- Peak Design Duffel 35L Review - 7 Things I Like and Dislike.
My person pick for the Best Travel Duffel, Travel Backpack, Travel Carry-on...you name it.
In this video, I review the bag's best and worst features.
"Peak Design’s ode to the timeless and utilitarian duffel bag, the Travel Duffle 35L is as beautiful as it is simple. Carry-on size with a 35L capacity, the Duffle is a perfect weekender, over-nighter, gym bag, or sidekick to one of our larger travel bags. Features removable padded top handles, a removable padded shoulder strap, weatherproof nylon canvas construction, and all-custom aluminum hardware. A burly #10 weatherproof zip gives high-visibility access to a single large volume, sized to work perfectly with our Packing Tools (sold separately). 2 internal and 4 external pockets provide added organization. Weatherproof nylon canvas shell with ultra-durable waterproof bottom liner."
One of the best reviews I have seen of PD duffle, subscribed just because of that, thank you!
Ok man, that vertical carry is GENIUS! I've never even thought about that! Thanks!
Yeah of course! It's the best carry style
@@EDG it seals the deal for me man. I'm gonna buy it. I'm just wondering if they're gonna do something about that weak magnets coz they fixed the sliding shoulder-carry on their sling 5l
@@aggaviriyo790 Glad my video could help! I've been thinking about your concern. Short answer is probably to buy the bag now. 1) this duffel flies under the radar/isnt marketed like their everyday or sling line. So i don't see an update coming anytime soon. 2) Peak's V2 line has been hit or miss in my opinion. In both the everyday pack and slings, it seems like they introduced as many new problems as they fixed old problems (ex. V2 backpack laptop sleeve is super small now, V2 sling front pocket is designed even worse somehow). I love Peak, but in this case the magnets issue is minor and don't seeing it being addressed anytime soon.
@@EDG yeah they kinda messed up their v2 line coz they tried to do something without thr feeback of the people through kickstarter
From my perspective, Peak was first like Samsung, listening and doing real creative things. But now they're becoming more and more like Apple, selling "design" above all else
@@aggaviriyo790 I like that analogy, been thinking the same thing. Peak makes beautiful bags. But I think consumers interchangeable that term with "designed well", so why would peak change if all the reviews say they design well. Functionallly though, I think they're some of the worst designed. Cumbersome to use, heavy, gimmicky features. Still love em for being unique, but that why I like this duffel so much. It doesn't feel "overdesigned"
This is an excellent review. Not because I agree with you (I do), but because of how you've really thought this out.
Thanks for the kind comment! Really appreciate it. I’ve hopefully continued to get better, as I’ve reviewed a ton of bags since I made this!
Like the review, have purchased duffel bag used it for travelling weekends as well take it to gym .
Regards Nizami
Thankyou for the comment, Nizami. Hope you enjoy, it is a great bag for the weekends. Check out my other bag reviews if you want more bags!
Great video! Now i just gotta decide between this one and the 65L...
Thanks! Quite the question. I’m actually working on a new video about this 35L. It won’t answer the question you have…but itll highlight a new collab color of this 35L and 65L 👍
The carry straps that double as backpack straps, while not nearly as comfortable as real backpack straps, are perfect IMHO. I only use them in emergency situations like when my hands are full with other luggage. This bag is my main carry on when not traveling with a full backpack of camera gear (the PD 45L travel backpack I also have and really like). Swapping packing and camera cubes between them are a huge reason I got both.
Totally agree. Huge fan of what’s PD did with the straps, because they don’t look like backpack straps at all. And yea using with packing cubes is great, I never actually bought those.
I’m considering the osprey arcane duffel or this bag as a companion piece to my osprey daylite 26+6. Now that you reviewed both what would you say?
I am trying minimize the wheels of my bags since I am going to Costa Rica and going between 4 different places.
@@strange_wilds I’d go Peak design for sure. Better built, weather resistant, more external pockets and padding. Plus, the appeal of the Arcane duffel is that it’s also a backpack….but that’s irrelevant if you’re a pairing it with your existing backpack. Hope that helps.
Tip for the handles is start with the rough side down and twist them together 180. So much better.
When I was younger, I have travelled with duffels. Later on I've switched to a suitcase with wheels, but never was too comfortable with it nor the backpacks for other than daily or touristic purposes. I am thinking of getting back to duffels, mainly because they are usually much lighter than (PD) travel backpacks.
This duffel looks realy nice, the only thing I dislike about its aesthetics is, that it is way too wide. It should not be imo
designed for the photography cubes in mind and should be taller instead. Looks weird when carrying over the shoulder and what I really hate is often suggested vertical carry-on, which ruins the overal aesthetics even more ...
Going to get it anyway, well, because that's what a PD addict does :-)
I agree that their travel backpacks are very heavy, and that’s why I also prefer duffels now. It is a bit wide, but a duffel will never be as flashy as a backpack so aesthetics while carrying wasn’t my priority. The bay still looks damn good 👍. I just enjoy the function of the bag. And yes, Peak makes it just too easy to buy their stuff haha!
good job. by the way, peak's video says that the stiffness in the opening is provided by an aluminum piece rather than a plastic piece as you mention. good work on your video.
THanks! And yea, that makese sense, i probably should have check the correct material.
Excellent job. I just purchased one.. Ty
Thanks so much! Excited for you to try it. If you're intetrested, I made a few other videos on Peak bags. check em out if you want to spend more money heh.
can you make video of how much you can put in this bug please,
and can you put 2 packing cube on top of each other like the 65l duffel?
I don't have the 65 l, but I will say that I'm able to stack two packing cubes pretty easily with this duffle. Thank you for the question
Good video Kyle, I just ordered this for my summer trips.
Hope you enjoy it!
I was thinking about getting one of these and I noticed this video came out two years ago and I’m wondering if they have a new version now or if it’s still the same one with the weak magnets. I would still get it though.
hi Christopher thanks for the question. To my knowledge they do not have a newer 35L bag. However, they did come out with a 65L size but I'm not sure if the magnets got any better.
Would this fit easily under the seat of an airplane? I have a big backpack that will need to go overhead as my carry-on, but was hoping to be able to fit this as well. What do you think?
Hi, yes it would fit if not packed super full. It’s a little long so it may stick out a bit, but it’ll fit under enough for a flight attendant not to say anything!
@@EDG awesome thank you. I think I’ll pick one up and hope for the best
@@nickcarneyphotography yea! It’s a soft shell and pretty collapsible. It’s not too tall so it’ll get vertical clearance below the seat. Just the length may be in question. Thanks
@@nickcarneyphotography nice, lemme know how it works for you.
I just watched your video first time. It's a nice review of this duffel. I like peak designed bags. How is the shoulder strap of this duffel? Is it comfortable enough to carry the bag?
The shoulder strap is very good. It's not the most passed strap out there, but it is useable. The good part is it can be oritented to what is most comfortable for you.
Hmm...thank you
@@interestingvlogs7185 yes, thank you. Check out my channel for some other gear reviews and travel videos!
Hows the bag 3 years later????
Still kickin! I gave the bag to a family member and they stil uae it. I’m honestly waiting for a V2 verison of this bag to pickup again for myself
My biggest issue is lack of laptop compartment. Other duffles of the same size fit a 13/14in laptop in. Not a deal breaking just a nice to have
I hear you. This is pretty old review, and actually sold this bag because of that reason. This is my favorite looking bag, but there’s others competitive bags with Far more function like a laptop sleeve and proper backpack straps. I just couldn’t justify keeping this over others. I’m hoping for a version two that improves on this.
Do you mind sharing what those other bags are?
I can’t see any better than the peak design at the moment.
@@JohnMiller-jz6us Sure, Im currently using the Knack Convertible Duffel. It expands from 26L to 40L, has laptop carry, luggage passthrough, etc. The Arcane duffel 30L is smaller but lighter and also has a laptop sleeve. And the Patagonia Mini MLC 30L is a bit smaller, but as a convertible it's extremely versatile and has the best laptop protection..but retails for $199. Those are the 3 I'm using now, and they're all great. The 1 condition is that the Peak Design is both the least expensive, and has the nicest looks by far! so you can choose whivcher. I made reviews for the 3 bags above if it helps.
The handle magnets work better if you have both ends of both straps attached to the hand carry lash points...yours are all higgledy piggledy to the magnets aren't lining up.
Yea that's a good point. I have mine setup as backpack straps but even still i wish the magnets were more effective. Nice use of "higgeldy piggeldy" by the way, love it.
To improved the bag even better , put a zipper FLAP on the top zipper, the flap should have SNAPPED on buttons that covers the zipper and the items are mire secured if the zipper comes open . The shoulder straps need to be adjustable!!!
Agreed, thats a good change. I'd buy that. I wish the shoulder straps were adjustable too.
The biggest goal is to learn from your special but useful way of carrying this bag
Thanks! Hope the video will help
@@EDG unfortunately, my bag ordered is 65L, not sure will it able to copy your way once it is fully packed
😂
@@pachomiussinanicus1728 haha yes, unfortunately not. Though let me know if you’re able to. I’m curious
I use adjustable straps from old equipments. Otherwise, you don't wear that bag on your shoulders, so tigh and uncomfortable il is.
Interesting, that’s hasn’t been my experience. It was comfortable for me
@@EDG coz it fits your body but since it ain't adjustable not everybody is comfortable
@@andrevaudrin3164 the strap can be adjusted
@@EDG by changing the ring spots on the bag, somehow (although it ain't enough) , but not the strap itself so far
@@andrevaudrin3164 Yes it is. I have the bag physically in my hand now. The shoulder strap length is adjustable just like any other strap. If you're talking about the hand straps, those aren't adjustable.
For the money, the bags WiFi sucks.
Yea, gotta check your internet provider
