    Oh my... what a way to make me cry of happiness. This can't get any better. The colorful and vivid images Rossetti used in his poem are so beautifully painted by Bostridge and Drake. The video conveys such nostalgy - the longing Victorians- now displaced in the cities- felt for their former, simple country life. And that Vaughan Williams' chord progression at the very beginning is so moving, so effective... Thank you for sharing this. What a joy!

    I clearly remember hearing a Bostridge recital in Toronto. I was in the first row stage center at Roy Thomson Hall. He had sung a few pieces and then began the four long beats of "Heilge Nacht" in Schubert's Nacht und Träume. I thought the sky had opened up. It was one of the most spiritual moments of my life.
    And his version of "Silent Noon" is very delicate here. It is a densely poetic statement of enduring love. And I remain convinced of that sentiment when he sings it.

    My goodness, this is wonderful, I love the long pauses, nuances and hesitations they put in the song, real artistic license applied to the tempos, it's the way it should be tempo wise, I've always wanted it to be performed this way but it rarely is - so just beautiful, the lovely poem, a beautiful skilled voice, and Williams' gorgeous music, Bravo, Bravo..>!!

Helps to bring people in to the music and the concept without having to struggle (I'm operatically-trained and have had to try to find ways to help people who aren't into opera to understand and enjoy it). Very pleasant experience listening to, and watching, you in this. Kudos to the singer, the accompanist, and the filmmaker!

    • @Londonfogey
      @Londonfogey 8 років тому +2

      He certainly pronounces it oddly - like 'ed-dg', a sound not normally used in English. (It's actually a letter in the Hungarian alphabet - gy - which is notoriously tricky to pronounce).

    • @saltburner2
      @saltburner2 8 років тому

      One needs the avoid the hard 'd' in 'edge' - there are better ways around it!

    • @kieranmcginn1265
      @kieranmcginn1265 7 років тому +2

      It's the Middle English pronunciation of the word, 'Egge,' evolved to become
      'Edge'.

    • @funnyguise
      @funnyguise 6 років тому +1

      I didn't know Dante Gabriel Rossetti wrote in Middle English... why isn't the rest of the song in Middle English? hmm...
      At least Bostrigge rhymed hedge with it...
      Anthony Rolfe Johnson does a better job, anyway.

    • @richard_perry
      @richard_perry 5 років тому

      Honestly I thought it was a mistake, but I popped out to check the kingcup fields just up the road from where we live, and to my amazement, there was a silver egg not far from the nest in the middle.

    This lovely interpretation by Ian Bostridge of Silent Noon is as good as the John Shirley Quirke version on songs of travel.I don`t think I can praise Ian any more than this. I would think also that there have not been many Englist tenors as good as Ian Bostridge!!!. At least I hope he is English.

    I had to smile at your comment, although I would have put it gentler:-) Still, I have to agree with you. It's, in my opinion, to soft and held back. I don't get any of the reckleess passion and fire that the images inspire. I have listened to other renditions fo this songs, and I must add, singers like Allen, Luen and family, do put more into it giving it more life.

I hate when they try to make classical music "clever", and focus too much on looks, but videos such as these are really beautiful, and I think appeal to a wide audience! I hope to have a career in opera and classical music, and I will definitely be an advocate for this type of medium.

    It’s a beautiful recording, but am I the only one who’s not a fan of the video? The poetry paints a picture that is very beautiful but also very simple...it’s the speaker and his lover lying in a green field, with a blue sky, clouds, a dragonfly, and some flowers. The videography here has too many leaves, bushes, camera angles, and distraction in general, and it detracts from the song.
