Very interesting. Particularly liked the sound right near the end at 14:18. I've got a rack case now with a few spaces in it. This video is dangerous. Haha.
Rack effects are definitely better than any pedal board if you're after high quality effects in the studio (production context etc). I have yet to hear a pedal that sounds as good as my Lexicon PCM80 for reverbs, chorus and delays.
That is actually a big part of how I started! I bought a lot of 10 units from a studio that was closing... so worth it! Thanks for checking out the video!
Rack always was, is and will be better than pedals. There's just no comparison. I own a LOT of pedals, and I've had a few rackmount processors in the past. The best pedals on the market can only barely compete with the most mediocre racks. If you want that Tube Screamer sound, sure you need a pedal. Or a great booster pedal, or fuzz pedal. I still have an old 16-bit multi-tap delay rack that outperforms every delay pedal I've ever heard, with one exception - back then, there wasn't "shimmer" effects built within those old units. You could get that effect by combining racks or adding pedals, though.
Excellent video and another great addition to this series! Very informative. I really appreciate the detailed explanation as well as the individual (dialog free!) FX demos. Great job on explaining how one can use the different format of FX units in different situations as well as the capabilities of some of the units themselves.
Awesome video as a guitarist rack fx do sound better vut less reliable parts are sometimes hard. And now Eventide and TC are putting rack fx in pedals i have and Eventide micropitch delay and TC Electronic delay and Eventide tricerachorus so pedals are getting alot better now. Great video and sweet studio😎🤘
Your thinking of the SDD-2000, but you are spot on otherwise! It looks very similar to the 3000 and features sampling capabilities. They are very interesting units in their own right nd they still go for around $300 today.
Your studio is insane! What a nice collection of units.. If you have all the classic effects racks, I dread to think what rack samplers you might have in there? I spied a yamaha a4000 maybe?
that's funny, simply because I had no intention of putting that 's' in my comment. So, in reality, it is ME who needs a De-esser! Over the years, I've owned so many pieces of the gear I see in this video (been recording since I built my first studio in the late 70's) so it was cool to see some of that hardware once again........

Thank you for watching Alex, much appreciated! The PCM70 & TC2290 would be my top picks for your rack ;) Amazing combo!

Oh man. This is a rabbit hole.
Yup!!!! I thought the same!!😑😑
Oh, thanks for the mention! Good stuff, this is my next domain to conquer. Been hoping to find someone selling a huge lot on craigslist or something.

That korg rack unit was RZA's first sampler so he says, made his first beats on it.. somehow?
