. I paid like 450 for the rack and the Board. 🤦♀️. I just can’t find my way around it and it’s just not the same as I’m used to. I like having a patch and leave it there like a pedal board. I don’t think This does that to well.

Digitech was bought by Harmond Music. They distroyed the product. Ax8 is around $800 and Helix Go or Native is close. I have a video for those units.

Do you have it hooked up via the XLR outs with the “speaker compensation”? If not you should. Makes a HUUUUGE difference in the tones!!
Using Impulse Responce in the DAW. The xlr speaker compensation is bad. Before IRs I used a Palmer speaker sim. Much better. But no match for IRs.

With the last version of the firmware and the dual PPC it does seemless changing.

This was plugged into a rack power amp. If you plugged into the MG it would need to go into the FX return.

If you know how to work the valve FX you can run the 2101 the same way. They sound the same except the tubes in the 2101.

Reverb.com has the 2101 from $250? To $500 US. Look for one with dual PPC210 option.
