I've been rebuilding a Polysix for the last several months and I think we're seeing light at the end of the tunnel. I can't wait to get it up and running! You've got a wonderful channel and definitely some glorious sounds here. Thanks for sharing!
Yeah, this one just strangely fell into my lap. It's a cool synth. But depending on what you have it might not add a whole lot, but then again, GAS has nothing to do with what makes sense.
I remember my old Poly6 so fondly. Not a load of control, top end, attack, etc., but it was one of my first poly synths which was programmable, so it earned a spot in my heart.........Nice to hear it here, again
Nice job! I bought one new in 1982. The band I was in was on the road, and we happened to meet a Korg sales rep by the hotel pool. He had one in his room, and invited us up for a live demo. I was sold! Paid $1295 USD at Rhythm City in Atlanta. And yes, we referred to it as the “poor man’s Prophet.” I loved it, and created a lot of custom sounds. Some were sound effects, like crickets and sleigh bells. (You had to be there. 🤓) I still have them stored on data cassettes. Alas, my Polysix died the dread battery leakage death in the mid-90s when I hadn’t used it in a long time. I’ve toyed with the idea of buying one on eBay and seeing if those sounds would still load.
That’s a shame! Do you still have it? You can replace the bad board. The Polysix hasn’t jumped up too high in price though! At least I don’t think it has. That’s awesome that back then it was known as a poor man’s prophet - that’s been said a lot on gearspace, so it now has some backed up truth, lol. Thing is, they’re cool in different ways. Gotta love crickets and sleigh bells though!
@@MIDERA Reply attempt #4. (Maybe the SoundCloud link to some of my early '80s Polysix explorations in my previous attempts caused them to vanish?) Anyhoo... I no longer have it. At the time it would’ve cost more than it was worth (to me, at least) to replace the motherboard. I was about to move to Nashville, and just wanted to get rid of extra stuff. I had to practically twist my repair tech’s arm to get him to take it off my hands!
@@MIDERA, hello. So, I don't have many people in my synthesizers, to my greatest regret, but, I think I have two safe values: I have an Jupiter 80 and an SV-1 88 notes. Most of my musical productions are made with the JP 80 but, I dusted off my SV-1 and I intend to use it a little more in my compositions. I also have an Rm1x (groovebox) and a QS 300 but,I used them a lot and don't react too well anymore... I also has a TR-8 (I hardly use it) and a TB-3 that I ordered new recently but which does not work properly and which is returned to after-sales service to my greatest regret: the "Step rec" function is only at its head, it does not work properly... Small world compared to your excellent set up. :)
Beautiful sounds as always! To comment on your caption, I think there's something special about a simple interface that gives you just enough options / controls. I haven't played either synth (yet) but it seems like the Polysix and P10 both kind of do that in their own way.
Thanks Treenote :) Yeah, I think you're right. There's something so inviting about just the most basic controls, as long as the sound is there (which it is, on the Polysix). They definitely do different things, but I need to think longer and harder about how to go about the P10. It's far more capable, but it does sound quite different, as the SSM filters sound different between the two synths. What's your favorite synth?
@@MIDERA No problem! That's a good question. I don't think I've found my favourite synth yet. I've owned a bunch with varying levels of satisfaction but I'm still looking for the one. Right now my main synths are my R3, EMX-1, and Digitakt (if that counts, lol). They're great instruments but I know there are better synthesizers out there. Both the Virus Ti2 and Matriarch really appeal to me (for totally different reasons). I'll hopefully try one or both those at some point. That being said, I'm happy and productive with what I have right now so I'm in no rush. Plus I don't have the space for more right now.
I had a JX8p for a short while and didn’t like it at all. You could sell the 6 to get the matrix 1000…. But then you can’t edit it at all. I’ve heard people say the 6 sounds better, but I love my M1000. Polysix is wildly different than both of them. If you don’t love your jx8p, might be worth the swap. Personally, I think I’d sell the JX and get a Juno 6 or 60. I think the Juno sounds better than the Polysix.
Came across extra funds to cop the PolySix. Gunna sell my jx8p and upgrade to the Juno 6/60 . That’s gunna be my game plan I’m keeping the matrix 6. I love it more than the jx8p
Thanks! Well - for what it’s worth, I sold my Polysix (kiwisix actually). I didn’t make any money on it despite buying it originally for $600. I put so much money into it, and even then the kiwisix has some quirks that just left me wanting to be rid of it. Once I go the Juno 6, the Polysix was really never used. It had a worse sound, worse feel… pretty much everything it did the Juno did better IMO. And for what that’s worth, I’ve even sold the Juno 6 to fund a Jupiter 6… and haven’t really missed it. I actually have enjoyed my System 8 as ugly as it is. It does the Juno 6 sound really really well. To the point that I think they’re indistinguishable.
Also, keep in mind the more stuff I have in the studio, the less good about it I feel. I did sell quite a bit to grab the Jupiter. Sold my Juno 6, my mirage, and planned to sell my JX3P but my friend ended up not buying it. I think I want to get rid of my D50 and AN1x too… but haven’t committed to it.
awesome demo, as always! have you ever tried the Poly-61? What are your thoughts? not as good as the polysix IMO, but still a pretty cool synth. The second oscillator is very interesting, it's actually not even a proper DCO, just a digital clock that is run through a 4-bit binary counter, whose outputs are attenuated and summed together to make a rough 'staircase' shaped saw wave.
I've never tried the Poly-61, but it does sound very nice. I like how it looks too. Pretty synth :) I think if I couldn't get a polysix, I'd love to grab a Poly 61, but find it hard to justify having right now. The second oscillator sounds cool too! Yeah, nice synth, just zero experience with it.
I have never really wanted a KingKorg. I played one in a store once but really didn't like the look or interface :/ Also - never really been a fan of the tubes in the Korg gear. Kind of lame additions on the EMX and ESX I think.
@@Tubeinnit Korg Wavestate is cheap? I've heard that it's sort of got a cheap build. Nothing from Korg has interested me in quite a long time. Their 61 key Opsix would have been cool. I loved the design of their prototype, but they didn't release that one.
@@MIDERA yeah it was £700 on release in Uk... is now £480 & has had a firmware update making it a 64 voice poly sampler too. It's lightweight & has unweighted keys, so i would think of it as a module & midi it up to your fav keybed. Yeah Korg Opsix (FM) & Modwave (wavetable) are same sort of build. Thought you would have more interest in the vektor wave sequencing though 👍 I just borrowed a Hydrasynth (wavetable) module, they are very nice build quality. ua-cam.com/video/sG48yCdqvmU/v-deo.html
@@MIDERA Yeah I have been looking for a nice Keyboard and I have seen a fair few for sale (KingKorg) and dallied with the idea of getting one as Keyboard /Synth but think I am going to get a Studio Logic SL mostly as Just a keyboard my Keystep has outgrown it's usefulness although I would never part with it.
This little collection of pieces is amazing: one instruments, the same patch more or less, many different ways to shine and travel away
Thanks! It’s a cool synth. I did list it for sale, but no one’s interested in it locally, maybe that’s a good thing…
