      You think? There ain’t been one slam long term signing yet. He wants eight years for guys who aren’t cornerstones. Like snell? You ain’t building a rotation around snell. He’s a compliment. He ain’t an anchor. A four year deal is good for an inconsistent player like that and that used to be the norm but boras kept pushing and teams kept given in until enough of them got burned.

  • @pathutchison7688

    There were already teams who just str8 up wouldn’t deal with you if you were represented by Boras. And now the situation is only escalating.

    I think another reason Boras has been unable to spin his usual magic for his players is the fact that one of his signature moves hasn't been working this year. That being, to make an end around the front office and go straight to the owner. Right now, the current owners that aren't skinflints in the John Fisher mold, have spent a sizeable amount of money on their front offices and analytics department. So, they are more inclined to listen to them than in previous years. Also, he burned the Padres pretty badly with the Eric Hosmer deal. In the past, teams were willing to deal with Boras, knowing they would probably lose out on the back half of the deal, but at least they would get premium production during the first two years. From day one, the Hosmer deal was a millstone around the neck of a team that should have been entering their contention window.

  • @gabeshivers
    @gabeshivers 10 місяців тому +15

    All these guys outside of Montgomery have pretty serious warning signs in their advanced metrics, so that’s part of the problem. (For example, Bellinger had pretty weak contact quality despite having a bounce back year)
    But it really comes down to players deciding up front what they want - do you want to shoot for absolute top dollar and risk whats happening to these guys? Report late to spring training or not at all, not know whether you need to move your family or get on board with the new team’s strategy etc?
    Or do you want to sign earlier to an organization that’s committed to building a successful team around a group, not just one or two guys? And be able to participate in a normal offseason ramp up, team facility, security of location, etc.
    So for players who want the second option, don’t use Boras. Because he’s going to try and hold out.

    For one Boras is a big reason teams are doing what they are doing. I really hope this is the end of long stupid contracts. The player's name is not worth more than what he can bring on the field at, say, 38 years old and playing like a little leaguer. I am thrilled that teams aren't falling for the Boras trick.

      I’m certain cases it is, like if they played their whole career there and they sale tickets but guys crossing over hell no. Whatever chance they give you to win over the next four years isn’t going to make up for the fact that they are going to hurt you over the last six.

    Snell is a trap. He REQUIRES an excellent defense behind him to function and most teams don't have that. Snell should have taken that deal with the Yankees because that was the most he will ever see as a player. The market has contracted slightly this offseason and Boras WAAAAY overplayed his hand.

    • @bmac4
      @bmac4 10 місяців тому +3

      The "NEEDS a good defense" is really not true though. His FIP the past few years has been very good, and the reason his WHIP was so high last year is he had a lot of walks, meaning he let guys on only to strand them a lot.
      The real issue is that he just doesnt pitch enough innings. He limits damage excellently of his own skill (even though having HSK and Tatis helps) but he averages 5.2 innings a start, partly because he throws plenty of Bs, meaning a team needs faith in their bullpen on any of his starts.

    • @Nobes2024
      @Nobes2024 10 місяців тому +4

      Snell lacked confidence until one day his coach said, why are you getting upset by walking batters? Are they scoring? No. Then stop worrying about it. He then molded walks into his game. He is no longer afraid to throw balls to get people out, especially since they aren't scoring anyways. He's worth25 mil a year, just not for 9 years

    Bad contracts hurt the product on the field and on tv. Giancarlo Stanton can’t run or stay on the field but he’s making $32 million a year and had a negative WAR last year (and is projected for 0.9 this year). It is an egregiously bad contract.
    These backloaded contracts are bad for business. One reason the NFL is so popular is because teams generally aren’t saddled with horrific long term contracts. The Redskins could release Carson Wentz with two years left on his contract. Imagine if his contract had been fully guaranteed and a team felt obligated to play him.
    Baseball owners have realized these huge backloaded contracts are bad for business. Boras needs to adjust his expectations.

    Boras is the most extreme end of something that is all around good for the game. Team execs used to collude to limit players options in free agency all the time to keep salaries down and pocket a bigger chunk of the revenue. Free agency of today is a much more fair bidding process because of agents pushing to get their guys a bigger share. Its part of the checks and balances of the league. Alas, Boras is the least likely to compromise and is typically the one who waits longest in the game of chicken. Eventually that just reaches a logical endpoint of team owners/GMs just saying screw it. There's give and take to it all.
    Let's be real here, the league doesnt have a salary cap. However much a team does or doesnt wanna spend isn't simply "cap space that could be spent elsewhere" like the other big 3 sports.

    • @pizzaparity
      @pizzaparity 10 місяців тому

      there’s no cap but teams do have budgets. a lot of teams set their budget way lower than they could and should, but nobody has infinite money.

    • @bmac4
      @bmac4 10 місяців тому +3

      @@pizzaparity This is true but like a lot of teams use this as an excuse to just run with extremely low payrolls and that's entirely on ownership and management, not agents pushing for their client. The A's profit quite a bit because they run a shoestring budget so even their incredibly low revenue which is their own fault to begin with still yields a significant net positive despite being an unserious team.

    Blake Snell wanted to come to the Mariners. He’s from Seattle and would love it. The Mariners (rather shockingly) are in such a good position with their pitching that they dealt away their expensive contract in former Cy Young winner Robbie Ray and basically said “nah, we good” to reigning Cy Young winner Blake Snell.
    Which is an astonishing position for a team to be in, but all their pitching is home grown young guys under team control for a while plus Luis Castillo who they traded for but have for a pretty decent price for several years to come!

    Good article and commentary. Never been a fan of Boros. Cody? Being a Dodger fan. Watch this kid come up. When he went free agent looking for big money, all of my Dodger buds knew he wasn't going to get it. Baseball is a difficult game difficult to play. Tough to be somebody's critic. But for whatever reason injuries or personal life the guy went into the tank for about 2 to 3 years. They expose his weaknesses at the plate. Baseball is a difficult game. Like you reported-- How do you know this guy is going to go to into the tank again. Baseball is it difficult sport. I'm not putting Cody down. But Otani was worth the big money. For 5 years he could hit lefties and righties across the plate. Equal average. He's the real deal. We do miss Cody's glove in the outfield. He covers a lot of ground & an excellent arm. Probably takes .50 off some pitchers' eras

    Boras usually gets shut down by the Dodgers' management, because tyhey don't like his tactics. He recently praised the Dodgers front office, which is really strange. It make me think that he could be trying to sell Snell to them, using sugar instead of vinegar. But I don't know that he's the type of pitcher they want. For the deal that Belli got, I would’ve been fine if the jays picked him up. It would’ve been an extra 16 mill on top of what we are paying kiermayer, who plays better defense and had a nice bat last year, so I see why the jays stuck with what we have, but Belli could’ve provided the lefty pop we lost with Belt.

Even with empty stadiums, they expect a middle class family to take out a loan to buy season tickets. Losing your young base baseball.

    Boras’ clients simply aren’t that great this year. Matt Chapman, great glove and inconsistent bat. Bellinger, nice glove and he bounced back last season after a few terrible years at the plate. He needs to have at least one more prove it season. Snell, a 2-time Cy Young winner, but he walks a lot of batters and doesn’t go deep into games. He’s a 5 inning pitcher. Montgomery won a career high 10 games last season and has 38 career wins. Was Boras expecting to get him $30 million per season? In years past Boras has bamboozled a few teams with similar type players. As 1/2 the teams usually don’t entertain him and many of the other teams have not gotten good returns on his clients, he’s simply running out of teams to bamboozle. If he was representing one of the games top players he could still get a huge contract, but so could any agent.
