What Color Is a Blue Whale?

  • Did you know there’s been a blue whale model at the American Museum of Natural History for over 100 years? The huge icon hanging in the Milstein Hall of Ocean Life has been a visitor favorite for decades. But over time, the way we see whales has changed dramatically as a once- hunted animal became a symbol of ocean conservation. Oceanographer and explorer Sylvia Earle tells the story of filming whales underwater, and Museum staff reveal how whale models have been refined through the years as we learned more about these mysterious ocean giants.

Well, I'm 70 years old and I remember as a child walking all around the first whale. I think the first one actually gave you a better idea of just how big it was since you could walk around it and get much closer. It was my second favorite exhibit, after the T-Rex who used to drag his tail on the ground. :) Thank you for this great video.

I don’t think I’m ever going to forget walking through that hall back when I was 11 back in 2012 or so and looking up and seeing that whale. I don’t think I understood the size until I realized how long it had taken to walk from one end to another. This and the preserved giant squid will always be important memories to me

It terrified me when I went (I was 8 and thought it was a real whale). It looked real and I stared directly at it terrified to move. Eventually, I was guided to the rest. The giant squid completely bewildered me and sparked my admiration for marine life.

I love Sylvia Earle’s closing statements here. They perfectly encapsulate why I so greatly enjoy and appreciate museums and zoos.
Her words at 12:38 specifically speak to me; on my 20th birthday, I stood in front of the Blue Whale model and declared that by the time my 30th birthday rolls around, I will have had the opportunity to have been in the water with one (hopefully as a documentary filmmaker).
If I am able to, I plan on returning to the museum on that day to visit the Whale again and say that I’ve done it. (And if this video is still online at that time, I will be sure to come back here as well to say the same!)

Something gray against its otherwise blonde, black or brown counterparts will definitely appear blue. As yellow is the complimentary color to blue/cyan, the absence of color will appear blue.

@Something Mildly Homophobic Yeah, simpletons. Cretoxyrhina should have better screen time, my man preyed on some aquatic and flying reptiles or even dinosaurs if possible. Yeah it was the same size of a modern day great whites but what did the meg do? Look cool and hunt whales? Well, creto literally killed mosasaurs.

I wish there was a program that allowed civilians to be trained on how to assist in environmental conservation. I think that would have a far larger effect than; recycle, turn off lights, don't use too much water, don't use too much paper, don't use too much plastic and when/if you do make sure to properly dispose of it... and all the rest.
I'm disabled so I'm not sure if I could help, but I want to try. It's just... where's the resources?
How do we go to the oceans and help clean and protect? How do we go to deforested areas and plant saplings? How? How much more needs to be done that just isn't being done either because people aren't aware or just don't know how to help?
Are there groups in major cities that go to polluted areas and clean trash and other things?
Is there a way to get large percentages of the world population to engage in environmental cleanup, community service, or other things that can help better our planet and all organisms that live upon it?
How many people WANT to help but just don't know how?
