As a very not-good keyboard player who really appreciates so-called "Latin music" and wants to be able to play this style as much as I want to be able to play boogie-woogie and stride, this gives me a foundation to practice. Much practice is required because hand independence is probably my weakest area coming more from guitar and bass experience. Thanks for the kind and patient instruction!
I have been looking for a combination montuno and tumbao for piano all my life. This is the best arrangement i have ever seen. When i put on a bacing track, light up a cigar, and play along with it, my living room sounds like the buena vista social club......I have a tip for people trying to learn this. I play the first lower c note of the tumbao one 16th note before the right hand comes in on the firts beat. It seems to help me get the over all rhythm when i practice. Thank you my friend. You have brought joy into our house.
I'm a beginner and want to learn Salsa music! Thank you for making this tutorial clear and fun! You have a lot of patience. I will try this exercise soon. Thank you!
Very easy and helpfull! I cannot read notes but i killed this tune in an hour. Thanks a lot. Very fun to play and people also start to dance when you play this.
Hi...As you've put the notes for the '1251', progression above the keys, would it be possible to do the same for the base line, to make it easier to learn ?
dear piano freak. absolutely, absolutely amazing. I learn so much from you. keep going. you enrich my life, when you playing. please keep going! wonderful.
Hello Avishai, your videos are so great I want to jump to my piano and try what you do. But it is very hard for me to play both hands together. So please, what would you recommand ? Should I work each hand separately until I can play them with closed eyes and then combine them both, or should I play them together from the begining ? More simply said, how should we practice correctly ? Many thanks.
Thanks Paul.. 1. first I recommend you to play each hand separately. 2. Play both hands, but take only a small part( only 2 bars ) and try to combine them. I also recommend you to watch my video - " Latin Piano Exercises" There are some exercises that can help you ♥️ Avishai
IS there only certain chord progressions that sound good in montuno format? For example can you make an .......am/ dm /Gmaj/ C maj/ Fmaj /bdim /Emaj /am. I can play this progression in bossa nova stlye like in black orpheus or autumn leaves, but when i try to make this progression sound good in a salsa style, i have trouble. Do you have any arrangements, or tips on how to play more robust chord progressions in the montuno/tumbao form . Thanks again.
I am sure i can do this. I play by ear though i can read music and do not need heavy classic if you play sometimes for a function. I sonetimes play for tea at a hotel.
You have a beautiful voice and you are a great teacher, thank you for showing Latin piano to the world in such an easily digestible way! I'm definitely going to remember this forever and use it at every Latin jam I'm in ❤❤
Hello, Congratulations for your videos, I loves them... you are a dream teacher I have a stupid question. What is the chords for for this Montuno, I can't find them, somethin like Cm Dmb9 G7 Cm ? Thank you
Thanks. Montuno sounds like, in general, 4 bar phrase: |ONE and TWO AND three AND four AND |one AND two AND three AND four AND |ONE and TWO AND three AND four AND |one AND two AND THREE and FOUR and| ONE. Is that right? Sometimes it seems to vary a little. Much appreciated.
sheesh and I thought the bossa nova rhythm was hard... for salsa I'd always play in rhytrhm with the first three notes of the clave in 3/2 and I'd get away with it To get it 100% right I had to break rhythm between hands and just tap, then practice fingering in rhythm... And then that's it I guess, but the syncopated bass is what really made it a nightmare, probably because I'm accustomed to bass notes falling on the down beat from bossa/samba owo. And not to mention when starting the bass does start on the down beat of 1 and then shifts to the down beat of four.
I like this a lot but I can't decide on 2/2 for the son clave or thinking of it in 4. I can't seem to do it either way! But I want to understand the clave.

When you do the baseline, why do you change chord on the 4?
This is the Tumbao style,. We change the chord on the 4
Hi, is the introduction piano from a song or was it ad-lib by you? :> great work there!
This is a common move in Latin music. I may have changed a bit, but it is very useful
