As a former US Marine, I always liked that the lasgun depicts something very true about infantry life most civs dont ever learn about. You don't go to war with the best equipment there is, you usually go with what you have. My first combat deployment I went to afghanistan with a rifle manufactured, then re-manufactured already before I was even born, then remanufactured again twice before I eventually grew up and carried it to war. Its probably still in some poor private's hands, still going to war long after my service was complete. To tell the truth, the guardsman with a shoddy falling to pieces lasgun older than he is really isn't that far fetched or unrealistic. Hell, an army unit recently discovered a .50 cal machinegun thier unit was using was originally manufactured during WW1 over a century ago.

It doesn't really "run out" of ammunition. Is your battery pack depleted? Plug it into just about anything with electricity and you can charge it within minutes. No where near civilization? Put it out and let it charge via the solar rays of the sun. No sun to charge it? RR - The roar of Valkyries can be heard, dropping off Elysian Drop Troopers and their sentinels as they descend upon the battlefield on their grav-chutes, buying time for Rickert and his men.
An interesting choice. I, personally, would go with Sisters Repentia, but unlike some other choices i have seen proposed here, yours actually has a chance of getting to Rickard without being devastated along the way. Only point of contention would be that you effectively liusted two units instead of one: The Elysian Drop Troops and Sentinels.
RR - Shadowsword Nothing would be more fitting then having the fires of hell thrown back at the forces of chaos as the volcano cannon destroys the wall on which chaos’s fire support resides.
I can see your point, but getting a lone shadowsword without support all the way out there wouldn't make a lot of sense story-wise (immersion and all that). I personally would prefer my suggestion of Adepta Sororitas - specifically Sisters Repentia who go all the way out there into the jaws of the enemy in order to atone for their sins. Those not only would have better chances of making it there, but also have a believable reason to be there, because Rickard's target is a cathedral. While certainly cool, bringing any superheavy to bear in that situation, would require a significant supporting force to ensure it gets there - which in turn would be detrimental to the tension of the narrative.
@@glenglen6386 Sure. but firing into an urban environment would entail more risks than just ambushes. The surrounding buildings would severely limit the fields of fire, lest they want to bury Rickard's forces under tons and tons of debris from stray shells hitting the surrounding buildings. In addition to that, firing heavy artillery does reveal the position of said artillery -and Basilisks are not exactly ideal for shoot-'n-scoot. Therefore they might get off a few salvos at best - and if the unit had been overlooked so far, it must be fairly small - maybe two or three vehicles. So we are talking about maybe 20 or so shells at best. Sure, plenty of devatation, but not nearly enough to deal with an effectively endless torrent of demons - even if they all hit the intended targets. In this scenario the only two viable choices would probably be either infantry, or aerial assets. Orbitals are too inaccurate, and ground vehicles risk getting bogged down.
RR The Hammer of the Emperor will always fall with the power of Mankind behind it. Not just the Emperor's loyal servants, but his warmachines. Perhaps even the old yet highly effective Malcador Heavy Tank? Or even the versatile and numerous Chimera?
Agreed! I personally would go with Sisters Repentia specifically - seeking atonement in the jaws of the enemy - and reclaim the cathedral in the process. You may want to put a few empty lines between the RR and your proposal though, to make it easier to see.
“A simple squad of guardsmen is our most basic infantry formation. They’ll crumble in close combat, but they pack enough lasguns that it won’t matter” - Sergeant Major Merrick
RC Brother Baldermort, again you grace us with a fantastic tale and amazing narration. Your tales and oration are what get me through my long work days.
Good choice. Yet given the fact they are advancing on a CATHEDRAL I am thinking of another unit instead: Sisters Repentia. How better to find atonement than in an attempt to reclaim a cathedral from the Chaos filth?
The lasgun is HUGELY underrated in my humble opinion - firstly, there's the fact that it's actually substantially more powerful than the standard issue weapons of the current day military, even though the stories make them seem dramatically more pathetic. They're the ideal standard issue weapon - simple, durable, easily recharged and not too pricey. Secondly, the fact that they're not too pricey is HUGE - yes, with how overpowered everything in 40k is they'll need about 10,000 shots to take out a tough enemy. But, even assuming that if you send 10,000 men at a tough enemy they'll all only be able to fire a single shot before dying, the Imperial Guard can *afford* to make that trade . 10,000 soldiers are probably worth less to the Imperium overall than 10,000 lasguns, so a point and fire weapon that can be given to any pleb with reasonable expectation that they'll inflict some minor damage on an elite enemy is actually an incredibly effective approach. As far as "Never mind the death rate on that front line, half of them birthed their future replacements before deploying anyway" can be considered an "effective approach" anyway.
RR Most glorious of lore masters, I wish to see the Tanith first and only save the good commisar from impending doom. Ofcourse a little combination could be done, the imperial counter charge, but are severely outnumbered as the warp portal pulsate more and issues forth more daemons. They take heavy loses almost to a man and the commisar himself is gravely injured, then as one of the Blood-Letters comes in for the killing blow, it's head is popped off by a long range shot. It is then that the Tanith First and Only spring their ambush. Though I would love to hear this happen with you most glorious voice, I would not be diassapointed if the outcome was something else.
The Astra Militarum might give you cardboard armor, and send you to die hundreds of lightyears from your homeworld for a regime that sees you as cannon fodder, but they DID give you a lazer gun so...
@@rocci99 In all honest; it wouldn’t be a good bet, but thorically yes Lasguns are noted to have a similar damaging potential as an heavy stubber; and flak armor can stop a las beam usually. Both can tear up limbs With that said, a bullet acts differently and I’m sure .50 BMG would actually be better at piercing armour than a lasgun, so who knows
@@KalashVodka175 for good or bad, inconstency is something you found in 40k Lore. Fluff and cruch said that lasgun has the same fire power with autogun. More "accuracy" for a literally pinpoint weapon is likely more range; a longer barrel, fitted with more cooling capacity and lensing, likely helps maintain beam cohesion longer - letting you squeeeeze a few more meters of effective killing range out of it.
If you shoot 1 lasgun at a CSM, you die If you shoot 10, you pray that one of you hit the lense and vaporize his head; or you die If you shot 100, the CSM will have to pray not to die for once And if you shoot 1000; the CSM is barbecue meat

RR-Scout sentinels, armored sentinels, and normal sentinels I believe that a small or medium contingent of these versatile chicken walkers would be a spectical to see. Just imagine as the blood crushers are about to hit they are blown to bits by hunter-killer missiles and then jumping over Richards infantry and armor are heavy flamer/ close combat sentinels charge in.
RR The victories of the Imperial Guard are nothing if not team efforts. It's only fitting that Rikart gets help in the form of other members of the 'team' arriving to lend a hand. Another comment has suggested the Shadowsword, the often over looked sister of the iconic Baneblade. I feel that it would only be fitting to have a weapon crafted to kill titans resolve this titan of a problem.
Remember somebody doing the math on the lazgun, it's the ballistic equivalent of a smooth bore cannon on m1 Abrams MBT. But that sink in a shoulder operated weapon, is the equivalent of our top of the line main battle tanks. As for the story I think something along the lines of they all die valiantly closing the warp gate, goes along with the grim dark vibe.

I was thinking of these or kasrkins, not sure if they have been done yet
@@ranekeisenkralle8265 Elysians did have their unique sentinals.
I'm seconding this one.
RR - Shadowsword
Nothing would be more fitting then having the fires of hell thrown back at the forces of chaos as the volcano cannon destroys the wall on which chaos’s fire support resides.
Yes please!
RC
If the commissar doesn't order a charge and then proceds to lead the charge then I don't think he can call himself a commissar

RR
Adition of some specialist "out of nowhere", like sapers or maybe even a lost unit of basilisks could spice up the atmosphere.
RR
I concur, the guard does not advance without heavy artillery. To quote good ol Dawn of War "WHERE IS THAT ARTILLERY."
RR
I like this one
I like the idea, but Basilisks on their own would be too vulnerable to survive long while exposed.
@@ranekeisenkralle8265 Yeah but you cant see basilisks, they're firing from 15 kilometers away.
Oh yes the Lasgun, everyone mocks them until their arm is blown off and there’s one shoved in your face.
Thank you fellow guardsmen may you bring the wall of guns against the heretics.

Agreed! I personally would go with Sisters Repentia specifically - seeking atonement in the jaws of the enemy - and reclaim the cathedral in the process. You may want to put a few empty lines between the RR and your proposal though, to make it easier to see.

I feel that this could be a lovely opportunity for introducing Elysian Drop Troops 😁
Thank you as always for your amazing work, Lord Baldy!!!
Not to mention there is little to no recoil, and no bullet drop, it's LITERALLY rooty tooty point and shooty

Most glorious of lore masters, I wish to see the Tanith first and only save the good commisar from impending doom.

Unironically I’d rather have flak armor in a modern war than a ceramic plate; simply because I would probably survived even .50 bmg shots with that
@@KalashVodka175 so flakarmor can survive heavy stubber?
@@rocci99
In all honest; it wouldn’t be a good bet, but thorically yes
Lasguns are noted to have a similar damaging potential as an heavy stubber; and flak armor can stop a las beam usually.
Both can tear up limbs
With that said, a bullet acts differently and I’m sure .50 BMG would actually be better at piercing armour than a lasgun, so who knows
@@KalashVodka175 for good or bad, inconstency is something you found in 40k Lore. Fluff and cruch said that lasgun has the same fire power with autogun. If lasgun is as strong as heavystubber why some regiment bother using them?

@Matthew Beattie but the emperor is the omnissiah or at least a majority of the ancient mechanicum did when he first made planet fall on Mars and after heresy he was fully made omnissiah
@Matthew Beattie you mean the machine god the psychic influence that leaked out of the prison containing maglodroth is what gave humanity its boot up in the early planetary exodus but during the age of strife this influence would creep in once again creating the cult mechanicum the void dragon became the machine god the emperor the omnissiah and the machine spirit the men of stone (last one is apocryphal and is more or less conjecture).

Another scrumptious morsel from the world’s best lore chef.
The idea of a laser weapon requiring a longer barrel to "maintain accuracy" is hilarious and silly
Actually there is some truth to that. A longer "barrel" allows for more room for mirrors and lenses to focus the beam.
More "accuracy" for a literally pinpoint weapon is likely more range; a longer barrel, fitted with more cooling capacity and lensing, likely helps maintain beam cohesion longer - letting you squeeeeze a few more meters of effective killing range out of it.
The humble Guardsman. reminds me of The Battle of Rorke's Drift.

The victories of the Imperial Guard are nothing if not team efforts.
