Oh my... what a way to make me cry of happiness. This can't get any better. The colorful and vivid images Rossetti used in his poem are so beautifully painted by Bostridge and Drake. The video conveys such nostalgy - the longing Victorians- now displaced in the cities- felt for their former, simple country life. And that Vaughan Williams' chord progression at the very beginning is so moving, so effective... Thank you for sharing this. What a joy!
You all probably dont care but does anybody know a way to get back into an Instagram account? I was stupid lost my login password. I love any assistance you can offer me
The noon must not be silent! The noon must be filled with singing birds and praise to the God who created this miracle we call planet EARTH!!! We have not found another!!!
I clearly remember hearing a Bostridge recital in Toronto. I was in the first row stage center at Roy Thomson Hall. He had sung a few pieces and then began the four long beats of "Heilge Nacht" in Schubert's Nacht und Träume. I thought the sky had opened up. It was one of the most spiritual moments of my life. And his version of "Silent Noon" is very delicate here. It is a densely poetic statement of enduring love. And I remain convinced of that sentiment when he sings it.
My goodness, this is wonderful, I love the long pauses, nuances and hesitations they put in the song, real artistic license applied to the tempos, it's the way it should be tempo wise, I've always wanted it to be performed this way but it rarely is - so just beautiful, the lovely poem, a beautiful skilled voice, and Williams' gorgeous music, Bravo, Bravo..>!!
We're singing this piece in a vocal techniques class and were warned it was tricky but I'm transported by Ian's rendition, absolutely stunning, will have to buy the album now.
I sing this song. But Boistridge brings a new, supremely subtle quality to the interpretation (he and his accompanist of course). And what a beautiful voice. He may be my new favorite singer of art songs.
How can he not cut it for Schubert songs? O_o His recordings of Schwanengesang and Wintereisse are nothing short of amazing. I have recordings by various artists and have to say his are my favourites.
c'est vraiment magnifique.. cette poésie, la musique qui reflète bien cet apaisement mélangeant nature et amour. Tout ça orné d'une douce sensibilité grâce à une belle interprétation
Lovely strong but subtle voice and interpretation - love the video and your performance both vocally and visually. Helps to bring people in to the music and the concept without having to struggle (I'm operatically-trained and have had to try to find ways to help people who aren't into opera to understand and enjoy it). Very pleasant experience listening to, and watching, you in this. Kudos to the singer, the accompanist, and the filmmaker!
In one of his late recordings, John McCormack still manages the long phrase "deep in the sun-searched groves a dragon-fly hangs like a blue thread loosened from the sky" in a single breath.
He certainly pronounces it oddly - like 'ed-dg', a sound not normally used in English. (It's actually a letter in the Hungarian alphabet - gy - which is notoriously tricky to pronounce).
I didn't know Dante Gabriel Rossetti wrote in Middle English... why isn't the rest of the song in Middle English? hmm... At least Bostrigge rhymed hedge with it... Anthony Rolfe Johnson does a better job, anyway.
Honestly I thought it was a mistake, but I popped out to check the kingcup fields just up the road from where we live, and to my amazement, there was a silver egg not far from the nest in the middle.
Forrestnolan below asks what key this is in. The answer is F major. It is also available in E flat major, and was recorded in that key by John Shirley Quirk.
This lovely interpretation by Ian Bostridge of Silent Noon is as good as the John Shirley Quirke version on songs of travel.I don`t think I can praise Ian any more than this. I would think also that there have not been many Englist tenors as good as Ian Bostridge!!!. At least I hope he is English.
I love Bostridge doing english songs, and this CD is just perfect for him. But when it comes to other things, Schubert, and other songs he just doesnt cut it for me. My favourite recordings of a lot of art songs though, are Bostridge/
I had to smile at your comment, although I would have put it gentler:-) Still, I have to agree with you. It's, in my opinion, to soft and held back. I don't get any of the reckleess passion and fire that the images inspire. I have listened to other renditions fo this songs, and I must add, singers like Allen, Luen and family, do put more into it giving it more life.
@psychicbyinternet I agree! I hate when they try to make classical music "clever", and focus too much on looks, but videos such as these are really beautiful, and I think appeal to a wide audience! I hope to have a career in opera and classical music, and I will definitely be an advocate for this type of medium.
I've seen a few of these art song and aria music videos. Angela Gheorghiu has done a few. I like the idea. Maybe they should have a Classical Much Music that plays all these videos and interviews singers and 21st century composers. Someday...
Fine production,(altho i prefer my own imagination!),and sensitive version. Just a thought: imagine this song without: Harmony Tempo Rythm Texture Color Introduction Postlude.... Just a naked vocal line... That essential make-or-break participant, the PIANIST, should ALWAYS be credited!
Bostridge is more refined than Johnson its so much gentler and I can just imagine the lyrics ....do bases dislike tenors my friend Larry a base went on about bostridge skiinyness etc I just thought he was jealous because hes fat and bass lol
It’s a beautiful recording, but am I the only one who’s not a fan of the video? The poetry paints a picture that is very beautiful but also very simple...it’s the speaker and his lover lying in a green field, with a blue sky, clouds, a dragonfly, and some flowers. The videography here has too many leaves, bushes, camera angles, and distraction in general, and it detracts from the song.

There are billions of earth like planets in our galaxy alone.

I do believe this is the BEST vocal artistry/interpretation I've every heard for this song, EVER!
the you probably didn't hear Anthony Rolfe-Johnson.
@@singhsinga4592both are glorious.
I love the glissando in Rolfe Johnson’s ending of the piece though.
Such a gifted singer with a lovely focused, colourful, and free tone. In my opinion one of the world's best voices for this genre!
Expressive and absolutely angelic.
This is so so so beautiful. Ian's voice is perfection for this song. Either makes me cry or puts me to sleep happy :)
So tender and beautiful......
Bostridge's art & soul ... Thank God we're alive.
I am in awe of this mans voice.I am not familiar with this song however, I love him.
A beautiful rendition right to the heart.
this video has helped me memorize this song so much, i'm singing it for a final tomorrow and think I finally got it worked out
Hope your final goes well! Ignore the nasty comment.
How did you go on?
We're singing this piece in a vocal techniques class and were warned it was tricky but I'm transported by Ian's rendition, absolutely stunning, will have to buy the album now.
One of my favorites! and he does it beautifully!
omw. i think i've found a new lullaby. best song i've heard in ages. officially in love. :)
What a gorgeous sound - amazing!

I sang this my sophomore year for one of my solo contest pieces! Beautiful song!
i sang this song for my solo in my High School concert as well as for my college audition for the music program just in a higher key
I sang it too. Probs my favorite solo contest piece
If you like this piece, try some Roger Quilter songs. I studied some of them in my lessons. Particularly, “Weep You No More,” and “O Mistress Mine.”
How wonderful ! ❣️
Questo cantante è magico, semplicemente grande interprete
He is so beautiful and I love this song with his voice.
utterly delightful.....Ian, you should sing RVW more often
Hearing him perform the Songs of Travel would be sublime.
always a huge fan of him
absolutely gorgeous. i had to close my eyes.
so relaxing after a rough day.

aaaaaaaaah.

Lumineux. Cette version me laisse sans voix.

Gorgeous !!!
wonderful
fantastic
this is amazing =)))). Now i can follow along with a wonderful recording! Simply wonderful Ian!
I hadn't thought I'd ever find a version I liked better than Benjamin Luxon's, but this is it. Superb.
This entire album is so fantastic. I particularly love his interpretation of Delius' "Twilight Fancies". I wish that was on youtube. =(
In one of his late recordings, John McCormack still manages the long phrase "deep in the sun-searched groves a dragon-fly hangs like a blue thread loosened from the sky" in a single breath.
He sings "the dragonfly hangs like a blue thread loosened from the sky." on one breath! absolutely stunning
Wow 😳!
Great job!
Exquisite.
he is so handsome and a golden voice musta bin a boy chorister before
I love this one !
:)
stunnning mate....
Botridge singing Vaughan Williams is magical.
Consider the possibility that this song is a reflection on something that happened long ago. He is reminiscing.
Absolutely gorgeous! And who is the wonderful pianist?
Julius Drake 😊
Adorei
In 1:24, I hear him say "Are golden kingcup fields with silver EGG". It's supposed to be "edge". Did i just hear it wrong??
He certainly pronounces it oddly - like 'ed-dg', a sound not normally used in English. (It's actually a letter in the Hungarian alphabet - gy - which is notoriously tricky to pronounce).
One needs the avoid the hard 'd' in 'edge' - there are better ways around it!
It's the Middle English pronunciation of the word, 'Egge,' evolved to become
'Edge'.
I didn't know Dante Gabriel Rossetti wrote in Middle English... why isn't the rest of the song in Middle English? hmm...
At least Bostrigge rhymed hedge with it...
Anthony Rolfe Johnson does a better job, anyway.

Yeah!
Forrestnolan below asks what key this is in. The answer is F major.
It is also available in E flat major, and was recorded in that key by John Shirley Quirk.
I've accompanied it in D-flat and in G as well.
A good accompanist can transpose at sight into any key - well done!
와.... 진짜... 와...
@Yale75 I believe it was Julius Drake playing piano on The English Songbook. :-)
does anyone know what key signature this is in because i have to sing this and i think this key would work best
❤
I love Bostridge doing english songs, and this CD is just perfect for him. But when it comes to other things, Schubert, and other songs he just doesnt cut it for me. My favourite recordings of a lot of art songs though, are Bostridge/
i sang this for a high school state competition 😄😄😄
Queb Kaine I'm singing it this year for mine. Can you give me some notes on how to perform the piece.

hey! there are two performers here! is it Julius Drake? :)
I've seen a few of these art song and aria music videos. Angela Gheorghiu has done a few. I like the idea. Maybe they should have a Classical Much Music that plays all these videos and interviews singers and 21st century composers. Someday...
Ian Bostridge is Niles Crane as a tenor.

Doing this for my grade 7
No need to be nasty. Good luck for your exam!

@forrestnolan It's in F major. Thank goodness for perfect pitch. ;)

Like most Bostridge it's pleasant, but could use more balls.

Lovely voice....tempo too fast...
