LASGUNS - The Weapon of the Astra Militarum
Called the 'flashlight' by many, the Lasgun is one of the most universally seen weapon in the grim darkness of the far future.
The lasgun, what it is and what it does.
Continuation of the Story of Commissar Rikart and the Chaos invasion.

As a former US Marine, I always liked that the lasgun depicts something very true about infantry life most civs dont ever learn about. You don't go to war with the best equipment there is, you usually go with what you have. My first combat deployment I went to afghanistan with a rifle manufactured, then re-manufactured already before I was even born, then remanufactured again twice before I eventually grew up and carried it to war. Its probably still in some poor private's hands, still going to war long after my service was complete.
To tell the truth, the guardsman with a shoddy falling to pieces lasgun older than he is really isn't that far fetched or unrealistic. Hell, an army unit recently discovered a .50 cal machinegun thier unit was using was originally manufactured during WW1 over a century ago.

Y'all know how the Lasguns got added as the Guard's weapon?
Back when The God Emperor of Mankind was planning to invade Luna, he wanted to have a giant spectacle going on for psychological warfare. Loud music from the 2nd millennium, pyrotechnics, holographic dancing girls in chainmail bikinis and, of course, laser lights. Things didn't go as planned. Dragon Warriors accidentally setting off the pyros, lasers blinding folks, and holograms got mixed up with very nasty ones (maybe it was some Eldar Empire party vids?).
After all that, Malcador confronted Big E about that never happening again. No more psyop bs. The words "if you want light show so bad give the army some bloody flashlights." Emps realizing this could work so rearmed his army with lasguns.
And most people think the Emperor's secret project was the webway. That was just a minor side project. The real secret project was making some great lifelike hologram dancing girls in chainmail bikinis so every soldier, sailor and Space Marine could have one. If only he finished it. The galaxy would have been so awesome.

Here's something to consider: During the Great Crusade, the Imperial Army/Imperialis Auxilia primarily used just autoguns of some variant. Something that fired ammunition. Now, granted, the Imperial Army back then was named "Auxilia" for a reason. It was an auxiliary unit and didn't do the majority of the fighting, so logistically speaking they weren't the biggest drain. But, still, that many men were utilizing firearms - firearms that needed a huge supply line of ammunition otherwise they had nary but an expensive club. But the Lasgun? The only reason that the Imperial Guard can fight on as many worlds as they do, as far away from Terra as they do and hold out as long as they can is because of the Lasgun. It doesn't really "run out" of ammunition. Is your battery pack depleted? Plug it into just about anything with electricity and you can charge it within minutes. No where near civilization? Put it out and let it charge via the solar rays of the sun. No sun to charge it? Look to make sure the Commissar isn't looking and throw your battery pack into a fire and assure the Commissar/Tech Priest/CO that it isn't yours and you found it on the battlefield. Assuming you live. But... Chances are you might. Because what the Lasgun doesn't have in sheer firepower, it has in numbers. And logistical superiority. Just. Keep. Firing.

When you make the claim that the Imperial Army was just a auxiliary force I’d like you to reconsider
Cause, pure and simple, there is absolutely no way that slightly more than 2 millions space marines were able to conquer millions of worlds in the span of a century or two at longest. No way.
There were more expeditionary fleets without a single marine aboard than there were legion fleets.
What does this imply then? That most of the fighting was actually conducted by the dozens of trillions of the men of the solar auxilia and imperial army/armada.
The marines intervened and took part in the worst of battles that is true, and behaved more like proper armies than the chapters that followed them, but there is 0 way for them to have taken part in even a percent of all the battles necessary to establish the Imperium.

    • @matchesburn
      @matchesburn 2 роки тому +1

      @@KalashVodka175
They were auxiliary forces. They did not participate in combat as much as the Space Marines did. The reason why Space Marines could conquer as many worlds as they did is because most of them (except Lorgar) left the Imperial Army behind to secure and rebuild and reintegrate the world. This is what was causing so much friction with Lorgar and the rest. His forces stayed and made sure each world was dedicated to the belief of the God Emperor before they left - and they were way behind schedule of where they were supposed to be leaving others to take up the slack and eventually Big E himself verberally bitchslapping him in front of his own men for what he was doing was against the Emperor's wishes and was dragging down the campaign.

This makes 0 logistical sense, bro
The marines barely numbered 3 millions in the crusade, the crusade from my knowledge barely lasted one or two century at most post reconquest of terra
So you’re telling me 3 millions marines retook a minimum if 1 million worlds in 200 years? The math doesn’t add up.
There were several thousand expeditionary fleets, many of them did not include space marines, these were also securing worlds left and right

    • @matchesburn
      @matchesburn 2 роки тому +2

      @@KalashVodka175
Considering that most worlds were conquered in days or weeks? Yes. I don't see how you think it's not possible when we're talking upwards of two centuries. Also, the largest fleet and the one that saw the most action is the 1st Expeditionary Fleet, the Principia Imperialis. Of which, we don't know of any Imperial Army units that were included in the fleet - only Legio Custodes and Titans.
But, no, seriously, go look at the expeditionary fleets which were the ones doing the primary combat with worlds that opposed them. Almost all of them have either unknown compliments of crew besides Space Marines or they don't have Imperial Army.
In fact, the only expedition fleet that I COULD find having Imperial Army on it was the 140th Expeditionary Fleet... with a mere *_4,000 troops._* 4,000 troops is minuscule and inadequate for even invading another nation today, and you expect me to believe they could handle a planetary invasion? ...No.
The lore backs it up, the name suggests it, and the timeline is reasonable. The Imperial Army did not do most of the fighting during the Great Crusade.

I personally would prefer my suggestion of Adepta Sororitas - specifically Sisters Repentia who go all the way out there into the jaws of the enemy in order to atone for their sins. Those not only would have better chances of making it there, but also have a believable reason to be there, because Rickard's target is a cathedral.
While certainly cool, bringing any superheavy to bear in that situation, would require a significant supporting force to ensure it gets there - which in turn would be detrimental to the tension of the narrative.

The surrounding buildings would severely limit the fields of fire, lest they want to bury Rickard's forces under tons and tons of debris from stray shells hitting the surrounding buildings. In addition to that, firing heavy artillery does reveal the position of said artillery -and Basilisks are not exactly ideal for shoot-'n-scoot.
Therefore they might get off a few salvos at best - and if the unit had been overlooked so far, it must be fairly small - maybe two or three vehicles. So we are talking about maybe 20 or so shells at best. Sure, plenty of devatation, but not nearly enough to deal with an effectively endless torrent of demons - even if they all hit the intended targets.
In this scenario the only two viable choices would probably be either infantry, or aerial assets. Orbitals are too inaccurate, and ground vehicles risk getting bogged down.

The lasgun is HUGELY underrated in my humble opinion - firstly, there's the fact that it's actually substantially more powerful than the standard issue weapons of the current day military, even though the stories make them seem dramatically more pathetic. They're the ideal standard issue weapon - simple, durable, easily recharged and not too pricey.
Secondly, the fact that they're not too pricey is HUGE - yes, with how overpowered everything in 40k is they'll need about 10,000 shots to take out a tough enemy. But, even assuming that if you send 10,000 men at a tough enemy they'll all only be able to fire a single shot before dying, the Imperial Guard can *afford* to make that trade . 10,000 soldiers are probably worth less to the Imperium overall than 10,000 lasguns, so a point and fire weapon that can be given to any pleb with reasonable expectation that they'll inflict some minor damage on an elite enemy is actually an incredibly effective approach. As far as "Never mind the death rate on that front line, half of them birthed their future replacements before deploying anyway" can be considered an "effective approach" anyway.

Most glorious of lore masters, I wish to see the Tanith first and only save the good commisar from impending doom. Ofcourse a little combination could be done, the imperial counter charge, but are severely outnumbered as the warp portal pulsate more and issues forth more daemons. They take heavy loses almost to a man and the commisar himself is gravely injured, then as one of the Blood-Letters comes in for the killing blow, it's head is popped off by a long range shot. It is then that the Tanith First and Only spring their ambush.

With that said, a bullet acts differently and I’m sure .50 BMG would actually be better at piercing armour than a lasgun, so who knows

    • @CyberJellos

Actually there is some truth to that. A longer "barrel" allows for more room for mirrors and lenses to focus the beam.

More "accuracy" for a literally pinpoint weapon is likely more range; a longer barrel, fitted with more cooling capacity and lensing, likely helps maintain beam cohesion longer - letting you squeeeeze a few more meters of effective killing range out of it.
